Dear Parents and Carers

Device Management Workshop – Friday 21 June

This workshop, open to all parents, will continue on from the last topic of our workshop on ‘device management at home’. As parent feedback indicated it was of great help and I look forward to welcoming another good turnout of parents to this session. It will commence at 9:00am in the school Library and will be run by Mrs Martin and Ms Crane.

Faction Cross Country Carnival

This will be held next Tuesday 18 June and the long range forecast is for a nice sunny day which will be ideal after all of the recent rain. The event will commence at 1:30pm with the Year 3 boys followed by the Year 3 girls at 1:40pm. Races will be at ten minute intervals with the presentation commencing at 2:45 pm. An information package was sent out yesterday on connect. Parents and community are invited to attend and support all of our runners. With extended training leading up to our cross country we are looking forward to some strong performances and a great effort form all participants.

Kindergarten Registrations for 2019 We are currently taking registrations for our 2020 kindergarten program. Parents can contact the office and bring in their child’s birth certificate and immunisation record, and then complete the application for enrolment form. Registrations close on Friday 26 July which is the first week of next term. If you know of families this might interest, please let them know, especially if they do not already have children at Rostrata.

When enrolments are offered later in the year, parents will then be required to provide proof of residence within our catchment area.

Middle School Choir

This morning’s assembly performance was by the middle choir who performed two items; Swine song and Tamikini. As always they were incredible and handled complex singing in parts with great skill. Our assembly audience were captivated and appreciated this choral performance. Once again, thanks to our highly accomplished music teacher, Ms Darby.

CARE Focus for the Fortnight

The whole school has been conducting lessons this week that concentrate on using manners and appropriate language. “Excuse me, please, may I, and thank you” have been covered and we are looking at students using these manners in classrooms, in the playground and outside of school. When parents reinforce these messages at home, it assists with transferring these skills beyond the school. Your ongoing support for our CARE focuses is appreciated.

B Cluster Toilets

Finishing touches are being done to the tiling of the student toilets over the weekend and I anticipate that they will be operating as per normal next week.

Crossing Guard

Unfortunately, our crossing guard stationed on Rostrata Ave is unwell and the Police Department has been unable to find a relief guard for us. Until we have a guard back on duty, please be vigilant whilst crossing without a warden. Further please ensure that you use this crossing point when crossing Rostrata Avenue.

The Police Department is currently training new wardens and are hopeful that the position can be filled very soon.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

New TV and Edu Touch Boards

The introduction of iPads throughout the middle school has created many benefits apart from the priorities around improving teaching and learning. Previously unforeseen benefits now include a vast reduction in the amount of photocopying, a cost saving and environmental benefit, and teachers are finding they no longer need the interactive function on the smart boards a further replacement cost saving. We have investigated the use of large TV monitors, which we have seen in several other schools, and introduced these in two of the senior classes. In the junior classes however, we are still aiming to keep the interactive function and currently have two interactive Edu touch boards in use.

These screens are not affected by ambient light and are clearer and more visible for students. The feedback to date from staff and students has been very positive and if this continues to be the case, as older interactive boards need replacing, we will do so with the t.v. screens. These are extremely compatible with the use by staff and students with their iPads.

Good Standing Policy

Every public school has been required to develop a good standing policy for student behaviour, something Rostrata has now completed, been endorsed by the school Board, and is now operational. A copy of the document will be uploaded to the school’s website.

The good standing policy only comes into effect when a student has repeatedly transgressed the school’s behaviour expectations, or in one incident, they have seriously contravened the school’s behaviour expectations.

Loss of good standing can be for up to 25 days and will have different implications for students across the school. This might mean students do not attend school events such as carnivals, camps, excursions or other specially organised activities considered a privilege. For others, it might mean restricted play opportunities and loss or class responsibilities.

Page 4: Newsletter 9 Dear Parents and Carers · pg. 1 Newsletter 9 Dear Parents and Carers Device Management Workshop – Friday 21 June This workshop, open to all parents, will continue

pg. 4

There are a number of considerations that must be factored in to any decision regarding loss of good standing, and therefore each case will be investigated and it is likely that a different outcome reached depending on the circumstances. The Principal is responsible for the decision and parents will be notified of any loss of good standing.

Meeting to Discuss Proposed Traffic Management Plans

The Education Department recently engaged a traffic management company to advise on measures to improving traffic conditions around our school. These plans are now on display in the front office for parents to consider and vote for their preferred option.

Following the assembly on Thursday 20 June, I will also hold a meeting in the Library with parents to outline and discuss these proposals. As this will be the final opportunity to provide feedback to the Education Department on our preferred option, I am hopeful that a number of parents will be able to attend and provide input.

I urge all interested parents and community to take the opportunity to review the plans in our office and attend the meeting next week to provide comment before we return the community feedback to the Education Department.

Cold and Flu Season

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, this will be a bad year for colds and influenza. Already we have had a number of students with nasty colds …and subsequently, staff falling victim to these winter ailments. I urge parents to help by keeping children home to recover as when they sick, they not effective learners. This also helps prevent the spread of infection to others.

I appreciate your ongoing understanding and support.

Parliamo italiano!

Ciao Tutti! Many of my bravi studenti have been learning how to ask and tell the time in Italian. An important skill to know in any language! Che ora e`? you ask? Well it’s time for me to visit Bella Italia con la mia famiglia. Yes, my family is travelling to Italy and Croatia to show my children where their grandparents were born. We are so lucky to have Signora Datos, una propria italiana, teaching Italian while I’m away. Many of our clever Rostrata students speak a home language – something I passionately encourage. If you are one of these clever people, you could enter a competition being run by the Modern Language Teachers Association of WA and win some serious pocket money! Click on the link below to read up about it and discuss it with your parents. I would love to hear your story ideas upon my return in early Term 3. It would be fabulous to have some of our 40+ Rostrata home languages represented. https://mltawa.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/LITM-LET-ME-TELL-YOU-A-STORY-COMPETITION-INFORMATION-2019.pdf Buona fortuna!

PS Look out for a pic of me “fighting” a gladiator in the colosseum or on a gondola, singing O’ sole mio… in the next newsletter! Arrivederci,

Signora Rechichi

FOCUS ON RESPONSIBILITY

Recently I have been thinking about what responsibility might look like for children both at home and in the community, and also for adults. My Google search for children+home+responsibility yielded many websites that detailed how children benefit from doing chores at home. These authors also suggested strategies that parents could use to encourage their children to participate in routine household duties. In reality, we would all like our children to be good house mates- both now, when they live with us, and in the future, when they eventually move out of home. The raisingchildren.net.au website (https://raisingchildren.net.au/toddlers/family-life/chores/chores-for-children) cited 4 main benefits for children who do chores at home.

1. They gain skills for adult life such as cooking, cleaning, organising and gardening. 2. They gain experience with essential relationship skills such as communication, negotiation,

cooperation and teamwork. 3. They gain a sense of competence and responsibility, and satisfaction from completing tasks. 4. They gain a sense of belonging in their family and more leisure time with their parents.

This website suggested that children could be motivated to be involved in chores by working with parents initially, having a writtenroster, receiving an explanation of the benefits of having the jobs done, receiving praise when jobs are completed, and working towards small rewards. So, why should we, the parents, persist, when many times it is far easier just to do the job ourselves? Perhaps the answer lies in thereality that our children will be part of the adult world for far more years than they are children living with us. A world full of responsible adults, who consider the rights of others, will be a far better place to live than the opposite scenario.

It is easy for us all to agree that everyone has the right to safety, education, shelter, warmth, food, clothing, personal space, freedom of speech, be different, feel comfortable and equal opportunities (https://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=307&id=1712). To ensure that everyone has these rights, we all have a responsibility to live in a way that considers others.

So, that means we should: follow the rules (at home, at school and in the community), support those less fortunate than ourselves, take care of our own bodies as best as we can, consider the impact of our actions on others, look after our own belongings and respect the belongings of others. When we don’t act responsibly, then others may: be treated unfairly, put in danger, feel unsafe or unhappy, or choose to be irresponsible themselves.

Page 10: Newsletter 9 Dear Parents and Carers · pg. 1 Newsletter 9 Dear Parents and Carers Device Management Workshop – Friday 21 June This workshop, open to all parents, will continue

pg. 10

The discipline required to live responsibly and put the needs of others before our own selfish desires is not an innate quality. Instead, we, as parents, can help our children develop this habit by trying to live that way ourselves, and guiding them through experiences that allow them to develop their own habits.

BAND NEWS

The Junior Band Bash was held at Banksia Park Primary School on Monday 10th June. It was a fun afternoon with the bands providing some great entertainment. The three bands involved – Rostrata Primary, Banksia Park Primary and Winthrop Primary all performed two pieces on their own and then combined into a mass band and played four pieces. They produced a huge sound and it was a great experience for all the band students. The afternoon ended with a delicious afternoon tea. Congratulations to our junior band who, as always, played extremely well. Annette De Hoog Band Director

Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories retold by Kindy Possums

The children in Kindy Possums have enjoyed learning about Aboriginal dreamtime stories and culture this week retelling the very funny story “Tiddalick the Frog” with soft toys, which reminds us not to be greedy or take more than we need from the environment. The children also enjoyed using their fine motor skills to copy Aboriginal symbols with gems and pebbles. We also discussed the importance of Acknowledgement to Country and why they will hear it at school assemblies and gatherings.

ART NEWS

Year 3s and Year 5s have been looking at famous still life artists like Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. They have been exploring the visual art element of SPACE- foreground, middleground, background and composition. Students have been practising the drawing skills of layering; drawing what is in the foreground first and going up the page as things move away from you; scale; proportion and adding shadows and highlights.

The Year 3s this week created their own still life arrangement, took a picture with their ipads, edited them and will now use as a reference photo to create an amazing oil pastel still life artwork over the next couple of weeks. The students' skill and dedication make me so proud!

CLASS NEWS – B6

STEAM On Monday B6 and B7 constructed a tower challenge as their STEAM project. First we collected all our equipment which were 5 jumbo pop sticks, 5 cubes and 4 mini cups. We did it individually with some help from our table partner. Everyone built three different types of towers. The first was a tower using one cube as the base, the second was a tower with two cups as a base and the final was a tower with a perpendicular part that could hold two cups. Afterwards, a B6 partnership found a B7 partnership and made one big tower. For the big tower we needed 20 jumbo pop sticks, 20 cubes and 8 mini cups. Everyone took a photo and uploaded to their OneNote folder for reflection. It was so much fun! Molly and Karin Students

GARDEN NEWS

In the garden C8

Another day starts as the scintillating sun shines upon the C8 students who are in the garden. Group 1, the Wizard Lizards are conquering the winding weeds of Bed 3 and 4. Windson says they will be very busy as the teams continue to vanquish the weeds into buckets with a tug and a pull and a dust off. Group 2, the Banana Splits are the VIPs with the water monitors waving away the gushing of the hose and the flowing water into the watering cans. The quartermasters checking through the wave of people in desperate need of tools and us, the photojournalists weaving a thread of words. Group 3, the Cool Chickens are harvesting large spinach leaves, oranges, spring onions and lettuce from Bed 3, 10 and 16 as they help to prepare ingredients for the kitchen where there is the sound of sizzling and a delicious aroma. Group 4, the Garden Cooks are seed raising into the soil as the purple snow peas will be showing signs of growth soon. Group 5, the Crazy Chickens are mounding the blossoming potatoes of Bed 23 as they work furiously with their trusty hand troughs. And there you have it, a satisfying day in the garden with a spark of growth blooming all year round! Students C8 It has been wet weather this week where the Year 4 classes have been studying the Noongar seasons and reflecting on their own seasonal cycle. Thank you for all the wonderful chicken volunteers who care for our chickens over the weekend. Volunteers are needed for upcoming school holidays and weekends.

Woolworths Earn and Learn – Finishes 25th June

Thank you to everyone who has been adding stickers to our collection boxes! The promotional period is nearly finished (ends 25th June) so we have a couple of weeks left to get as many more stickers as we can. Please ensure that your stickers are counted – ideally in a sealed envelope with the number written on the front. This makes it a lot easier for our volunteers, as counting tens of thousands of stickers takes a lot of time! Please note, there is no need to stick them onto the collection sheets, simply counting and placing them in a labelled envelope is perfect. If you have any questions about the program this year, please contact P&C member Rosemarie De Bari at [email protected] who is coordinating this year’s program.
