Year 2 Home Learning Dear Parents/ Carers, We hope you and your families are all well. Thank you for logging onto Teams twice a day and supporting your children with their learning activities at home. We are very proud of all the children for both their positivity and the fantastic work and effort they are putting in, in these difficult times. Thank you to those of you who have been able to send photos of the children’s work to [email protected]. It is lovely to be able to praise the children individually for their hard work and occasionally suggest some targets/next steps to keep them progressing. We have been very impressed this week with the children’s enthusiasm in researching penguins this week and their wonderful recital of the Poem of the Week. They seem to have enjoyed the practical maths lessons too, exploring the halves and quarters of different shapes and quantities. Great maths skills children, well done! Please find attached the Year 2 home learning activities for the week commencing Monday 1 st February 2021. Each day has three lessons. This week is another Science week and we are learning about animal classification and polar bears, including how they have adapted to survive in their habitat. There are lots of interesting facts to read and videos to watch to help us learn more about these magnificent creatures. Some of the research will involve using different websites, so please remind your child of e-safety. They should have an adult present when they are using the internet. Maths this week is all about shape. PE – Mr Watson was really pleased to receive some photos and videos of the children taking part in the fitness challenges and yoga lessons, so thank you to everyone who has shared these with us and the PE Team. The PE teachers have prepared more exciting PE lessons and challenges for the children this week. Remember they can do PE on any – or every day! It’s good to keep active! Each day, your child’s class teacher will continue to host a meeting on Microsoft Teams at 9:15am to explain the home learning for the day. Your child’s class teacher will also host a daily second live lesson at 12:35 pm. If you have any difficulty accessing these meetings, please email the school office. The teachers are also available via email, to support your child in their home learning. Please contact them at the Year 2 email address [email protected]. Please also use this email address, if you have any questions relating to the home learning. We hope you have a good weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday on Teams. PSHE – Learning at home. In our class afternoon Teams meeting today – we are going to do a circle time type activity – where we can all share our thoughts and feelings about learning at home. Use the questions below to help you think about and describe how you feel about home learning. What do you like about working at home? What is the best thing about working from home? What don’t you like about working from home? What do you miss from school? What is the first lesson you would like to do, if you could choose, when we go back to school?

This will be a time for reading together, playing number and word games, sharing children’s work, class discussions or active games.

Polar Bear Facts for Kids DK Find Out: https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/animals-and-nature/bears/polar-bear/

Friday Polar Bears – key questions. Following on from your research yesterday, try and answer the key questions below, which also link back to our earlier science lessons. You can present your work as labelled pictures or as full sentences. 1) Is a polar bear an animal or bird?

How do you know? What features does it have or not have?

2) Can you draw or write down a food chain for the polar bear? Remember, food chains show who eats what.

3) In which habitat (natural home) do we find polar bears? A woodland, pond, savannah or a polar sea ice habitat?

4) How have polar bears adapted to

living in the cold harsh climate of The Arctic? What parts of their body help them? What do they do to help themselves survive?

Today you can choose to do one of these lessons on repeating patterns, depending on how confident you feel with this topic. Choice 1: Recognising and creating repeating patterns. Is it a shape pattern or a colour pattern? https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-recognise-and-create-repeating-patterns-6rtpac Choice 2: Recognising and describing repeating patterns. Look out for the different shapes, their colour, size and orientation (which way up they are). Become a detective to work out what is missing in the pattern. https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-recognise-and-describe-repeating-patterns-6hjk4c?activity=video&step=1

Free Time Friday/ Art The Year 2 teachers are so impressed with how you are all coping with learning at home and how you are continuing to try your best. Well done Year 2! Choose a fun activity to do this afternoon. Since we haven’t done as much art as usual this week – you may like to do a polar bear arts and craft activity this afternoon. Scroll down to the end of this overview document for some ideas if you are interested Have fun!
