Meet Local Writer On Monday, 8 May, local writer Janette Hankinson

attended the English Extension 2 class from 3:15 to 5pm

and discussed her experiences of writing several novels

in the past few years, using the pen name Jaye Ford.

Janette explained her creative process when drafting and

editing her own novels, then workshopped ideas for the

students to finish their HSC Major Works, which are due

in August. The students were very interested and

appreciative of the advice Janette offered, especially

how to overcome the dreaded “writer’s block”!

On behalf of the students, and class teachers Mrs Zina

Zajac and Mrs Carole Houston, we would like to thank

Janette for generously giving her valuable time and

offering her skills and advice to the students.

The thrill of the theatre, there’s nothing quite like

it; from goose bumps to laughs, from exhilaration

to tears, you can experience it all.

On the weekend of May 12th-14th, Mr Campbell

and his cast of Yr 12 Drama students performed

the annual school production, which this year was

Moliere’s ‘The Miser.’ Fortunately there weren’t

too many tears at the show (apart from the

distraught protagonist of course) rather applause,

and the odd chuckle as a bonus.

Theatre incorporates its audience like no other art

form can and the Playhouse patrons were totally

engrossed by this production. I even think

someone walked out with an extra 20c in their

back pocket.

Supported by a groovy band that made many

glorious Seinfeld references, and hosted at the

Civic Playhouse, the performance was a real

testament to the crew’s hard work, enthusiasm,

zeal and diligence. I take my hat off to a great

performance and advise everyone to keep their

eyes out for what’s in store next year.

HARMONIES

This year, DioSounds has a focus on “Broadway

Melodies and Hollywood Harmonies”. To be held at the

nostalgic Civic Theatre, our 2017 production will

showcase the talents of over 500 student performers

from across all 11 secondary schools in our Diocese.

Memorable musical moments will be revisited when

each school performs on Thursday, 8 May. Each school

has selected repertoire that captures the essence of live

stage performance. From Dolly Parton to Tim Minchen,

from Dirty Dancing to La La Land and music realised

by dance, “DioSounds – Broadway Melodies and

Hollywood Harmonies” is set to entertain us all!

Tickets will be available for

purchase through the official

Ticketek website

Our St Francis Xavier’s College students will be

performing the following pieces:

White Cockatoo Spirit Dance

The Climb

Reapers

and

A Head Full of Dreams

Students will have their technical rehearsal on

Wednesday, 7 June at the Civic Theatre. They will

then perform two separate performances on Thursday, 8

June, a matinee performance for primary schools only

and an evening performance (open to public) at 6:30pm.

A permission note, with a detailed itinerary, will be sent

home next week.

Note: for the evening performance, all students must

be collected by their parents/ guardians immediately

after the performance from the Civic Theatre.

It would be wonderful if all family and friends could

attend the evening performance to witness the talents of

our students here at the College.

We will look forward to seeing you all there.

Maitland. All students played incredibly well and

represented the College with great pride.

Our Girls’ A Division Team played extremely well and

was undefeated in all of their games, smashing their

Grand Final opponents 7-0.

Our Year 12 Boys’ Team unfortunately went down in

their Grand Final having previously been undefeated in

their pool.

Our Year 11/12 Boys’ Team and Division B Girls’

Team played extremely well, with many players new to

the Sport. All teams played admirably showing great

sportsmanship.

Girls’ Division B Team

On Thursday, 27 April, a squad of 30 boys’ coached by Mr Paul Dan, competed at the Rugby Union

Hawthorne Shield Tournament at Hunter Valley Grammar, Maitland. The boys’ made the Finals, however,

went down in the dying minutes of the game to Merewether High School. Most Valuable Player (MVP) of

the day was Connor Mulhearn.

The following week, our Rugby students backed up competing in Newcastle’s local Rugby

7’s Tournament. Approximately 60 students, consisting of three boys’ teams and a girls’

team competed at Merewether High School on Thursday, 4 May and played for the local

bragging rights against Newcastle High School, Merewether High School, Callaghan

College and Hunter River High School.

All of our students competed incredibly well and made it through to respective semi-finals.

Our girls’ team were the Female Champions of the day bringing home the inaugural ‘Dish’,

finishing off undefeated and proving to be fierce and tough competitors. Two of our boys’

teams unfortunately went down in the finals with fatigue setting in. This left our final boys’

team, dubbed the ‘Immortals’ by self-appointed Captain Coach Year 12 student Kelly

Byrne, to finish 3rd overall bringing home the Bowl. However, possibly the best match of the

day was when two of our boys’ teams played each other for the ultimate schoolyard

bragging rights. A very intense and entertaining game to watch.

MVP’s of the day:

Boys’ A Team- Jai Robbins and Hamish McKee

Boys’ B Team- Jack Smith

Boys’ C Team- Kelly Byrne

Girls’ Team- Nicole Nathan

A big thank you goes out to our staff who coached and managed the teams on the day, Mr Paul Dan, Mr

Matt Priest, Mrs Amanda Corrigan and Mrs Louise Fanning.

Our Girls’ team have continued their undefeated streak!

The team, captained by Year 12 Student Jess Wilson, and coached by

Mr Paul Dan, competed last Friday, 12 May in the Qualifying Round of

the NSW State Cup at Marcellin Fields, Lorn.

The girls’ showed great skill and teamwork scoring some impressive

breakaway tries. They are now preparing and looking forward to

competing at the NSW State Cup in Week 10 this term.

Thank you to Mr Paul Dan for training and coaching the team.

NORTHERN

Finn Carlin and Jordan Mackellar, two of our Year 11 students, travelled to Smithtown as part of

the Diocesan Open Boys’ Rugby League Team to play and trial for the Northern Rugby League Team.

The boys’ were an integral part of the Diocesan Team that defeated Lismore Diocese.

Finn Carlin’s tremendous effort was rewarded with selection into the Northern NSW Rugby League

Team. Finn will now progress through the Rugby League pathway representing Northern Country

NSW at the NSWCCC State Championships on 18-19 May.

D i o c e s a n

On Tuesday, 16 May, eight of our students competed at the Diocesan

Tennis Tournament in Broadmeadow.

All students competed incredibly well and progressed through several

rounds of Tennis. In our boys’ team, all players made it through to the

Semi-Finals with Keith Moody and Michael Kelly playing each other

in the Final.

Our girls’ team achieved similar results, with several girls’ making it

through to the Finals and Imogen Mahony progressing through the

Grand Slam.

Unfortunately, the very talented Laura Slatter succumbed to injury and

was unable to play her Finals round.

All of our students have progressed through to the NSWCCC Tennis

Championships on Monday, 5 June in Bathurst. We wish them all the

best at CCC and would like to thank Ms Geraldine Hook for stepping

into the role of Tennis Coach and Manager.

On Thursday, 4 May, eleven SFX students attended the Diocesan Cross Country at Glenbawn Dam. It was

an early start but well worth the effort. All SFX students showed a healthy competitive spirit on the day and

conducted themselves in an exemplary manner. It was a pleasure to travel with such a good humoured and

well-mannered group.

A notable mention should go to Rose Davies who won the Girls’ 18 Years event by a streak! Grace Hood,

Lily Hewitt, Hannah Downes and Lucie Fityus successfully won a spot in the NSW CCC event for the

Girls’ 17 Years. Alex Clinton ran into 2nd place with Harrison Johnson and Isaac Clifford not far behind

in the Boys’ 17 Years event. Keith Moody and Michael Kelly also made it through to NSW CCC for the

Boys 18 Years event.

Well done to all those involved and good luck at NSWCCC to be held at Eastern Creek on Friday, 2 June.

Thank you to our accompanying staff, Ms Olivia Gollan, Team Manager and Mr Justin Welbourne and

intern Ms Samantha Friend for assisting on the day.
