Information for Students and their Parents

Some Questions and Answers

1 What should I be aiming for? Good school reports in both Years 9 and 10 - to enhance your job prospects

and/or to prove to yourself and your parents that you are capable of tackling the HSC.

Sound grades in all the courses you complete in Stage 5. These grades will be available for you to view on a Transcript of Study accessed on the net and on your Record of School Achievement when you finally leave school (ROSA).

2 What must I do? You must satisfactorily complete the following courses: English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE (History & Geography) and at least one 200 hour elective. You must have had adequate experience in Design and Technology, Art, Music, LOTE and PE at some time in Years 7-10. Sport (including carnivals) is also compulsory in Years 7-10. Your attendance must be satisfactory. This means that: you must attend school on at least 85% of all available school days; you must have a pattern of attendance which shows that you are making a

genuine effort. Your overall application to your studies must be satisfactory. This means that your attendance, effort and attitude must be up to scratch in all your subjects!

3 How does the grading system work? In all courses, you will be given a grade (A – E) by the school. In Mathematics you will be given either an A10, A9, B8, B7, C6, C5, D4, D3, E2. All these grades will be based on Course Performance Descriptors, which your teachers will provide you with a copy.

If you do not satisfactorily complete a course, you will receive an N grade.

4 How do I “satisfactorily complete” a course? You must attend lessons in that course for the required number of hours. If you do not bring the correct equipment (including safety equipment) to a lesson such as PD/H/PE, Industrial Technology - Metal, Industrial Technology - Wood, Agriculture, Science, or Food Technology, then you will be marked absent from the lesson. You must make a real effort in all class activities.

You must make a serious attempt at all your assessment tasks.

You must have achieved some or all of the course outcomes.

If you fail to meet one or more of the above requirements you will be given an N determination.

5 What must I do if I miss an assessment task or fail to submit the task by the due date? If you are absent for an assessment task because of illness or exceptional circumstances:

you must submit a completed misadventure form signed by your parents/caregivers (with relevant documentation eg medical certificate) to the head teacher of that subject as soon as possible.

Complete the task by the new date specified by the teacher.

6 What penalty provisions exist for late or non-submission of tasks or unexplained absence when a task is set?

a) Late Submission

A due date will be determined for each task. Any task submitted after the 8.55am deadline will be awarded ZERO MARKS for assessment purposes, except where an illness or misadventure appeal is upheld. Students should hand in uncompleted tasks on the due date rather than be late. Teachers will provide feedback on the quality of the task.

Year 10 Assessment 2016

5 | P a g e

b) Cheating If there is a clear evidence of cheating in any set assessable work, the students involved will be awarded ZERO MARKS for that submission.

c) Non-serious Attempt Any student who presents work for assessment which, in the opinion of the teacher and the head teacher, constitutes a non-serious attempt at the exercise set, shall be awarded ZERO MARKS.

d) Plagiarism Any student who plagiarises will receive ZERO MARKS. This includes:

Downloading information from the internet and presenting this as your own work

Taking information from a published text and presenting it as your own work.

Copying another student’s work

7 ‘N’ Awards If you get an ‘N’ determination in a subject it will appear on your Transcript of Achievement as ‘N’ (Unjustified). You must satisfactorily complete English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE and PD/H/PE.

8 What about school reports: are they still important? Yes!!! If you are looking for a job in the next few years, your school reports and the comments on them will be absolutely critical! Employers simply do not want “dead wood”, rather, they want people who are prepared to work hard. You will need to make sure that your marks, grades, comments and attendance show that you are a good worker. If you are intending to go on to do your Preliminary and HSC courses, good reports will show you, your teachers and your parents that you are a serious candidate for senior school.

9 Can I leave school after Year 10? The school leaving age is now 17 years. Students can no longer leave school at the end of Year 10 unless they have turned 17. The only exception to this rule is if they have full-time employment, or are undertaking a full-time TAFE course.

10 Who do I see for more information? Mr Noonan (Principal), Mr Johnston (Deputy Principal) and Mrs Roberts (Year 10 Student Adviser) will answer any questions you may have. Darren Noonan Principal
