It · is these fellows that are the weak umpires. Usually unfit, uninter.ested and with a complete lack of correct interpretation of the laws and kDowledge of ·the game. Each iS ever ready with an excuse as to why they do not at tend training or lectures . A strong disciplined body of

Our worthy President, Clive Hills, went overseas during mid season. Our thanks must go to him for steering us on a balanced course .and tor . his diJl.l6macy: in handl ing.certain situa:tions, particularly at the eve of the season when goal and boundary umpires' fees presented a particularly sticky problem.

_ We . .,continue to officiate at most country centres, and would no doubt officiate 'at -far dis.:tarit ··centres if sui table tra.nsport was available, We experienced some trouble .. 11ith umpires fail-, in& .. tc notify Associations of their intention to travel to their appointment in their own vehicle. 'ThiS is a must and courtesy alone demands that this be done. Co-operation aild ·friendliness •ith COf:Ul~ry Associations will facilitate the passage of increase in fees when it occurs t'rom time to time-.

No umpires have been recommended for approval for Life Membership at the Annual General Meeting.

FINANCE:

We finished the financial year with $117,18 in the bank, which is sufficient to commence ~-se.Bson and pay for various commitments that arise. Our Annual Ball was not such a financial burden -~'s has been the case in previous years. Added expense this year will be payment to a

. : This was prepared in finality during the season and was presented to the meutbers ~lY .. in 1Q69 and uas duly adopted. This puts our Association on a much ~ir~r basis thim' previously :and becomes the cornerstone of our function.

~A;INJ.NG SUPERVISER:

The W.A.N.f.L. saw fit to provide us with a Training Superviser. We were most fortunate in .having the services of Hal Symons, who by his enthus iasm and knowledge of our physical requirements , gal vanised us into a much fitter bunch than we had been during prior seasons~· ::. We trust

.. ~~t ~al will be with us in this capacity for many years to come. - '· ·'

·His innovation of the Training Camp at Point Peron early this year is a must for future pre_se.os.on qoaini.ng.

FEES:

The League, prior to the commencement of last season, increased payments to Field umplres .. who officiated at League games, but little or no pro rata increase was made to other categories and, in consequence, much dissatisfaction occurred; particularly amongst Goal and Boundary um-p;j,res • . . . 'The inaugural Ball held prior to the finals was a huge success, soeidly 8nd' ffuB:ric'ially. We 'enjoyed cricket and tennis again, against Swans and East Fremantle respectively. The ··Christmas Tree was, as usual, a pleasant day, especially for the kids. ~nder-catering occtirre~ at "the fiist couple of after-training dinners, caused by the uncertainty of the iiWnber who atteride·d. A we.li attended Christmas Barbecue was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. K. Cox.

._. ,' , ·~: Financially we have had another successful year. This is not reflec~d in the· excess of ~~ceipt: over Payments, which shows a credit of only S6.51, but shows up in our Jio~e Socials

_and_!/.J.IIplres' Teas figures, which gives a debit c•f $236.00, our National Fitness Weoliend Camp' '-'SJ.6l.:.QO, our Christmas Tree $61.00 and our Inaugural Bell $4\) .00.

-·--This year we endeavoured to give something . to the umpires; we had a pre-season social at Garry M:comish:s and a free Christmas Social at Kevin Cox's, together with the Christmas ~~---a~d Nahonal F~tness Weekend, climaxing an enjoyable and successful season.

My thanks to Ted Brunton, our Honorary Auditor, who does so much behind the scenes by giv·-ing his expert advice on finance and accounting procedures to the Umpires' Association.

Gentlemen,

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

During the 1968 season, panel members umpired 465 Junior games, including Under 14, Under 16 and Public School· matches, : on Satin-day mornings.

To all umpires ~ho controlled these games during the season, many thanks, and we look forward to your continued support: in the coming season.

To the new members selected on the 1969 Panal (Field, Goals and Botmdary), may I offer congratulations and all the best for the season.

SOCIAL:

During the 1968. season~ our Sooial Evenings and Umpires' Teas, with the exception of the Inaugural Ball ae · Boans, !.:lor ley,-were very poorly attended.

I would like to sincl!rely thank past Presidents, Basil Rigg, Clive · Hil!S; Secretary, Garry McCamish, President John Dolling, Treasurer, Ned Martino, and Vice · Pres~dent Bob Smith, and all Committee members, for their help and support during my term as Assistant Secretary.
