DearCustomer,

With the completion of the 2nd of three expansion phases at the Interxion ZUR1 data centre in Glatt- brugg we have put an additional 640 m2 of state-of-the-art data centre space into service. In doing so we are setting new standards not only within our Group, but also in Switzerland’s data centre land-scape, maintaining our pole position thanks to colo-cation.

Optimum temperature control, the backup power supply and the access security system make our data centre the ideal facility for hosting your serv-ers. Redundant, generously dimensioned back-bone lines guarantee the promised bandwidth at all times. And a broad spectrum of connectivity options gives you access to over 30 carriers and ISPs. Turn to page 6 for more details.

Our Customer Case feature showcases two very interesting customers, uplink AG and WAGNER AG, both of which operate in the Interxion market place. uplink develops everything in-house, from ready-to-use standardised offers to complex data centre solutions, ICT architectures and managed services. With the clear-cut objective of designing a solution that boosts their customer’s flexibility as well as their security. WAGNER AG is the IT partner for SMEs. Its strengths lie in acting as general contrac-tor for services relating to the consultancy, plan-ning, construction and operation of IT infrastructure projects.

This time round the team member focus is on Steve Callaert, who took up the position of Account Man-ager in May.

On 26 August 2010 we held our VIP event in ideal late summer conditions. Join us as we look back at the event. See page 8 for photos of the occasion.

“For us the high security standards and

the professional data centre support

services were decisive in opting for

Interxion (Schweiz) AG”

Mainframes belong to the past. Today desktops in offices are all about main-frame virtualisation. As workplaces become increasingly mobile and loca-tion-independent, the highest security standards are an absolute necessity. What’s more, the level of complexity is increasing all the time. This places great demand on users, demands they themselves are not always able to ful-fill. That is where uplink, the special-ist for information and communication solutions, comes into its own. Indeed, this is uplink’s strong suit. As uplink CEO Patrick Roth remarks, “Our aim is to ease the burden on the user and provide the level of service he effective-ly needs. That’s why we always come back to the original idea behind IT: IT is meant to lighten the burden in our eve-ryday work, not make it more complex. It is the only way to help the user. Which is why we came up with ‘nFlex’, our vir-tual workplace.”

5The complete office environment in a nutshell thanks to the Interxion market place

After a development time of only two years, uplink presents the virtual workplace. A workplace whose data is stored on a central server and is re-trieved via a chip card or web browser, worldwide and with a follow-me func-tion, to the last automatically stored data status. ‘nFlex’ is proving very popular and is already up and running at many companies and various SMEs, for which it is ideally suited.

“However, it is thanks to the co-oper-ation with Interxion (Switzerland) AG that we are able to offer our services and satisfy the trend for office cloud computing. For us Interxion (Switzer-land) AG is the best possible data cen-tre facility provider. Thanks to Interxion we are able to run IT services with a very high level of reliability and in turn offer our customers top quality and a high standard of security. This goes for all areas of physical security (from access control to fire protection and power supply). All the bank outsourc-ing regulations (2008/7) imposed by FINMA, Switzerland’s financial mar-ket supervisory authority, are also complied with. In other words we can guarantee our customers the highest security.”

“Thanks to its co-operation with

Interxion (Switzerland) AG, uplink had made

office cloud computing and all its benefits

a reality”

Pole position thanks to colocation

Several studies have shown that the rapidly ris-ing flood of data and the constantly increasing demand for storage space are among the biggest challenges of recent years. But more and more, the high demands in terms of data reliability and availability are playing a crucial role. That is why it is important for companies to be able to con-nect with their customers, reliably and in a vari-ety of ways. This entails not just a free choice of network service providers, but also a high-density power supply and access to digital market places, to mention but a few key requirements. By out-sourcing their IT infrastructure and business-critical data to a data centre, companies are able to maximise their business potential and stimu-late their own growth. Data centre operators such as Interxion (Switzerland) AG are of invaluable as-sistance as their special all-inclusive packages accommodate individual customer requirements.

With ac-cess to more than 350 carriers and ISPs Interxion offers absolute neutrality, and with 28 data centres in 11 countries it covers a dense pan-European network, which can be of importance for interna-tional companies. Besides 18 Internet Exchanges (e.g. in Switzerland the neutral data exchange platform SwissIX) Interxion also hosts a range of communities or hubs throughout Europe. They provide customers with access to new and diverse business opportunities.

guaranteed access to media communityGiven the complexity of the digital me-dia landscape, which is itself subject to constant change, Content Hubs are also increasingly attractive. Demand for real-time content is growing, along with the pressure to distribute that content. Content owners, publishers and distributors need a colocation provider they can trust, someone with a sound expertise of both technology and market. They need a partner who can support them reliably with the use of real-time and live content services with guaranteed availability, maximum

security and tried-and-tested publish-ing methods for their valuable digital content. He also offers easy access to a broad spectrum of opportunities for content distribution. “For WAGNER AG, Interxion (Switzerland) AG is the only provider who

can meet the excep-tional requirements in terms of power supply

and air conditioning”

As a study by IDC and Interxion has shown, the trend is very much towards outsourcing. According to the study the sustained demand for outsourced data centre services is set to rise by an an-nual 23% in the next four years in the European core markets of Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and France. This is the equivalent of a growth in these countries of CHF 725 m. In Switzerland IT service provider WAGNER AG, which specialises in planning, building and operating IT infrastructure for (S)MEs, is also playing the outsourcing card. As CEO Thomas Wagner explains: “Cloud Computing, SaaS and Infrastructure-as-a-Service are already key items on our agenda and their importance is set to increase considerably in the future. With Interxion (Switzerland) AG’s infra-structure and our own data centre in Kirchberg (BE) we have set up the ideal conditions to steadily further develop our outsourcing business and, together with partners, satisfy our customers’ highest requirements”.

Regarding the decision to opt for Inter- xion Thomas Wagner adds: “We selected Interxion (Switzerland) AG because as a partner Interxion is able to guaran-tee us maximum availability, secu-rity and autonomy. That means we can concentrate on our core competence, i.e. operating IT infrastructure for our customers, and building on basic infra-structure of the highest standard. We are very taken by Interxion’s efficient spatial concepts with regard to power supply and air conditioning; they com-ply with the highest green IT standards. Standards which more and more of our customers demand and appreciate. Thanks to the multiple redundancy of infrastructure and connection and the top quality standards, we are able to satisfy the highest security and availa-bility requirements,” Wagner concludes.

The partnership, now already in its eighth year, has evolved in the most positive way for both companies. WAGNER AG now ranks among the most prestigious customers of Interx-ion (Switzerland) AG. Both companies have enjoyed steady growth, success and continual efficiency gains. As a re-sult they have now become close part-ners of many year’s standing.

Rising energy costs on the one and, more cost-effective IT budgets on the other. A challenge with which data centre operators are faced also in 2010. According to the latest Gartner research, companies have to expect a rise in energy prices of up to 10% this year. And yet, for most companies methods for ascertaining energy ef-ficiency are still of secondary impor-tance, and many IT managers simply do not know how much energy their data centres consume.

Christian Stolte, Systems Engineer with APC by Schneider Electric, has to say on the subject: “While energy-efficient technologies are now readily available, they are still not sufficiently taken into account. Against the backdrop of rising energy prices it is essential for most companies to keep a check on energy costs by using the appropriate tools and procedures. The availability of analysis functions and indicative data on current and historical power consumption, as well as the expenditure for individual subsystems is a precondition for ena-bling companies to spot opportunities to optimise their energy efficiency and control their costs. It’s a step which is certainly worthwhile, especially given the rise in energy costs.”

On this basis measures can be adopted to lower energy consumption. APC by Schneider Electric has drawn up the fol-lowing four-point plan for companies:

1. optimise by sizing correctlyPoor energy efficiency in data centres is often due to oversizing and obsolete UPS technology. To counter inefficient oversizing, decision-makers need to respond quickly to growing UPS pow-er requirements and opt for modern technologies that require less energy. What’s more, not every UPS is suitable for every area. That is why APC provides UPS systems for all requirements: from home users to server rooms, small data centres to production facilities and large data centres.

2. identify power consumption trendsOnce the information on the data cen-tre’s power consumption is available, informed decisions can be made on the ideal dimensioning of an IT environ-ment, thereby lowering the overall run-ning costs. APC’s Infra-Struxure Cen-tral management software for example is used to ascertain unused capacities. Data centre operators also obtain data on the age and status of their systems, as well as historical data on the energy consumption and costs.

3. determine physical values at rack levelLocal and remote monitoring of physi-cal values such as temperature and air humidity should be made directly at the relevant location, i.e. the data cen-tre cabinets. A centralised monitoring software can then be used to determine and control the power supply, air condi-tioning and security in real time at aisle and rack level, right across the system.

APC by Schneider Electric

Page 13: YDMP Vol. 4 - English

13

4. cool correctlyAccording to Gartner, in 2011 rack and aisle cooling systems will be the most widespread strategy for IT infrastruc-ture with high power density. However, the right cooling system begins with the conceptual design for the infra-structure. Reducing the spacing be-tween cooling source and heat load helps minimise the mix of air, which in turn prevents hotspots and increases availability. The temperature at rack and aisle level can also be monitored with sensors, providing the user with real-time on the precise heat distri-bution on the premises. APC’s InRow cooling systems are specially geared to the requirements of virtualised IT environments.

On average a typical company site will experience around 15 power outages a year. UPS systems provide an emer-gency power supply for a limited amount of time and help to prevent data loss. The UPS runtime should be at least as long as the systems it pro-tects need to shut down correctly or until an additional emergency power unit kicks in. If data is still being pro-cessed during the outage, documents or system structures may be damaged.

Single or multiple workstations can be efficiently protected using offline mod-els. Line-interactive UPS systems are the systems in most widespread use. This is down to their high reliability and the fact that they can be mounted in 19” racks. Double-conversion UPS sys-tems from 1 kVA upwards or in larger

installations from 10 kVA upwards can be used cost-effectively and ensure out- standing output voltage quality. Finally, UPS systems with delta conversion come into their own in larger installa-tions. This technology’s high efficiency levels results in considerable savings in energy and overall operating costs.

It is only with the right technology that the required level of availability can be achieved at economically justifiable costs. Long-term viability is also a key aspect. Many companies are familiar with the scenario where capacity and availability requirements increase much faster than expected. Opting for the right UPS and infrastructure solution offers the ability to respond flexibly to new requirements.
