Term 1, Week 11, 13th April, 2018
UPCOMING
EVENTS
St. Francis College have been knocked from their perch by Yanco Agricultural
High School in the 2018 Dave Sheldrick Shield game.
The final round was the decider after the two sides were locked at one game apiece
after both defeated Leeton High School in earlier matches.
The game between St Francis College, who were defending their title of the last two
years, was always going to be a fierce and competitive one.
Both schools were out of the blocks early, but in the end it was Yanco Agricultural
High School who took home the shield with a 20-8 win.
It was the first time in six years that Yanco Ag has taken home the shield and the
team was more than excited with their win.
Well done YANCO…..

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Beach Carnival and Gala Day were again a great success and congratulations to the new P&C group
organising Gala Day for a great event. The new additions to the day seem to have been well
appreciated, especially some of the activities for younger kids. Congratulations and thanks also to
the Johnson family who have run the shearing competition for many years and this year had over 70
entrants for the competition. A fantastic event with students, parents and younger siblings involved
in the activity.
Beach carnival was again a fantastic showcase for the school with the students all getting involved
in the events. The marching seemed to be even better this year with many old boys commenting on
it at the Old Yanconian’s dinner on the Friday night. Congratulations to all the House Captains for
calling the extra marching practice to get it right. The marching on the day was won by McCaughey
as was the carnival itself but the march past in particular was a very close event with only a couple
of points separating first from fourth. The work by the P&C supplying coffee and food was well
received by all.
Recently I have sent all parents/carers a reminder about some school levies that need to be paid
directly to the school. These levies were Technology, Transport, Activities and Sport. These levies
are vital if the school is to run these programs. I appeal to all parents to pay these levies by the
beginning of next term so the school can continue to run these programs for all students.
After a long period the school is finally installing new lockers for all 7- 10 students so that phones
and laptops can be charged overnight. The lockers are located in the corridors for greater security
and are opened and closed in the morning and evening by duty staff. This allows all students to get
a good night sleep free from electronic media as well as reducing students’ texting each other at all
hours.
The upgrade to the school’s fire systems continues and the next block to be done will be Mason.
Students are expected to move back into Hindmarsh and out of Mason early next term. The work in
the Mason block is not as extensive and should be completed by about week 8 with all students
moving back in by the end of term.
The school has a new permanent Music teacher, Ms Richardson, and we welcome her to the school
and look forward to her involvement over the rest of this year and into the future. Next term we also
have the new Head Teacher Girls Welfare starting, Mrs Arnall, as well as a new Deputy for the
remainder of this year, Mr Maher. The school is currently holding interviews for a Head Teacher
Teaching and Learning and it is hoped that they will be starting as of day 1 next term as well. Mr
Laing applied for the position of Principal at Barellan Central School and was successful and the
school will run an ad for this permanent position in Term 4 this year.
I hope everyone enjoys their break and comes back safe and ready to get into study next term.
Gary Hunt
Principal.

PIGS AT SYDNEY ROYAL
The 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show saw the Pig Team head on their inaugural trip to compete in
the Schools Commercial Pig Competition at Sydney Olympic Park. To be involved in the
competition students had to source suitable pigs, prepare a PowerPoint presentation showcasing the
Australian pig industry, feed and prepare the pigs for show, and undertake an audit by Australian
Pork Limited.
Students travelled to Ardlethan to Strathbogie Bacon Farm on the 27th of February to meet Phil and
Linda Grinter who owned the pigs where our Year 11 Certificate III in Ag class picked up the bacon
for education purposes to prepare livestock for the Sydney Royal Easter Show. On the return trip
from picking up our pigs we encountered the problem of a flat tyre on the 13 seater bus. This
enhanced our skills at cooperating together and working as part of a team to be competent in
changing a tyre. As the pigs grew and become older, students began to work alongside the pigs to

School for the 2018 Competition. Congratulations
to the students on this great result.
create a bond and calm them down so they would be more placid and have better temperaments for
the Sydney Royal Easter Show. This process involved the students washing the pigs, parading them
in a simulated judging ring and showcasing them to the public at the YAHS Gala Day.
The Pig Team travelled up to Sydney on the
22nd March to prepare the hogs for
competition. Our pigs travelled well, and
once settled we checked out the competition.
While we were at the Sydney Show we were
introduced to Mandy and Dawn Fleming,
who have a Saddle Back Pig Stud. The
following night Mandy and Dawn asked the
pig team, Darcy Barr, Jacob Oxley, Oliver
Stubberfield and Hamish Jenkins to help oil
their 29 pigs ready for the competition the
next day. This proved to be a good learning
curve and we thoroughly enjoyed being able
to help out fellow competitors.
We had to create a PowerPoint presentation which was to be handed in as part of the competition,
showcasing the Australian pig industry and more specifically the nutrition and growth aspects that
were applied to our pigs as we readied them for Sydney. In the PowerPoint section our school
placed 4th out of fifteen other schools, and this was the lowest placing we received out of all the
events we were entered in. On pigs show day we
were highly successful, with our pigs being
exhibited to place equal second individual pig
(equal with ourselves) and winning champion
individual pig live. This then meant that our
three pigs were judged the Champion Pen of
three pigs out of the thirty nine pigs entered.
Whilst at Sydney Royal, the Pig Team also
manned the APL Pig Stall, which was an
interactive stand where members of the general
public could experience pig handling and
ascertain more information about pig habits. Darcy
Barr had the pleasure of dressing in a Pig Onesie
and taking random questions from the crowd his
knowledge and understanding was put to the test.
The boys performed extremely well when
interacting with the public and giving them the
opportunity to handle pigs.
As a cooperative group of kids we would like to
thank Mr McVittie for transporting us to Sydney to
show the pigs as well as Mr Collins who had put all
the time and effort into making our experience the
best one possible and leading our pigs to victory. In
addition the Pig Team should be congratulated for
the way they performed and represented the school
in Sydney. Well done YAHS Pig Team!

CONGRATULATIONS JOCK YELLAND
Jock received three awards at the Leeton and District Association Cricket Awards Night recently.
Whilst playing for Phantoms ‘A’ Grade team for the season, on weekends from the school, Jock
was awarded the following:
LDCA - Warren Smith Cup ‘Cricketer of the Year’ Award 2017/2018
LDCA - Warren Smith Batting Award 2017/2018
LDCA – ‘A’ Grade Most Improved Award 2017/2018
Well done Jock, a great achievement for this young man.
CONGRATULATIONS BRAD DAUNT
Brad Daunt recently competed in the Australian Stock Horse
(ASH) junior judging competition at Sydney Royal. Along with
twenty other competitors, who also qualified by winning
competitions at branch level, they made their pilgrimage to Sydney
to vie for the top honours.
The association bring out four horses and the competitors under the
age of 21, try to place the horses in the same order as the judge. If
the competitor has arranged the horses in the correct order, the next
step is for that competitor to speak one on one with the judge and
tell her the reasons for their decisions. From that speech the top
junior judges are awarded. Brad was lucky enough to be sashed
NSW Champion Junior Judge for 2018. This is Brad’s second
time competing at Sydney Royal, he also qualified in 2017. The
win makes Brad an automatic representative for NSW in 2019. The
National Finals are held at Sydney Royal alongside the State
Finals. The National winner for 2018 went to QLD.
Well done Brad, also a great achievement.
YEAR 9 ENGLISH
On the 27th April some very lucky Year 9 students, 3 Year 12s, Miss Jolley and Mrs Ormond were
fortunate enough to go to Griffith Regional Theatre to see the play A Town Named War Boy. We
met Snow, Huddo, Tom and John and learned about their hopes, dreams, pride and their belief that
going to war would be a great adventure. We followed them from when they enlisted in World War
I, through their long journey to Egypt by boat and their adventures in Cairo before they entered
battle.
We were confronted with their absolute fear as they landed on the shores of Gallipoli and engaged
in often horrific battle and tried to overcome losing hope as they were dealing with the heat, the
cold, the rotting corpses of dead friends and the rats. We were also touched by the performance of
Joshua McElroy who played Snow, a survivor who is forced to overcome not just the loss of his
hand in the war but also his anguish at the loss of his friends and the guilt he experiences as a
survivor. We laughed at John, played by Simon Croker, the 16-year-old artist who forged a letter
from his mother to enlist, because he could already shoot a gun, and were devastated by the end
when we learned of his death.
The most amazing part of this production is that it is based on the diaries of World War I
servicemen. Through these characters we hear the words written by Archie Barwick, who was
excited to enlist, fought at Gallipoli and wrote about the loss of his friends and his inner struggle
with fear. We heard from Ellis Silas, an artist and signaller who served at Gallipoli. Harry Gissing
who was a pharmacist and served in the medical corps and Jack Hutton, a jockey who wrote like a
poet, had a wicked sense of humour and from whose diary the name of the play is derived.

FISHING REPORT
Years 9 and 10 have started fishing for sport this term. We have
seen some great fish being pulled in, including a 54cm and 55cm
cod. Fifteen fish have been caught so far over the first seven
weeks, making for some exciting times at sport.

TOUCH REPORT
The Open Boys and Girls Touch team head to Griffith recently for the CHS knockout. Both teams
won two out of four games defeating Finley and Leeton High convincingly. All students showed
great sportsmanship, and it's always a pleasure to take them away to this event. Special thanks also
to Matt Coelli for helping out.
Catherine Gray | PE Teacher
TENNIS REPORT
On Monday 9th April four students headed to Temora for the CHS Tennis knockout. Michael Holz,
Johnny Holz, Rory Walsh and Dan James were the winners of a school competition that saw them
land a place to represent YAHS in the Knockout. The boys played against RAPS in Round 1 with
the boys just going down four sets to three. In absolutely freezing conditions these boys played
exceptionally well, and showed great sportsmanship on and off the field. This is the first time in
recent years YAHS has entered a tennis team, and these four boys should be extremely proud of
themselves.

CHESS REPORT
The YAHS First Grade Chess Team defeated
Narrandera High School 3 - 1 in the first round of
the NSW Junior Chess League Country Secondary
Schools Competition. Joel Jenkins, Noel Williams
and George Clark were all victorious while Jack
Dickson suffered a narrow loss. We are looking
forward to the next round! And remember: Never
underestimate the power of a pawn.
