Principal’s News Welcome to Week 8 of Term 4 at Yanco Public School. Yanco Public School’s ‘Big Lunch’ On Tuesday Year 5/6 created a ‘pop up kitchen restaurant’ called Surfer’s Delight and cooked lunch for the whole school, utilising produce from the school’s garden. All students and staff dined at the outdoor restaurant created under the veranda of the canteen and I am sure everyone enjoyed their meal. Under the guidance of Mrs McClymont, Year 5/6 prepared invitations, a restaurant menu and table decorations. The menu consisted of delicacies such as bacon and leek quiche, gourmet sausage rolls, fried rice, pasta and spicy meatballs. Congratulations to Years 4-5 for a brilliant effort and to Mrs McClymont for her organisation. Light Up Leeton This Sunday, 1 December 2013, Yanco PS will perform two items at this year’s Light Up Leeton festivities. K/1/2 will perform ’12 Aussie days of Christmas’, while Years 3-6 will perform ‘Aussie Jingle Bells.’ Students will take to the stage at 7.00 pm for their performance. A permission note and organisation for the student’s performances will be sent home with students tomorrow, please ensure you are informed. EnviroMentors Last Friday students participated in workshops provided by as part of the EnviroMentors program. Students participated in activities that relayed the importance of recycling, to improve environmental outcomes. The visit was funded by RAMROC, the Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils and we would like to thank them for their generous support. Equity Funding In 2014 Yanco Public School will receive increased equity funds through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM) based on socio economic data and Indigenous students. The third in a series of information sheets on the reforms currently taking place within the NSW Department of Education and Communities is attached to this week’s newsletter. Please take the time to keep informed with the reforms currently underway, either by reading the information provided in the school newsletter of by visiting the department’s website at https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au LHS Orientation Day and Parent Information Evening This Wednesday, Leeton High School will be holding their Orientation Day for Year 7 students in 2014. Last week all parents of students in Year 6 enrolled to attend Leeton High School in 2014 were sent home an information pack including a letter from the Principal of Leeton High School Mr Greg Horton and information on a Parent Information Evening being held at the high school. Please ensure that the permission note to attend the day is completed and returned to Yanco PS.

School Swimming A quick reminder to all parents and caregivers that the K-6 Swimming program commenced today, with all students and staff travelling to the Leeton Town Pool and all students swimming ability tested. All organisational details were in the permission note previously sent home with students. At this stage more parent helpers are required to assist staff with implementing the program. If you can assist please contact the school on (02) 6955 7162. Proud and Deadly Awards The Leeton Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG) will host this year’s Proud and Deadly Awards at Parkview Public School next Wednesday, 4 December 2013 at 6.00 pm. A number of students at Yanco Public School will be receiving awards, as previously publicised in the school newsletter. I look forward to seeing members of the school community at the awards. Primary Principals Association Meeting This Friday I will be attending an area meeting of the NSW Primary Principal’s Association (NSWPPA). One of the major topics for discussion will be a plan by the NSW Department of Education and Communities to change the status of teaching principals, with a plan to have all teaching principals become Lead Teachers. This would mean that Yanco Public School would no longer have a principal. I will keep the community informed on the current debate with regular updates in the school newsletter. End of Year Activities As we work our way towards the end of the year numerous activities will take place. These include:

• Friday, 6 December 2013 – School Captains (2014) Speeches at school assembly

• Thursday, 12 December 2013 – Year 6 Farewell at Yanco All-Servicemen’s Club

• Friday, 13 December 2013 - School Christmas Party • Tuesday, 17 December 2013 – School Presentation

Night Parents and caregivers will be notified of all organisation for these events via the school newsletter and also with letters sent home with students. Until next week Tim Allen

School Uniform A reminder to all parents and cares that school uniform items are available from the school during office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We have been greatly encouraged by the number of students wearing new hats this summer

Sports Report School Swimming K-6 School Swimming will take place again this year, with the swimming program commencing this week. Students will travel by bus to the Leeton Town Pool each afternoon from Monday to Thursday during weeks 8, 9 and 10 of this term. Please ensure your child comes to school prepared for swimming. All students will require swimmers, a towel, their school hat and $2 for bus travel. Students may also bring a pair of thongs to wear to the pool and return. Please note that thongs are not to be worn to school. T20 Cricket Gala Day Due to changes in the PSSA calendar LNPSSA will now hold the Boy’s T20 Cricket Gala Day at the end of the year, for boys in Years 4 and 5 only. They may then be eligible for selection in the Riverina PSSA Cricket team when in Year 6 the following year. The T20 Cricket Gala Day will be held on Friday, 13 December and at this stage Small Schools will be sending a team. If any students in Years 4 and 5 wish to attend, please see Mr Allen. Aquatics Fun Day On the last day of Term 4, the last day for students, all students will travel to Yanco Agricultural High School for an Aquatics Fun Day at their pool. All students swimming ability will be tested during the K-6 Swimming Program and students will be required to wear a coloured wrist band indicating their swimming ability. Notes for the organisation will be sent home with students next week.

News from the Classrooms Year 5/6 Last week students cooked a school lunch with Mrs McClymont. Cooking is fantastic activity to teach students how the skills they learn in literacy and numeracy relate to everyday living. Some of the comments from students include: Monique; We learn about maths while cooking and it’s more interesting Daniel; We were following procedures when reading the recipes Macy; It was fun growing most of the food ourselves and preparing it. Rhys; We learnt about healthy eating and being safe around knives.

K/1/2 K/1/2 are starting Christmas this week. We are busily making our Christmas props for Light Up Leeton this Sunda. This week we are focusing on words that enyd in ‘y’. News this week is :My favourite part of Christmas”. Next week’s news is ‘My favourite family tradition at Christmas”. It would be appreciated if you could discuss this with your children. Congratulations to 3/4/5/6 for the fantastic effort they put in last week. The lunch was absolutely delicious. Each and every student did a fantastic job and should be very proud of themselves.

Canteen News

The canteen will be open every day after swimming for the sale of iceblocks

How to Get the Best Out of Mathletics

• Take an active role in your child's mathematics progress.

• Encourage your child to use Mathletics 3 to 5 times a week.

• Encourage a balance between the Full Curriculum section and Live Mathletics.

• Take time to work together with your child. The Support Centre in each activity will help show how to solve a particular problem.

• Encourage your child to do activities that challenge, rather than those he/she finds easy.

• If the Course is too difficult or too easy, then change to a more appropriate Course.

• Celebrate your child's successes. Print the Certificates out and put them on the fridge!
