Yalta Conference & Potsdam Conference

Yalta Conference

• Also known as Crimea Conference and codenamed the Argonaut Conference.

• During the month of February 1945 , Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin otherwise known as the “Big Three” met up to discuss the plans for Germany now that it has been conquered.

• The meeting lasted 7 days

• When this meeting happened the WWll

was still going on

Agreements

• If Stalin joined the war against Japan he would get territories in Asia.

• Germany had to pay war reparations.

• Germany was split up into four zones for France, Great Britain, Soviet Union and the United States.

• Stalin would receive Poland if he allowed elections.

Potsdam Conference

• From July 16-August 2 1945 there was another meeting held in Potsdam, Germany to discuss post-WWll agreements. Stalin, Churchill, Attlee, and US President Truman (replaced Roosevelt after his death) were all present at the meeting.

Agreements

• The United States, Great Britain, and China would be the three main powers fighting against Japan.

• Outlined the terms of surrender for Japan.

• Prosecution of Nazi war criminals.

• Germany’s eastern boarder was moved westward toward the Oder-Neisse line making Germany 25% smaller

• Both the Yalta and Potsdam conferences dealt with the same issues, but they had very different outcomes. Many things were settled, changes were made and new rules came about.
