Home Gardens This week we are working on Community Helper. We will be doing art projects this week. The children will draw or make people in their community who are special to them. They will also make a small post office, classroom, or a police station.

For literacy and social skills the students will write about what they are making as a team or by themselves and why they chose to make the community person and building. We will use math literacy by counting the items needed to make the art projects.

We will play outside with the balls, hats, bikes, legs, and jump ropes.

Homework this week will include activities, reading and learning site words.

On Friday, April 3rd, we had a Spring Egg Hunt. We had so many eggs and all the children had so much fun. A big thank you to all our families who donated the eggs and goodies for the plastic eggs. On Thursday, the children dyed the eggs for the hunt. This week will continue our study about clothes.

Miss Bousha’s class will be talking about "What do you know about clothes?" They will add a clothes line in the Dramatic Play area, then they will pretend to do laundry and hang it up to dry. They will be reading the book "Caps for Sale" and then create their own cap.

City Park Miss Irene's class will be talking about "How do we take care of our clothes? They will be making a washing machine and dryer with large cardboard boxes. Then, the students will create their own washer and dryer. In the discovery center, they will try to find out which type of soap makes the best bubbles: liquid, bubbles, or powder. We will let you know next week what we find out.

We will end this week with a crazy hat and hair day on Friday! There will be pictures next week. Have a great week.

Monday-Friday homework help. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s 3:30-4:30 Tutoring This week, the Teens will be making Glass catchers, Paper Mache crafts, Tie Dye shirts, Duct tape wallets, Mosaic art, and we are going to enjoy a fun cooking project they will be making Lasagna with salad and fruit kabobs. To end our

fun week we are playing Just Dance and fun game of team charades and Apples to Apples.

Last week we heard a speaker on Rethink Your Drink and the teens learned about substitutes for soda. On page 6 there is an article that talks about what they learned.

Main Y Pre- School Part Day, Full Day: This week we will be studying

trees and nature by investigating how trees and plants grow. Children will be given seeds to plant. We will be patiently watching them grow these coming next weeks. We will also be observing the plants and trees at our school and completing an experiment using celery to see how plants drink/absorb water. Calvert: Coming up next week, we will be exploring what grows on trees. The students will plant in an outdoor environment. They will have a variety of flower, vegetable, and fruit seeds to choose from to plant. Through book exploration we will learn what different kinds of flowers and fruits grow from trees. The students will be given the opportunity to fully familiarize themselves with what grows on trees by craft making. We will be having cooking and sensory experiments with yogurt and fruits.

Harada THEME: SPRING TIME This is our second week working with activities related with spring. This week we are researching some flowers that we see in spring. We will learn when is the best time to plant, what kind of care do they need, how to make the garden bloom ,and how to avoid plants that are poisonous. We are going to make 3-dimensional Daffodils and 3-dimensional popcorn. We will use lavender paint to make Tulips, Lilacs, and Iris. On Friday we will have game day.

Last week we finished our new gate which allows better protection to the families we serve. There are some pictures on page 7.

We will focus on the letters D, N and S and the letters sounds. School Age: This week in School Age, we will be studying everything about gardens. With Spring, comes the excitement of flowers and gardening. Gardens can be beautiful, purposeful, useful and therapeutic. We will study all types of gardens and the care it takes for the seeds, roots, stems and flower. We will ask the question of why gardens are used so often in famous paintings such as Claude Monet’s. We will learn about Monet and his famous paintings of gardens and ponds by painting his famous lily pond painting. We will study what grows from the garden that we can eat and even save for future use!

Happy Spring.

First 5 Toddlers - This week we will be working on the theme of bugs and insects. We will be discussing the different types of bugs and insects and do activities that help to promote the theme by doing an “I Spy” activity when we are outside. Some of the other things we will be doing include a leaf and grass collage, finger painting, stamp painting, and a goop discovery activity.

State Toddlers – Tie Dye will be our way of introducing colors. We will be looking at the color of flowers around the school. Bottle spray painting and colorful bubbles will be explored with children. A collage with tissue paper, coffee filter, spray bottles and glue will be our craft. We will finish the week by tie dying a shirt.

Preschool – Classroom 1 we will continue the study on buildings and focus this week on who builds the buildings and what kind of tools do they use. Our books this week will focus on buildings and we will use flannel board pieces to re-tell the story. We will demonstrate some tools through pictures and children will create blue prints.

Preschool – Classroom 2 we will conclude the study

of trees. The children will be discussing the life cycle of the trees from seed to the tree’s end. What makes the tree grow and how does a big tree grow from a small seed.

Preschool – We will be studying trees and children will be tree rub coloring, also dying white carnations. The children will look at what size trees are around the center.

School age - We will be learning about the spring season and the children will be planting this week. The children will continue art projects of rainbows and spring. They will be playing games in small groups such as dominoes, checkers etc.. The children will start back with homework as spring break is over.

We will begin our study on Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Our investigation on Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle is a study about materials that can be recycled and reused. We will ask the children if they know what materials are recycled and how we can reduce wasting materials. We will ask the children open ended questions and help them learn about materials that can be recycled.

The children will explore with a variety of materials to recycle. They will describe what materials they see at home that are recyclable, using complete sentences. The children will learn about how recycling is important and why we should recycle.

In addition, we will read the books from Judith Stamper “Sam Helps Recycle” from Nancy Williams

“Don’t Lose It- Reuse It!” and from Lisa Matsumoto “The adventures of Gary & Harry a Tale of Two

Turtles”. The children will be able to learn new

vocabulary words such as, trash, bottles, cans,

P A G E 6 “Rethink Your Drink” On Thursday, April 2nd, at our Y Community Center, our teens and Youth and Government delegates participated in a presentation from Sheryl Uribe, Laura Moreno, Jane Ngo (Bachelor of Science Nursing Student), and Melissa Repato (RN Barlow Respiratory Hospital) called “Rethink Your Drink.” They educated our students on the Center for Disease Control Guide to strategies for reducing the Consumption of Sugar Sweetened Beverages. They introduced some suggestions you can make to reduce the amount of sugar intake in diet. They also discussed beverages such as sodas, explained the risk and danger of what sodas and energy drinks can do to your body and health. As well, they discussed the importance of alternative drinks that are better for your health. The teens and Youth and Government delegates really enjoyed the presentation at the end they had a quiz and were given prizes.
