Utah Valley University | November 3-4

Utah Valley University’s 5th annual conference on Writing for Social Change challenges students and community members to effect positive change in the world through the power of writing. Our mission is to empower students and community members with the writing skills and experience they need to effect positive change based on their own life experiences. The conference provides students and other presenters with an audience for their research, writing, art, and other social change project presentations. Each presenter also receives invaluable, confidence-building experience by sharing their work in a formal, academic setting.

UVU is located in Orem, Utah and is home to more than 30,000 students. UVU began as a vocational school during World War II and, in the decades since, has evolved into a technical school, community college, state college, and a comprehensive regional teaching university. UVU is Utah’s largest institution of higher learning and offers programs ranging from career training to high-demand masters degrees, with an emphasis on undergraduate education.

Scott Poole is the author of three books of poetry, The Cheap Seats, Hiding from Salesmen, and The Sliding Glass Door. He is the house poet for Live Wire!, a weekly radio variety show on Oregon Public Broadcasting that airs throughout the Pacific Northwest and 35 stations across the U.S.

Doug Fabrizio has been reporting for KUER News since 1987, and became News Director in 1993. In 2001, he became host and executive producer of KUER’s RadioWest, a one hour conversation/call-in show on KUER 90.1 in Salt Lake City. He has interviewed everyone from Isabel Allende to the Dalai Lama, and from Madeleine Albright to Desmond Tutu.

Right there on the dollar bill.Just now. Take a look.His eyes are half-liddedand his mouth is a flat line,with the corners waiting to curl.

His expression says,“Today, before breakfast,I founded a countrybased on the idealsof freedom, libertyand the pursuit of happinessand now I’ve just tolda joke involvinga milk cow,wooden teethand a priapistic gopher.”

You never know,he might have justslipped that wig onfor comedic effect.

You can tell he’s thinking,“Hey pal, I foundedthis country for you.Are you going to peeyour pants with laughternow, or what?”

He looks like he’sgoing to bea little morethan miffedif you say no.
