Celebrated on November 1st, the Christian holiday of All Saint's Day honors and recognizes all of the saints of the Christian church, many of which were martyrs. The church sets this day aside to celebrate over 10,000 recognized saints. We will discuss the top ten most influential Saints such as: The Apostle Paul, Mother Teresa, St. Patrick and others. Short video excepts will be show. If you have a saint you would like us to discuss in this class, please see Christine prior to the class date.

September - "Caravaggio" - Michelangelo Merisi Di Caravaggio (1571-1610) was the most influential and controversial Italian painter in the 17th century. His paintings were often shockingly realistic, and he made dramatic use of light and shade. HIs life was dramatic too - he killed a man and spent the rest of his life on the run.

Meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace. See how you can easily learn to practice meditation whenever you need it most. Learn about the different types of meditation and the elements of meditation. A quick lecture will start this class and then we will put what we have learned to use.

October - "Edouard Manet" - Édouard Manet (1832-1883) was a French painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Manet wanted to be a respected artist, but his paintings caused scandal after scandal. In 1881, he received one of the highest awards in France, but by the time he received the recognition he craved, it was too late.

December - "Titan" - Tiziano Vecellio's (1488-1576) career started early. He was probably around 12 years old when he went to study painting in the Italian city of Venice with leading artist, Gentile Bellini. Titan painted everything from portraits and nude women to dramatic action scenes. His talent so outshone other artists of his day, they called him 'the Sun among small stars'.

November - "Jan van Eyck" - A Flemish painter and one of the leading Flemish painters of the Netherlandish Renaissance, Van Eyck mastered the art of oil painting, which was a new invention. He is considered one of the most talented painters of 15th century Europe and is best known for his highly realistic figure painting, usually on religious subjects, and portrait art. His hallmark three-quarter pose of face together with his mastery of oils brought a startling new realism to portraiture, and made him one of the foremost painters of the Northern Renaissance.

Residents go through his obstacle course of walking backwards, stepping on certain blocks, walking over blocks, all while having fun and building up their strength for improved balance. Music is played, people clap along to encourage one another, and different stretches are taught throughout the class. Come join us for this fun and exciting new class!

All beer styles can be easily identified and differentiated by three simple measurements: color, bitterness, and gravity. Join Mary as she discusses different beers that you will be able to taste test!

Billiards can be lifelong passions, combining physical exercise and substantial hand-eye coordination in a social game that’s just plain fun. Join Vinny and Keisha in learning the popular game of 8 ball. All are invited from beginner to pool masters!

For all you Bingo lovers out there, this is a fun, informative class on the history of Bingo! The Italians are credited with being the inventors of Bingo! No, the name doesn't mean anything in Italian. Actually, the game was first called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D' Italia." From Italy, it went to France in the late 1770's and they shortened the name to "Le Lotto" and played strictly among the wealthy French aristocrats. In the 1880's the Germans then developed their version of Bingo as an educational game for children to help learn math, spelling and history. The game reached the US during the depression and was first played at a carnival in Atlanta, Georgia! Learn more about how the name evolved and how it made its way to the US!

But there is more to the story of the explorer we celebrate with a federal holiday on the second Monday of every October. As historians have continued to learn and write more about the real life of Christopher Columbus, controversy has arisen over the validity of honoring the explorer as a hero. What are your thoughts?

Dominoes, like playing cards and dice, are something of a generic gaming device. They are simple building blocks that can be assembled in innumerable ways to create a large variety of games, ranging from the simple to the complex, from games in which the gameplay is almost mechanical, to games that require great skill and strategy. Dominoes evolved from dice. In fact, the numbers in a standard double-six domino set represent all the rolls of two six-sided dice. The game is believed to have originated in China in the 12th century, though Egyptian or Arabian origins are also theorized. Dominoes appeared in Italy in the early eighteenth century, and spread to the rest of Europe throughout the remainder of the 1700's, becoming one of the most popular games in both family parlors and pubs alike. Learn how to play a beginner's game with Marcus!

September - "Recycling: How We Can Help Save The World" - It has become increasingly apparent that human beings must make some major changes in order to reverse some of the damage they have done to the environment. Recycling is one of the best examples of an effort that can have a very positive impact on the fate of the planet. The more people who choose to recycle, the greater the impact recycling will have on the environment. Learn ways you can help and what other people and even corporations are doing today to help save our planet.

December - "What Does Going Green Mean?" - Going green means implementing certain lifestyle changes designed to help you live in a more eco-friendly way. It means becoming more environmentally aware and changing your behavior and lifestyle to reduce the amount of pollution and waste you generate. The decision to go green is a gradual process for most people. Any action you take that contributes to sustainable living makes a positive impact on the environment. Everyone can implement small changes into his or her current lifestyle to make a difference for the Earth and future generations.

October - "Wildlife Conservation" - More than 40 percent of Americans expressed concern about wildlife conservation and associated environmental issues, such as endangered species, animal and plant extinction, coral bleaching, introduction of invasive species, poaching, and loss of natural animal habitats resulting in relocation and a break in the food chain. Learn more about wildlife conservation and how we can help.

November - "What Are the Main Causes of Global Warming?" - There are numerous causes of global warming. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these causes can be divided into two primary groups: natural causes and man-made causes. While humans can do little to eradicate natural causes, it is possible to reduce or eliminate man-made causes.

Is there a person in history you want to learn more about? This class includes trivia about the person, we talk about their life and also incorporate video clips. Pain is a costly epidemic that causes millions of Americans to suffer and Pain Awareness Month initiatives are intended to get people to recognize the effects of pain and the symptoms associated with pain so that you can find appropriate relief and regain a strong quality of life. Join Barbara Mullins, R.N. to learn measures you can take to reduce pain.

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats. September - "Why Do We Light A Lamp?" - Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness, ignorance. The Lord is the “Knowledge Principle” (Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Knowledge is the everlasting wealth that is capable of removing ignorance just as the light removes darkness. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself. Join Chandra as she discusses in more detail, the significance behind lighting a lamp in the Hindu Culture.

October - "Why Do We Have A Prayer Room?" - Puja literally means to “ worship “, “ adore “, “ honour “, or “ pay respect”. Puja room or a prayer room is an intrinsic part of every Hindu household. Instead of a room, sometimes it is a cupboard or a corner, comparatively more quiet than other parts of the house. This is mainly because rituals such as puja are an integral part of Hindu worship .

November - "Why Do We Wear Certain Marks On The Forehead" - Many people of India, especially those who follow the Hindu religion, wear colored markings on their foreheads and other parts of their bodies. In general, forehead markings identify a person's third eye, or what Hindus believe is the center of a person's nervous system, the area in which a person can see spiritual truths. These markings usually take the form of red, white, and black dots or lines, or combinations of dots and lines, which have either social or religious meanings.

December - "Why Do We Not Touch Papers, Books and People With the Feet?" - In Indian homes, we are taught from a very young age; never to touch papers, books and people with our feet. If the feet accidentally touch people, books, musical instruments, or any other educational equipment, children are told reverentially touched what was stamped with their hands and then touch their eyes as a mark of apology. Learn more about the Hindu Culture with Chandra in this series of "Why We Do Not...".

The Month of September: "Ronald Reagan" - Ronald Reagan, originally an American actor and politician, became the 40th President of the United States serving from 1981 to 1989. His term saw a restoration of prosperity at home, with the goal of achieving "peace through strength" abroad. Learn more about his life and his presidency with Prudence.

The Month of October: "The Summer of 1776" - The summer months of 1776 witnessed the most consequential events in the story of our country’s founding. While the thirteen colonies came together and agreed to secede from the British Empire, the British were dispatching the largest armada ever to cross the Atlantic to crush the rebellion in the cradle. The Continental Congress and the Continental Army were forced to make decisions on the run, improvising as history congealed around them. Prudence will discuss the book "The Summer of 1776" for the first two weeks in October and then the following two weeks she will show a movie on the Revolutionary War.

December - "Come In From The Cold" - Cold weather can pose serious health hazards to older adults. Falls and other accidents, hypothermia and depression are more common as the temperature drops. The key to safety is prevention. Join in as Maria Soto, R.N., reviews simple tips to ensure a safe season.

The Month of December: "97 Orchard Street" - It was easy to overlook 97 Orchard Street. The building was but one of the thousands of tenements that sprouted up on the Lower East Side during the nineteenth century. However, for Lukas Glockner, 97 Orchard Street wasn't just another tenement; it was a ticket to prosperity. When the German immigrant opened his tenement in 1863, he was hoping to turn a profit by providing cheap homes to the immigrants who were flooding into Manhattan. The tenement fulfilled Glockner's dreams: people filled the building and swelled his pocketbook. Indeed, between 1863 and 1935, 7000 tenants lived in 97 Orchard Street. The lives of some of these residents are the basis of this historical class with Prudence.

The Month of November: "The Life of Harry Truman" - Harry S. Truman was born in Missouri on May 8, 1884. He was Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s vice president for just 82 days before Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. In his first months in office he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, ending World War II. His policy of communist containment started the Cold War, and he initiated U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Throughout the 1960s and '70s, she developed her trademark interviewing style though long-standing jobs on NBC's Today show and ABC's 20/20. Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, is held annually in Munich, Germany. It is known as much for its traditional folk music as it is for its beer drinking. The folk festival has given its name to similar festivals worldwide that are at least in part modeled after the original Bavarian Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate the October 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The festival was eventually prolonged and moved ahead to September to allow for better weather conditions. Today, the last day of the festival is the first Sunday in October. Oktoberfest concert with Lee's Musicians will be held on Friday, September 18th at 3:30 pm in the AS and will follow with an Oktoberfest themed diner served in the main dining room. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year". When most people hear the term New Year they think of partying and celebrating however, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. Step out of your real self for a moment! As a character, we can let go of our problems and concerns for a while and play the role of someone else. It’s becoming increasingly clear to the medical community that it’s just as important for older adults to stay active as it is for their younger counterparts. Join Roseann for her exercise class and start your way down a healthier path today!

It’s a quiet afternoon at your house; the phone rings so you answer. On the other end sounds like a young person who is under a lot of stress and they’re speaking very quickly. “Hi Grandma- it’s me! Sorry I haven’t called in a while but I’m on a trip with my friends and there’s been a big mix-up and sorry, but I don’t really have time to get into all the details, but I’m kind of in jail in Mexico! We didn’t do anything wrong but we need $1,000 by tonight to get out of jail! I couldn’t get a hold of my parents- can you wire the money right away?!?” What would you do in this situation? How can you say no? Would you ask for proof? Unfortunately, this is one of many unlawful tactics used by criminals to prey on senior citizens. I’m sure you’ve heard stories about a trusting senior citizen who lost a lot of money to a scam of some sort. Kathy will discuss what to look out for and how to avoid being scammed, please join us.

Did you know that the origin of “cold feet” comes from a military term? A man who has cold or frozen feet – a common affliction until the late 19th century – can’t rush into battle, and so proceeds slowly. Come and test your knowledge and/or learn the history behind some of the most commonly used sayings.

We will discuss some of the unexplained mysteries of the world. Is there a Big Foot roaming the earth? What is Area 51 all about? Is there compelling evidence to say that the Loch Ness Monster once, or still does exist? Let's try to offer some rational explanations for these so-called mysteries as we learn more about them, including the direct evidence that debunks some of them.

Why do so many people consume healthy smoothies on a regular basis? We have our own reasons, but thought it would be fun and helpful for others to collect all of the more popular reasons into one lesson. Many of the reasons you will learn about are associated with a particular health benefit and a particular fruit or vegetable that is used. Join Claudette as we taste test and learn about this healthy craze!

Core exercises are about more than just strengthening your abdominal muscles; they also strengthen your hips, back and all muscles in the midsection of the body. Join us for this interesting spin on core training!

The most overlooked and arguably, the most important word in health is “balance”. Better body balance makes it easier to move and helps prevent injury. But it’s a “use it or lose it” kind of thing, which means it’s important to practice balance at all ages. Meet Jeff Ciolino, Occupational Therapist and Balance Specialist! Residents go through his obstacle course of walking backwards, stepping on certain blocks, walking over blocks, all while having fun and building up their strength for improved balance. Music is played, people clap along to encourage one another, and different stretches are taught throughout the class. Come join us for this fun and exciting new class!

Join Aliecha every Saturday to learn how to create different craft projects. In May, we will be creating Greeting Cards in this class. June will be beading bracelets. This class has a meaningful purpose as well…everything we create will be donated to a local Children's Hospital. If you have a special craft project that you would like to create to donate, please let Aliecha know so she can purchase the supplies for the project.

Term Drum Circle originated in US during late 60s and early 70s for any group of people, particularly counterculture groups who gather informally to play music together. Determining criteria for a drum circle is that the music is improvised and co-created by the participants. The music created from drum circles is always a group expression, not constrained by genre, instrumentation, or directed by one person or sub-group. Instrumentation centers around drums and percussion but may include other instruments, such as flutes, didgeridoos, and other non-percussion instruments. Community drum circles differ from facilitated or conducted drum circles in that the music is entirely improvised though a process of group interaction and are the most popular form of improvised drumming. Michael will bring various drum and non drum instruments so that we get the full community drum circle experience for all those participating. Let’s see what we come up with during our “jam session”!

Johnny Appleseed: The Legend Aliecha Campbell Saturday, September 26th 10:30 am

December - "Why Do We Not Touch Papers, Books and People With the Feet?" - In Indian homes, we are taught from a very young age; never to touch papers, books and people with our feet. If the feet accidentally touch people, books, musical instruments, or any other educational equipment, children are told reverentially touched what was stamped with their hands and then touch their eyes as a mark of apology. Learn more about the Hindu Culture with Chandra in this series of "Why We Do Not...".

Every month we will have a different health topic to discuss that Barbara, and/or Maria will be leading. These informative classes will also have literature and videos that will be shown. ~ September - "Pain Awareness" ~ October - "Breast Cancer Awareness" ~ November - "National Alzheimer's Awareness Month" ~ December - "Come In From The Cold"

Johnny Appleseed Day honors one of America's great legends. Johnny Appleseed was a real person. John Chapman was among the American settlers who were captivated by the movement west across the continent. As Johnny Appleseed travelled west, he planted apple trees along the way, and sold trees to settlers. With every apple tree that was planted, the legend grew.
