The international Commission on Illumination (CIE) invented a method for representing color in 1931. The 1931 CIE chromaticity diagram is a tool to illustrate how the human eye experiences light, using an x-y coordinate system.

The monochromatic colors are on the outside edge of the diagram. All combinations of colors are on the inside, with white colors in the middle.

Color temperature refers to stages of white light and is measured on the Planck law of blackbody radiator scale.

This scale measures the color of a blackbody radiator (an ideal device with perfect absorption and emission) at various Kelvin temperatures. Not all “white” light (such as fluorescent light) lies directly on the Planckian black-body radiator curve. CCT (Correlated Color Temperatures) refers to the Planckian black-body radiator color temperature (CT) that is closest to the color of the white light source.

CRI is an objective standard used to judge how well a light source renders colors, compared to a black-body radiator or daylight. The CRI is 100 when the object is shined by the sun or incandescent light. However, the object has been a different distortion in different light source. The lower CRI, the more color distortion.

XLamp MP-L EasyWhite LEDs reduce LED-to-LED color variation to within a 4-step MacAdams ellipse around the desired color temperature, which is 75% smaller than the total area of the corresponding ANSI C78.377 color region.
