Deliverables:-

1. Report on management & monitoring around world (incorporating views of stakeholders) (Journal paper).

2. Compilation report – all CSs. incl. inventory of fisheries, biological, biodiversity, VME & socio-economic data.

4. Database (IFREMER)

Definition of deep-water fish and fisheries

• NE Atlantic - literature search worldwide• ICES >400 m but >200m• What about species also found on shelf• Cannot use life history characteristics• In past largely driven by species covered by

ICES WGDEEP, includes ling, tusk & conger eel but excludes redfish, blue whiting, Greenland halibut & red crab.

• Need the Commission view on scope – TAC Regulation & licensed spp.?

Salient characteristics of deep-water environment in NE Atlantic

• Depends on definition of deep-water.• Seamounts – should include?• Steve Dye – senior hydrographer at Cefas.

Review of management & monitoring frameworks around the world

• Management and monitoring of stocks/fisheries, target & bycatch spp., biodiversity, VMEs.

• Current EU & ICES regime –(recent EC & EP reviews)• FAO guidelines on VMEs and d/w fisheries• NAFO/NEAFC/SEAFO, Mediterr. & CCAMLR:TXOTX.• NZ regime (Paul Marchal)• PRONE (risk analysis) & POORFISH (assessment &

management in data-poor stocks/fisheries).• Risk analysis in Australian waters (Hobday et al, 2007,

Smith et al, 2007)• VIEWS OF STAKEHOLDERS & literature search

Progress & developments in DCR, PGNEACS & EU Sampling Plans• DCR – has been revised to take greater account

of sampling for d/w species, observer costs & provision of VMS data.

• PGNEACS – meeting in June – WGDEEP given the group a strong steer to focus primarily on international surveys to generate abundance indices for assessments.

• EU MS Sampling Plans – need to be peer-reviewed, fit for purpose and transparent.

Review outcomes of ICES Benchmark Meetings

• WGDEEP - should complement and not duplicate the work of DEEPFISHMAN (maximise use of resources).

• Benchmark assessment meeting in late 2009 (?) • R. grenadier in Vb, VI & VII, Greater silver smelt in all

areas, tusk in Va ,Red seabream in X ,D/W squaliform sharks and greater forkbeard in all areas.

• Benchmark EA meeting – assessment of and indicators for ecosystem components of Celtic Seas (VI &VII) and Oceanic NE Atlantic eco-regions.

• Benchmark meeting –2012 to evaluate and, where appropriate, integrate the outcomes of DEEPFISHMAN into the ICES framework.

Data available & assessment/EA methods & management measures

used in CS stocks• Detailed inventory of fisheries, biological, biodiversity,

VME & socio-economic data• Develop a database (with Ifremer)• Ifremer will manage database & store data.• Preserve vessel anonymity - level of disaggregation?• Work with WP & CS Leaders - review & evaluate

assessment/EA methods used & management measures applied.

• If appropriate, make recommendations for improvements & data collection.
