A. James's Problem her nearest relative was the King of Scotland, James Stuart...he

was next in-line... he became the King of England and changed his name to James I. He inherited a huge debt that Elizabeth had run up...and the legislative branch of their overnment, the

Parliament didn'tlike him at all...so...guess what is going to happen...conflicts...

B. Charles I Fights Parliament1625... James dies...his son Charles I takes his place. Again money was his problem and he had to ask Parliament for it...and they didn't want to...In 1628 he again asks...they say OK BUT...you have to sign this paper that says you agree to the following things...

4)

Then after signing it he decided he didn't want to do those things so he didn't...but the concept of those ideas and the relationship between the King's power and Parliament's power was after this...writtendown on paper... the concept that even the absolute???monarch had to obey laws...

take the Church of England's religion Scotish Protestant got angry enoughto start the process of invading England... Charles neede funds to fight them and protect his control...Parliament saw a way to take more power away from him...

A. War Topples a KingWhen Chaeles found out what they had done he decided to arrest them and take over control of all the Parliament and get rid of them...he would make laws himself...most of them escaped and decided to attack him-get rid of him...he decided to run and create an army who supported him and attack them...this is called the English Civil War...they fought for 7 years...his forces called the 'Royalists or Cavaliers' and the Parliament forces called the 'Roundheads'...mostly even war until the Roundheads got a mean new General to lead them...Oliver Cromwell...his army called The New Model Army kicked the king's forces all over the place...they captured Charles and tried him for treason and then excuted him...

III. Restoration and Revolution

A. Charles II ReignsAfter the tough rule of Cromwell and the Purtans...the people of England were tired...the hated military rule...so they forced Parliament to vote to ask the older son of Charles I to return and be their King...in 1660 he decided to return and take over 'king-duties'...Parliament decided to pass additional laws that would take even more power away from their monarch...but he agreed and returned ...this period wascalled the 'Restoration'...
