3WACRA ® News Fall 2013

The graceful wrought-iron spire of the Eiffel Tower, the broad span of the Arc de Triomphe standing sentinel above Paris’most glamorous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, the gargoyled Notre Dame cathedral, lamplit bridges spanning the Seine andart nouveau cafes spilling onto wicker-chair-lined terraces are indelibly etched in the minds of anyone who’s visited the city– and the imaginations of anyone who hasn’t (or at least not yet). But despite initial appearances, Paris’ cityscape isn’t static:there are some stunning modern and contemporary icons too.

Paris’ dining is also iconic: France’s reputation for its cuisine (the French word for ‘kitchen’) precedes it. Whether you seeka cosy neighbourhood bistro, a secret supper club or a triple-Michelin-starred temple to gastronomy, you’ll find everyestablishment prides itself on exquisite preparation and presentation of quality produce, invariably served with wine. Enticingpatisseries, boulangeries (bakeries), fromageries (cheese shops) and crowded, colourful street markets are perfect forpacking a picnic to take to the city’s parks and gardens. And a host of culinary courses – from home kitchens through to theworld’s most prestigious cookery schools – offer instruction for all schedules, abilities and budgets.

Parisians are synonymous with style and fashion shopping is the city’s forte. Paris remains at the forefront of internationalfashion trends, and browsing emerging and establisheddesigner boutiques and flagship haute couture housesis a quintessential part of any visit. You’ll also finduberhip concept stores, quirky home and gardenshops, and resplendent art nouveau department stores, along with a trove of vintage shops and flea markets, atmospheric bookshops (including the distinctive green-metal bouquiniste stalls lining the banks of the Seine),some adorable children’s wear and toy shops, art andantique dealers, venerable shops selling state-of-the-art professional cookware, and, of course, gourmetfood and wine shops galore.

With an illustrious artistic pedigree – Renoir, Rodin,Picasso, Monet, Manet, Dalí and Van Gogh are buta few of the masters who lived and worked here over theyears – Paris is one of the great art repositories of theworld, harbouring treasures from antiquity onwards. Inaddition to big hitting museums like the world’s largest, the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay’s exceptionalimpressionist collection, and the Centre Pompidou’scache of modern and contemporary art, there arescores of smaller museums housing collections inevery imaginable genre, and a diverse range of venuesmounting major exhibitions through to off-beatinstallations.

Paris’ grandeur is inspiring, but what I love mostabout the city is its intimacy. Its quartiers (quarters)are like a patchwork of villages, and while it’s one of theworld’s major metropolises – with all of the culture andfacilities that go with it – there’s a real sense ofcommunity at the local shops, markets and cafes thathasn’t changed since my childhood. Yet becauseevery little ‘village’ has its own evolving character I’mconstantly discovering and rediscovering hiddencorners of the city. The world’s only city on twocontinents has been a crossroads oftrade, culture, learning and art for over3,000 years as well as the capital of threeof the greatest empires the world hasknown. It is no accident that Istanbulwas the city the Eastern Romanemperors, The Byzantine dynasty andthe Ottoman sultans chose to call home!

Turkey has a unique geography. It isa bridge connecting not onlyEast and West, but also thepast and the future. Istanbul, the country’s cultural capital, has been an attractivesettlement for variouscivilizations since ancienttimes. Today the city is visitedby travelers who come to catcha glimpse of its ancient citywalls, enchanted churches, palaces and mosques, whilesavoring the delightful tastes ofthe city’s rich cuisine. Istanbulhas proved an attractive settlement forvarious civilizations since ancient times. Thanks to its rich history, colorful dailylife and dynamic spirit, Istanbul continuesto offer a once in a lifetime experience toits visitors. The largest city in modernTurkey, Istanbul’s cultural diversity, stateof the art accommodation, unique blendof modern and traditional dining andentertainment options and stunningly richhistory makes the 2010 European Capitalof Culture an ideal destination.Historic PeninsulaAs the former capital of the Byzantineand Ottoman empires, present dayIstanbul retains the history that emerged

Istanbulfrom the city and integrates its historicalvalues to modern life. Sultanahmet, located at the center of the historicpeninsula, is where most of Istanbul’sfamous historical sites are located.Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosqueare both situated in this dynamic part ofthe city. A few hundred meters away isthe world famous Grand Bazaar, which

for the past six centuries has been acenter for the trading of gold andauthentic Turkish produce. No visit toIstanbul is complete without crossingthe beautiful Golden Horn – the naturalharbor opening to the Bosphorus – andrelaxing on the green parks that stretchalong the shore to enjoy magnificentsunsets. With their mixed Turkish,Greek and Jewish quarters, Eyüp, Fenerand Balat are ideal for those who feel inthe mood for a little “time” travel. TheGreek Orthodox Patriarchate, whichadministers 85 churches, stands in theFener district. North of the historicpeninsula across the Golden Horn, isGalata, crowned by the Galata tower. On the nearby front of Karaköy, you canfind Istanbul Modern, a museum withexhibitions of contemporary Turkish art.The Heart of the CityBeyoglu, Istanbul’s culture and

ÝstiklalStreet is the heart of this large district fullof cinemas, theaters, restaurants, cafes, bars, and clubs and almost every visitorto Istanbul is attracted by the brightlights of the Street. North of the Taksim

Square is the newer part of thecity. High skyscrapers rise fromLevent and Maslak, the mainbusiness districts.SPECTACULAR BOSPHORUS

The Bosphorus, separatingAsia and Europe, is the ultimatetreasure and beauty of Istanbul, where the city breathes. Bothbanks of the Bosphorus aredecorated by characteristic, wooden waterside mansions, symbols of the old tradition oflarge, wealthy families residingon the Bosphorus’ shores.Fishing dominates life on theBosphorus thanks to the fertilesea. On every shore of the

Bosphorus are restaurants servingdelicious seafood.STEPPING TO ASIA

Across the Bosphorus to the east isthe Asian side centered on the historicaldistricts of Üsküdar and Kadiköy.Üsküdar is symbolized by the MaidenTower located on an islet just off theshore. The coasts of the Asian side arecharacterized by picturesque neighbor-hoods. These districts once hosted thegrand summer houses of the Ottomanelite, and today they are a vital part of thecultural life of Istanbul. Üsküdar andKadiköy are quite popular with sea-sidecafes, parks and traditional restaurantsserving popular Turkish dishes. [IstanbulConvention Visitors Bureau].
