Abstract:Theworkpresented inthiscontributionformspartoftheBREBEMIproject, inreactiontoa
majormotorwayconstructiondevelopmentlinkingthetownsofBrescia,BergamoandMilaninnorthern
Italy foratotal lengthofabout120km.For the first time in Italyasetofnoninvasiveprocedures is
beingusedsystematically inordertoreducearchaeologicalrisk inadvanceofmotorwayconstruction.
This innovative project relies on the methodical collection of information from historical and
geographicaldocumentarysources,alongwithgeomorphologicalanalysis, theexaminationofexisting
vertical air photography, the collection of new data through targeted aerial survey and oblique air
photography, the acquisition of LiDAR data along thewhole of themotorway route (160 kmq at a
resolutionof4dotsper sqm)and the systematic collection forvery substantialareasofgeophysical
data,bothmagnetic (AMP)andgeoelectrical (ARP)atotal,so far,of438hectaresofAMPandARP
data(mesh0,5x0.5mand0.5x0.08m).Testexcavationsareplannedsystematically toverifyanomalies
andtheSuperintendencyfortheRegionofLombardyisalsoinitiatingrandomtrenchingforatotalof5%
ofthesurveyedarea.AGISplatformfortheprojecthasbeendesignedtomanageandintegrateallof
thedataateverystageofdevelopment (fromdataacquisition in the field to interpretationand field
checking)aswellastodemonstrateoverallpatternsandtocreatepredictivemodels.Theobjectivesof
theprojectaretoreduceasfarpossibleuncertaintyaboutthepresenceofarchaeologicalremainsalong
therouteandinparticulartoidentifyareaswhichshouldbeprotectedfromdestructionbecauseofthe
presenceofeitherupstandingorburiedarchaeologicalremains.

Title:ResultsoftheSurvey2010onVenetianOttomanremainsintheNationalParkofButrint,Albania
Abstract:InthispresentationanintroductionoftheresultsofasurveycarriedoutintheNationalPark
ofButrint(Albania) insummer2010 isoffered.TheNationalParkofButrint isaprivilegedreservefor
environmentandheritageinAlbaniaandinalltheMediterranean.Theideaoftheparkdevelopedafter
andaroundthearchaeologicalsiteofButrint,HellenisticRomantownandUNESCOheritagesite.Inthe
last years, archaeologists of the Butrint Foundation have expanded their research outside the
archaeologicaltownandtowardsthesurroundingareasofthepark.Thissurveymustbeconsideredone
stepinthisexpansion.TheaimofthesurveywastotackletheissueofthePostMedievaloccupationof
theareaofButrint,andmostconcretelythoseofthetransitionbetweentheVenetianandtheOttoman
occupations.Thesurveywasundertakenbyateamoffourpeoplewhodidextensivefieldwalkingintwo
areas searching for tracesofoccupationsdescribed inhistoricalmapsanddocuments.The sites that
were foundweredatedaccording to remainsofpotteryandbuildingdebrisand comparedwith the
locationsanddescriptionsprovided in thehistoricaldocuments.The resultsofferadecentdegreeof
fiabilityandtheyarecoherentwiththoseofotherresearchactivitiescarriedoutinthearea. According
totheseresults,theOttomantakeoverofButrintmarksanabsoluteturningpointinthehistoryofthe
site, because it marks the end of a coastal tradebased economy in order to tie more tightly the
ownership of Butrint by theOttoman power in themainland. This change left strongmarks in the
landscape and helped to define the coastline as a boundary of the state of Albania since its
independenceandlaterCommunistdevelopment.

Abstract:MoturikiIslandbelongstotheLomaivitiGroupoftheFijianarchipelago,closetotheeastern
coast
of
the
main
island
of
Viti
Levu.
It
is
a
small
and
hilly
island,
10
km
long
and
2.5
km
wide.
An
archaeological surveyprojecthasbeendeveloped for studyingMoturiki settlement in the contextof
Fijianprehistory,sincefirsthumanoccupation(around3000yearsago)tilltheBritishcolonyattheend
ofthe19thcentury.
Moturikihasatropical forestenvironment,althoughquitemodifiedbyhumanactivities.This
landscapeoffers severalconstraints forarchaeologicalsurvey.One isageneral lackofarchaeological
visibility,duetodensevegetationcover.Anotheristhedestructionandrelocationofthearchaeological
record because the strong impact of erosion, favoured by heavy rainfall, steep slopes and human
deforestation through slashandburn agriculture. Moreover, surveyors movement across landscape
usestobehard,bothontheroughhillsandonthemarshesofthecoastallowlands.
Survey strategy has consisted of inspecting previously selected landscape areas and also
documenting accidental finds during displacements from one place to another.Different geographic
information sources have been used for planning survey, such as historical cartography and high
resolutionimagery.Localnativeguideshavebeenessentialforproperlyidentifyingandreachingsurvey
targets.Particularemphasishasbeendevotedtoplaceswithgoodvisibility(suchasagriculturalplots),
whichactasrealarchaeologicalwindowsinthissortoflandscape.GPShasbeenintensivelyusedfor
recordingbotharchaeologicalfinds(artefacts,structures)andnofindlocations.Surveyhasrevealeda
verydensearchaeologicallandscape,withsignificantpotteryscatterswherevisibilityisgoodandseveral
typesofstructuresforterrainconditioning(platforms,terraces,ditchesandsoon).

Abstract: The fact of dealingwith different site recording strategies is such a common topic in the
surveyliterature,eveninthoseconcernedwithregionalapproaches.Thisseemstobenonproblematic
forprojectswhosemaingoalrelatestotheregionalreconnaissanceofmultiperiodsettlementpatterns.
Pure siteless surveys are seldom developed. During an offsite oriented survey we found the
unexpected presence of rural settlements,whose relationshipwith the offsite landscape has to be
understoodwhilemaintainingourregionalaim.Inthisbriefpaperwewouldliketotointroduceoursite
recordingstrategy,whichwasdevelopedbasedonGPStechnology.ThisGPSGISassistedmethodology
permits excellent accuracy, avoids a large and timewasting process of grid recording and gathers
enough information to understand intrasite variations both in functionality and chronology, and
convertthisdataintoacontinuoussmoothedsurfaceratherthanotherkindofinterpolateddata.This
methodologyallowsustoconsiderthesurfacerecordinatheoreticalway.Weunderstandboththesite
andoffsiterecordaspartofasystemiccontext,wherehousefloorassemblagesalsohavealotofscope
infiguringoutthelandscapeexploitationinancienttimes.

years
we have researched inside and outside the Iberian city and the survey have increased his intensity,

comparisonswith other cases that had been developing in theMediterranean area.Nowadays it is

Abstract: We present preliminary results of recentwork developed in the Guadamez river (Serena
region, Spain). Several sites were detected through intensive survey around the early Roman
fortification of Castejon de las Merchanas. In some of them we carried out sherd collection by
systematic sampling. The field procedure and criteria for data recording are described. Exploratory
analysis of this information allows to define general trends in the internal structure of the surface
distribution.Wealsocheckthepossibilityofidentifyingmeaningfulrelationshipsbetweenthefiguresof
differentartifact types in the samplingunits. Finally, interactionwithmicro relief recordingofsites
allows to explore the dynamic dimension of processes affecting sherd movement due to erosion,
topographyandploughing.

projects inordertofacedifferentgeomorphologiccontexts.Theriversedimentation intheplainsand
theerosionofthehillslopes,togetherwithothervariousnaturalandantropogenicfactors,inducebias
thatcanbeevaluatedonlybywellconsideredstandardsincludingquantitativeandqualitativedata.We
will focus on the centuriated landscapes in both regional contexts: due to the geomorphologic

played
a
limited
role
because
of
the
mining
morphology.
For
that
reason,
a
geoarchaeological
survey
in
thestreamsofPinowascarriedoutandcombinedwithavailablegeologicaldata.Thankstothisstudy
the detection of the principal structures in the area has been possible. The analysis of the rural
landscapehasfocusedonthestudyofagroupoffarmingterracesdetectedadjacenttoPeaRedonda,
animportantromansite.

Abstract:Aspartoftherecentlystartedresearchproject"ThepeopleandtheState,materialculture,
social structure and political centralization around Rome (800 450 BC), theGroningen Institute of
Archaeology (GIA) has, as of february 2011, commenced studies of the ancient Latin site of
Crustumeriumanditsterritory.Thesestudiescomplementthecemeteryexcavationsithascarriedout
atthesitesince2006incollaborationwiththeSoprintendenzaSpecialeperiBeniArcheologicidiRoma
(dott.F.diGennaro). TheIronAgesettlementofCrustumeriumislocatedonahillplateauintheTiber
Valley about 15km north of Rome. Well known from historical sources, the site's location was
established bymethodoffieldsurveysintheseventies.Sincethenthesiteanditssurroundingshave
beenpartofmany research initiatives,allcarriedoutunder theaegisof theSSBAR.GIA'ssettlement
studies
will
in
the
first
instance
aim
at
bringing
together
old
and
new
archaeological
settlement
data
collectedover severaldecadesof researchat the siteand in its territorybyvarious researchers.The
developmentofadedicateddatabaseandGISwillthenallowtheapplicationofmethodsofanalysisthat
werepreviouslyunavailable.Assuchtheprojectmaycontributetoourunderstandingoftheprocessof
earlystateformationinwhichCrustumeriumwasinvolved,whichisamajorresearchaimoftheproject

Abstract: Since 2006 the German Archaeological Institute has been carrying out archaeological
investigationsatElaia,theportoftheancientcityofPergamononthewestcoastofTurkey.Thefirst
planofthecitywasproposedattheendofthe19thcenturybymembersofthePergamonexcavation
campaign.Sincethattimenofurtherexplorationshavetakenplaceatthishistoricallyhighlysignificant
site.Theaimoftheproject,whichisbeingfundedbytheDeutscheForschungsgemeinschaft(SPP1209),
is to reconstruct the plan of the town and the harbour by means of archaeological survey,
measurements in the shallow waters taken by pile core sampling (H. Brckner), and geophysical
prospecting(cooperationwithKielUniversity).Aceramicssurveyenablesthelocalizationofsettlement
concentrationsandaffordsinsightsintothematerialcultureofthecity.Itishopedthatbythismeans
wecanclarifyhowtheancientpolisofElaia,underthe influenceofthePergamenekings,becamean
importantmilitarybase and trading centre.On thebasis of pottery finds and a stone axe it canbe
demonstratedthatan initialsettlementalreadyexistedon theAcropolis in theearlyBronzeAge (3rd
Mill.BC).ThecityexpandedappreciablyintheHellenisticperiodwhenitbecamethemaritimesatellite
of
the
Pergamenes.
This
is
attested
by
a
Hellenistic
street
grid
and
by
an
enlarged
harbour
zone
with
mightyfortificationswhichwasdetectedwiththeaidofgeomagneticmeasurements.Thankstothehelp

of local fishermenwe foundnumerous remainsofmolesorbreakwatersextendingacrossanareaof
about1x2km;theconstructiontechnologyindicatesthattheycouldbeofHellenisticprovenance.This
importantdiscoverycould infutureshedentirelynew lightonPergamon'ssignificanceasaHellenistic
seapower.
