Just a bit from Fr. Schmidt You’re Getting Colder…

Earlier this week as people were coming out from Mass, I commented that it feels like it could snow soon. No one seemed very excited about the prospect. Monday and Tuesday this week are supposed to get close to 90, but that could end up being our last taste of summer. Monday and Tuesday are also special Feastdays, the Exaltation of the Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows. The dates correspond to the Dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Je-rusalem back in the year 327 after the discovery of the True Cross by St. Helena, Constantine’s mother.

Seems appropriate also that as we approach the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, as much of what is green turns brown or other colors, and life seems to fade from much of the natural world around us, our minds would turn once again to the supreme sacrifice of our salvation. Another reminder that even as the Death of Jesus on the Cross was not the end, so the fading and colder temperatures of this season will not be the end, even if we’ll have to wait more than a few days for spring to return.

Bishop Swain would often mention the Seven Sorrows of Mary as especially comforting, to know that our Blessed Mother endured many hardships and anxieties similar to our own, most especially as she endured with a mother’s heart the trial, crucifixion, and execution of her Beloved Son. As we enter into these cooler days, I recommend taking the Blessed Virgin as a constant companion. Reflecting upon all that she endured can help to lighten our own burdens and bring perspective to our sufferings. With firm faith, she continued to magnify the Lord who had done great things in her, to know that Christ would rise again, as He had promised.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary: 1. The Prophecy of Simeon (“A sword of sorrow shall pierce your heart.”) 2. The Flight into Egypt 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple 4. Meeting Jesus on His Way of the Cross 5. The Crucifixion 6. The Taking Down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross 7. The Burial of Jesus

Word of Life

“By our baptism, we are members of Christ’s body and shares in his mission. Imitating Christ, we must care for all members of our communities, honoring each person as unique, sacred, and created in the image of God.”
