The estate known as "Green Hill" was purchased by Dr. Thomas Green of Leicester,Massachusetts in 1754 and was inhabited by his descendents as a family home until 1905 when itwas purchased by the city of Worcester for a public park. The estate consisted of approximately500 acres of land with a farm, stone quarry, and a large mansion.
Much of the correspondence of this collection relates to William E. Green (1777-1865). Williamwas the son of Dr. John Green (1736-). He graduated from Brown University in 1798 andpracticed law with Edward Bangs and Edward Bangs, Jr. He had three wives and elevenchildren including Lucy Merriam Green (1810-1993), Lydia Plympton Green (1824-1869) andAndrew Haswell Green (1820-1903). The material in this collection which deals with WilliamE. Green largely concerns his involvement in the Worcester Coal Company and the BlackstoneCanal Company.
The collection also features a large amount of material relating to the inheritance of the GreenHill Estate following Andrew HaswelTs death in 1903. The heirs of the estate were Andrew'sfive nieces and nephews: Lucy M. Green, William Ogden Green, Mary Pomeroy Green, SamuelMartin Green, and Nathan W. Green.
Finally the collection features materials relating to the eontroversial 1960s proposal to constructpart of 1-290 over part of the Green Hill Park.
