Worcester Academy Summer Programs offer a wide range of opportunities to meet all types and

levels of interests. Many of our programs are drawn from the school’s challenging, comprehensive

program of academics, athletics, and the arts, and feature seasoned and talented teachers and

coaches from the Worcester Academy faculty.

All of our summer program directors and staff are committed to creating an engaging,

constructive, and safe place for your child. Combine that with our camper-staff ratio of 8:1 and you

About the DirectorDani McAvoy teaches Computer Science and Mechanical Design in the Upper School and Math in the Middle School at Worcester Academy. She holds a B.A. from Bowdoin College in Computer Science and Mathematics Education. She runs a Scratch Programming Club in the Middle School. Ms. McAvoy coaches the Women’s Rugby Team at College of the Holy Cross.

About the Camp3D printing and design is a fast growing technology field. In this camp, campers will get to create 3D computer aided designs of common objects and pieces out of their imagination. The 3D designs created on the computer will then be printed on the 3D printer! From your head to a physical object in a short amount of time! Participants will work collaboratively to create and improve their designs by giving each other feedback on their work. They will learn the design process and will be able to interactively make changes and retest their designs. Campers will be provided computers and other hardware to use at camp. Campers of all levels will be challenged to create something appropriate for their age and ability level. Possible projects include creating containers, cars, board game pieces, artistic pieces, action figures and many more. Campers will be given flexibility in choosing the objects they will create. If final projects are not printed by the end of the week, they will be mailed home promptly upon their completion. After lunch each day, the campers will participate in different non-computer related activities.

Location Rader Hall is located on Worcester Academy’s main campus. Rader Hall provides access to classrooms with wireless internet, Smartboards and LCD projectors. Rader also houses the school’s library, which provides access to many different technologies and a new green screen room.

About the CampMultimedia Camp is a hands-on opportunity for students to gain better understanding of how society is influenced by media and technology. Participants will learn and discuss various forms of media including social networking, blogging, wikis, newscasts, advertisements and media sharing while also dabbling in programming. Using provided pocket cameras, digital cameras, laptops, a green screen and other tools and software, students will create a real world project that will include multimedia elements appropriate for the 21st century. Possible projects could include:

• Creating a television or radio advertisement using iMovie or GarageBand.

• Creating and participating in a newscast.• Creating an informational blog.• Using Photoshop to create visual advertisements.• Creating a website.• Creating and performing in a movie.• Creating a multimedia marketing campaign using

various elements of social media.Two weeks of fun and interactive learning will conclude with an opportunity for students to present their work and displaytheir innovation and creativity. New and returning campers will both find many challenges during the two-weeksession of camp.

About the DirectorPaul Himottu joined the Worcester Academy faculty in 2004. At Worcester Academy, Mr. Himottu has instructed students in a variety of math courses (Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Precalculus) as well as Physics. He has also been the advisor to the Robotics Club. Prior to beginning his teaching career, Mr. Himottu worked for several years for companies in the computer industry as a hardware engineer. Mr. Himottu holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and has completed graduate coursework in education.

About the CampRobotics Camp is an inquiry-based experience that encourages motivated students to explore the fundamental concepts of engineering through robotics. Students will be encouraged to work at their own pace both individually and in small groups to learn the basics of robotics prior to building and programming their own robot to perform a variety of increasingly challenging tasks such as:

• Selecting, picking up and carrying various objects• Navigating around obstacles and finding its way through a

maze• Playing music• Boogie-ing around the dance floor

In addition to participating in these and other fun hands-on projects, campers will have the opportunity to go on robotics related field trips, watch robotic movies, participate in recreational games and swim. Robotics Camp will culminate with a robotics symposium through which students can share the results of their work with friends and family. Worcester Academy Robotics Camp counselors all have a passion and enthusiasm for robotics.

About the DirectorDrew Tanzosh joined the Worcester Academy faculty in 2011 and has instructed students in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Prior to joining Worcester Academy, he taught at various New England independent schools. Mr. Tanzosh holds a master’s from George Washington University.

About the CampThe Worcester Academy Science camp is designed to excite, engage and motivate young people interested in science. The camp allows children to develop their own investigations of interesting scientific phenomena. Sample student investigations might include:

• What is the energy content in food? (Chemistry)• What factors influence feeding rate in Tetrahymena? (Biology)• What are the forces responsible for launching a water rocket?

(Physics)

Participants will pursue these and other exciting research questions in the newly renovated Kingsley Laboratory building. They will have fun developing and conducting experiments and will learn how science applies to their everyday lives. The students will also learn the fundamentals of experimental design. For example, they will learn how to state a testable hypothesis, collect, organize and graph data. They will recognize the importance of replication and the inclusion of a control group. They will understand the importance of effectively communicating their results. The camp will conclude with a scientific symposium where students will share their findings with family and friends.

About the CampCampers will spend the week creating video games using the Scratch programming language. Campers can try and recreate games that they have played for years or try to invent one of their own. The atmosphere of camp will be one of collaboration where students will collaborate on projects and provide each other with feedback and suggestions for improving their creations. Any prior knowledge of video games will provide a basis for discussions about what makes games interesting and fun to play, we will use this information as part of their design process. Campers will be provided computers and other hardware to use at camp. Campers of all levels will be challenged to create something appropriate for their age and ability level. At the end of camp there will be a game expo to show off student creations. After lunch each day, the campers will participate in a variety of activities not related to computers.

About the Director

Christina Duff joined the Worcester Academy Faculty in 2005. At WA, Ms. Duff teaches Intro Studio Art, Ceramics, Architecture, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Jewelry Design, and runs the after school Art program. She holds a B.S. in Studio Art and Art History.

About the Camp

Spend a week immersed in the visual arts! Campers will work in various creative areas including painting, drawing, 2D design, sewing, clay, sculpture, jewelry making, and mixed media. Some examples of activities include, paint your own pottery, drawing and painting outside, making recycled plastic bags, and making polymer clay beads.

About the Camp

Worcester Academy Performing Arts (WASA) interweaves theatre, music and art in a performing arts program for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Each two-week session concludes with performances of original musical plays, the focal point of our arts classes. Our revolving repertoire of 15 shows allows us to present different plays each session. Campers develop skills in major elements of musical theater: acting, movement, singing, instrumental music and scenery/props. Each session is limited to 45 campers, divided by age into three groups. Expert faculty work with counselors to address the individual needs of our campers. All campers are involved in two plays, in one as an actor/ singer/scenic artist, and in a second as an instrumentalist in the pit band. Our approach gives campers experience in all aspects of the productions, letting them develop their strengths and explore new directions.

About the DirectorDonald Irving has taught at Worcester Academy since 1985. As director of the upper school choral program he guides students in chorus, advanced chorus, and our select ensemble, the Academy Singers, maintaining close contact through classes, rehearsals, and individual lessons. He is the music director of Worcester Academy’s annual musical and has written many of the musicals performed at WASA each summer.

ActingCampers develop skills through participation in theater games and the rehearsal of a short musical show. Each group performs at the end of each session.

Vocal MusicParticipants learn basics of singing and practice original songs for the shows.

Instrumental Music/Pit Band * Beginners: Children who do not play an instrument or have less experience learn their choice of recorder or violin.* Intermediate/Advanced: Children may play an instrument on which they have developed skills. By audition.* Everyone plays in a band for another group’s show. Please note: Keyboard (piano) is limited to advanced students.

About the Director

About the Camp

Spend two weeks in the studio sculpting clay and learning to throw on the potters wheel! Students will learn fundamental hand-building techniques, surface treatments, and glazing effects. On the wheel, students will create thrown plates, cups, bowls, and vases. Projects will be created from porcelain, red, and polymer clay. No clay experience needed.

Ed has over 20 years experience as a camp director and clinician and was recently inducted into the NE Basketball Hall of Fame.

About the Camp

The Worcester Academy “Hoopin’ on the Hill” Co-ed Basketball Camp is geared for skill development. Campers are given daily instruction on the finer points of fundamental basketball, in a positive environment. Camp fits the needs of all ages and all levels of play. Camp begins with Monday registration at 9 am at The Worcester Academy Gymnasium. Camp begins daily at 9 am. Campers bring their own lunches. Pickup is at 3:30 pm; Friday pickup is at 12:30pm (after our awards ceremony).

About the DirectorTony Johnson, Head Varsity Football Coach at Worcester Academy, has over 24 years of coaching experience at both the college and high school levels. Tony coached for 17 years at Bishop Guertin High School where he won 6 state championship titles and was a finalist in 11 championship games. He has coached at the collegiate level at University of New Hampshire, St. Anselm’s College and Plymouth State College. Tony is a 1982 graduate of the University of Rhode Island.

About the Camp

Players are expected to bring a helmet and shoulder pads from their respective schools, as well as shorts, T-shirts, bathing suit, cleats, sneakers, lunch, towel & water bottle.

About the DirectorJames Proctor serves as camp director and is also the Varsity Boys Head Soccer Coach at Worcester Academy. James just finished his 14th year at the helm of the Worcester Academy boys soccer program—compiling a 157-55-37 record, which includes one final, four New England Prep semi-finals and nine New England Prep quarter-final appearances. James currently holds a United States Soccer Federation “B” coaching license. In 2007 James was the NSCAA Mass Prep School Boys Soccer Coach of the year. Before moving into full-time coaching, James was a professional soccer player for 13 years and played in both England and the United States.

About the Camp

The Worcester Academy co-ed soccer camp is a fun and challenging program that caters to all levels and abilities. The outcome is a positive week where all campers can improve and work on their tactical & technical abilities and enjoy trying to implement them during our daily matches at the camp.

About the CampThe Worcester Academy Sports Camp takes great pride in providing instruction and play in all sports, while not specializing in any one. With a tradition of more than 55 years, the program allows girls and boys ages 6 to 14 to develop their interests and skills in many different areas. Each two-week program features swimming, arts & crafts, sports films, Olympic day and special sports clinics. Regular instruction includes football, basketball, baseball, track, soccer, softball, floor hockey and other sports-related activities.

SwimmingInstructional swimming is provided daily. Each camper is evaluated at the end of a two-week session and is awarded a certificate of achievement. The swimming program is carried on rain or shine in the F. Harold Daniels Gymnasium indoor pool. Every aspect of safety is considered in the swimming program, which is one of the most important skills taught at our camp.

Arts and CraftsThe craft program is organized to give campers an opportunity to do some creative work with their hands in various arts and crafts.

Jim Bergenholtz is well known in the Greater Worcester County area. The former head basketball coach at Grafton High School, Jim has spent nearly three decades as a coach, administrator, and as the Program Director for the Worcester Academy Sports Camp. One of the leading football officials in the Northeast, Jim brings a wealth of sports experience to our camp program and continues to provide inspiration and direction to campers and counselors alike.

Hours Monday – Friday: 9 am – 3:30 pm. An hour and a half is set aside each day for lunch and movies. Extended-day offered: 7:30 am – 9 am & 3:30 pm – 5 pm (additional fee)

HealthAll care and precaution will be given to ensure the safety of each camper. A physical examination by a family physician is required and must be on file prior to participation in camp activities. Athletic trainers are available during the camp day in case of injury.

Uniform and Equipment

Campers are required to wear the official Worcester Academy sports camp uniform, consisting of a T-shirt and crimson shorts, which can be purchased the first day of each session in the gymnasium store. Campers supply their own sneakers, glove and swimsuits. On cool days campers may wear jeans or long pants. The camp supplies towels daily at no extra cost.

Food ServicesCampers bring their own lunch (nut free) in a suitable container. Sports drinks may be purchased from a machine on campus.

FacilitiesGaskill Field and the main campus provide 11-plus acres of athletic fields for all sports. Outdoor activities are carried out on both our campus green, as well as the school’s athletic fields. The F. Harold Daniels Gymnasium provides excellent space for swimming, basketball, wrestling, volleyball and indoor track. Indoor facilities make it possible to carry on a full program regardless of weather conditions.

Anna Clifford has been playing volleyball for ten years. She was MVP of the Worcester Academy team her junior and senior years. She served as team captain her senior year and went on to play at Colby College. She has coached at various camps and clinics, including the Worcester Academy Volleyball Camp, College Volleyball Recruiting Camp, and National Women in Sports Day training sessions. She still plays volleyball in local beach leagues and at regional adult tournaments through Yankee.

About the CampVolleyball Camp is designed to benefit every camper with a hands-on approach. During the week we will focus on the individual and team aspects of the game with a series of skill and practice activities. The camp ends with a team tournament on Friday.

DISCOUNTS Any child enrolled in one WA summer camp program at full price will receive a 5% discount on all equal or lower priced additional programs. The Multi-Program discount will be applied for each additional program after the first program for each individual. For example, if child one signs up for three programs they will get a multi-program discount off of program two and three (lower priced). Siblings of campers already enrolled in a WA summer camp at full price will receive a 5% discount on one equal or lower priced programs. To receive our discount, applications must be submitted online or mailed together with brother/sister relationships indicated on the enrollment form. Siblings do not need to attend the same camp or same session to receive the discount. Discount applies to tuition portion only, not to the pre- and post- camp programs. Families can use both the sibling discount & multiple session discount. Cousins, nieces, nephews, or friends are ineligible for the sibling & family discount.

Registration can either be online, mail-in or walk-in.Make checks payable to WORCESTER ACADEMY and mail to: Summer Program WORCESTER ACADEMY 81 Providence Street Worcester, MA 01604 or hand deliver to the Business office in Walker Hall or to the Athletic office in Daniels gym.

A non-refundable $100 deposit per camper per program is due when registering.

Balances are due one week prior to starting first camp.

All forms must be completed and signed in order to be processed.

All programs require a health form; either the form on page 20 or an equivalent from the camper’s doctor is acceptable.

Order of processing will be determined by the date the mail is delivered to our directors. We cannot accept responsibility for mail which has been lost or delayed by the post office.

NOTIFICATIONNotice of acceptance will be emailed or mailed within 10 days of receiving application.

CANCELLATION / REFUND PROCEDURE A refund of any fees less the initial non-refundable deposit per program will be made if the participant requests a refund in writing to the camp director 7 days prior to the first day of camp. After camp starts, no refunds will be issued.

FROM MASS. TURNPIKE WEST BOUND

Take Exit 10A off the Mass. Turnpike. Follow Rte. 146 North towards Worcester and continue a little more than one mile to the second exit - Exit 12- Route 122A North. At the end of the exit take a left. Then take a right at the light following signs for Rte. 122A/Vernon Hill onto Providence Street. Continue straight up Providence Street for about 1 1/4 miles, passing through both a stoplight and a stop sign. The Academy is on your right.

FROM MASS. TURNPIKE EAST BOUND

Take Exit 10 off the Mass. Turnpike. Follow Rte. I-290 East towards Worcester to exit - Exit 13 - After taking exit 13. At the end of the exit traffic light turn right onto Route 122A South. After a few 100 yards make a left turn onto Pattison Street (second street). At the top of Pattison Street turn onto Providence Street. The Academy is immediately on your right.
