Dear parents and members of our school community Welcome to the end of week 6. I cant believe the last two weeks has gone by so quickly. This week we hosted the 50th anniversary of the Malynley Shield. In 1968 the Orange High School University Shield team reached the Grand Final, and drew with Tamworth. Under the rules of the competition, the match was replayed at Gosford, and again the result was a draw. Orange players were billeted by Gosford High School students, and during informal discussion after the game, it was suggested that an inter-school visit between the two schools would be a beneficial adjustment to the sporting calendars of both teams. As a result, the sportsmasters organised a program of events of a sporting and cultural nature, and in the following year, approximately two hundred Gosford students visited Orange. The inaugural competition was a great success, and it was decided that the visit be an annual one. The Malynley Shield was donated by a Mr & Mrs A Dews, whose interest in the competition was stimulated by the fact that their three children attended either Gosford or Orange High Schools. “Malynley” is an acronym for members of their family. The MALYNLEY SHIELD is awarded for the overall points score during the visit. All contests are included in the points score, and are of equal value (win-2, draw-1, loss-0). This competition is one of the longest standing interschool partnerships in the state and the fact that we still use billeting for our students is an extra special touch. At writing this fortnight’s newsletter we have just welcomed our Gosford friends. Stay tuned for the all of the results and full wrap up of the 50th year of Malynley in the next edition of the newsletter and through our social media platforms. Caden Keed Last week Caden represented NSW in the NSW All Schools Softball Team at the School Sport Australia 17 Years & Under Softball Championships. NSW were unfortunately beaten in the grand final by QLD 2-1. Caden was selected in the Australian All Schools Merit Team!. Well done Caden! Under 14’s Rugby League Congratulations to the OHS Under 14s Rugby League team who were crowned Western Region Champions for 2019. The boys demolished Kelso High 42 to 10 in the Semi final, before taking care of Bathurst High 20 to 6 in the final. The lads now progress to the states final 20 where they will face a champion from another region. Looking forward to the next challenge in a few weeks time. Well done boys! Liam Wilson and Mitch Watts Congratulations to the following boys who have had a successful hockey representation with the Western team. Liam Wilson has been named in the NSW CHS team, with Mitch Watts named as a shadow. State Dance Ensemble Congratulations goes to the following students who have been accepted into the State Dance Ensemble via an audition process. This is a great achievement as they went up against other students from around the state to receive their place. What an amazing opportunity and we wish them the best of luck in their rehearsals and performances. Ellie Spencer, Paris Robinson, Eloise Middleton, Rose Thoms, Courtney Rapley and Jorjia Robinson (reserve list). NSW Regional Technology Expo In Week 3, a group of OHS students from years 8, 10, 11 & 12 attended the NSW Regional Technology Expo 2019. During their visit, students participated in interactive workshops on a range of topics including robotics, the future of agricultural technology, medical uses of technology and also had a chance to experience a small scale Smart City model in action.
Students collaborated with peers from a range of schools in the region and were involved in a master class on entrepreneurship. This involved a pitch to demonstrate the most creative and innovative solution to a current sustainability issue facing the central west region. OHS students were selected by a panel of judges as the winning teams for these challenges. Liam Leahy won the junior challenge, and Cameron Elms and Jock Elliot were selected as the winning pitch for the senior cohort. Well done OHS students on your entrepreneurship skills! CHS Soccer Congratulations to Jordan Bruce who made the CHS 2 team and was named country player of the tournament. Mitch Cooper also made the shadow squad. The Orange High community is very proud of your wonderful achievements boys! Under 15’s CHS Netball Congratulations to the OHS U/15s CHS netball team who have come a respectable 6th place in the final 16’s knockout. The girls have had an enjoyable two days playing some hard fought netball. Thanks to the parents for their support and massive shout out to Lily Escreet who represented OHS as our umpire. Well done Clare, Lucy, Megan, Izzy, Bella, Asha, Caitlin, Hailey, Tessa and Georgia Harriet Shuttleworth Congratulations to Harriet Shuttleworth who has been selected to represent Football NSW as the under 15’s Goal Keeper in a touring party to France as part of the Women’s World Cup. Harriet will be flying out this Friday for 2 weeks and will be playing 4 games against French teams along with seeing all 4 of the Matilda’s pool games. Good luck Harriet! Dancing with the Stars On Saturday evening last week, I was so fortunate to be able to attend the 2019 Orange Dancing with the Stars Cancer Council fundraiser at the Orange Function Centre. Along with over 800 others, I witnessed the raw talent of 10 dancing performances including our very own staff from OHS. We were the first school to be involved in the program since its inception and I am so proud of our staff for putting themselves in a position where they were challenged every step of the way. To have staff role modelling to our students about challenge and perseverance is extremely important and I am sure you would agree that we did our school and the Orange community proud on Friday night. School Spectacular 2019 Congratulations to our Combined Choir who have been selected to participate in the School Spectacular this year. I hope you all have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in week 8 as we enter into Astley Cup week. With my warmest regards Chad Bliss Principal
This week Ms Kharitos visited Orange Public School to present our Digital Transition students with their certificates of completion. Each student who participated demonstrated a high level of digital knowledge and application after completing the program. Well done to all of the OPS students involved!
Congratulations to the OHS Under 14s Rugby League team who were crowned Western Region Champions for 2019. Well done boys!
At the end of last Term Ms Coates' Visual Arts Year 9 and Year 11 Elective Visual Arts Classes visited the Orange Regional Gallery to see the Archibald Prize Exhibition. We were fortunate to listen to a talk on the works by Orange Regional Gallery's Public Engagement and Education officer Cecilie Knowles. The exhibition allowed the students to become immersed in a variety of portrait styles and to view works by Australian artists with outstanding technical skills. This will help to inspire the students in the Portraiture Unit later in the year.
Mel Campbell has been nominated as a finalist in the Australian Education Awards in the category of “Teacher of the Year”.
This is amazing recognition for one of our hard working Agriculture staff.
Ms Campbell will attend a gala event held on Sydney on 16th August along with representatives from Orange High School.
No matter the result, we are very proud that Ms Campbell is teaching your children and has been recognised as one of three finalists in NSW for Teacher of the Year.
Orange High School values the safety of the student body, staff and visitors to the school. As such we have implemented a new electronic sign in procedure.
When you arrive at the school enter your name, phone number and who you are seeing – it will take a photo of you and print out a name tag. This tag must be displayed whilst at the school.
When your meeting is finished – just put your tag under the bar code reader and it will sign you out.
Any questions please email the business manager [email protected]
As a parent or carer, do you have concerns about your children's safety on social media? The Safe on Social Media face-to-face presentation is an opportunity to hear information presented by Kirra Pendergast, an engaging presenter who discusses the implications of social media use including cyberbullying as well as privacy settings, posting photos, identify theft, managing digital footprints and gaming dangers.
The presentation is on Thursday 13th June at 6.30pm in the OHS library. The presentation follows on from the Year 7, 8 and 9 Safe on Social Media presentations at school on the same day. Any questions relating to the presentation can be directed to Mrs Nash. (HT Wellbeing)
