Woodstock Elementary Newsletter April 2015 Principal Points: Things are looking UP at Woodstock. The next time you come to the school, please LOOK UP at the beautiful mobiles that your children created for all of us to enjoy for years to come. PTA sponsored this art project and the students love looking up and identifying their particular art piece. This project took several months to complete and the students loved every minute of it! This was quite the process and every student made a contribution. Thank you PTA! A special thanks to Sariah Henry for scheduling our students for the Woodstock Garden again this year. The garden is located at the Presbyterian Church just down from our school on Vine Street. The students enjoy the walking field trips and watching their plants grow and produce food and flowers. The goats and chickens are an added student visitor’s delight. Once again our PTA parents were busy bees with the Woodstock Read- A-Thon this year. They were buzzing about creating fun activities during lunch and of course, supporting our students in reading, reading, and more reading all week long. It was all topped off by a Pancake Breakfast for everyone and the anticipation of something awful happening to the principal (AKA me) during the awards assembly. And of course, it was all sweetened up by a little honey and honeycombs dumped on the principal by Read-A- Thon top readers at Woodstock. Thank you parents for your support of the fabulous PTA fundraiser! Principal Yvonne Pearson PTA President’s Message: April is Earth Month.  Woodstock Read-a-thon Results:

Reading is un-BEE-lievable…

And our students are truly un-BEE-lievable! Our kids read for 8,099 hours during our read-a-thon week! That is amazing! We smashed our reading goal by over 2,000 hours. We have also raised $11,754.81 so far. There are still donations trickling in, so if you have a sponsor who still wants to donate, please send in the money or have them donate online.

With the money raised, we are funding next year’s PTA activities and also buying hand-held white boards that the teachers have been wanting for the students and some awesome new P.E. equipment that will be here shortly! We are also purchasing folding tables that the school uses often for things like science fair, 3rd grade wax museum, parent teacher conferences, displays of classroom projects, Grandparent’s Day, Book Fair; the list goes on and on! It is difficult to get the tables ordered from the district, so now we’ll have our very own! Thank you for your generous donations to our school!

The school-wide read-a-thon prize is on May 28th. We are walking to Get Air Salt Lake trampoline park for some jumping fun. Every student must have 2 signed waivers in order to attend. The online waiver must be filled out at getairsaltlake.com. If this waiver is not filled out, your child will not be attending the field trip. The second field trip waiver is one that is required by the Granite

School District. That waiver must also be filled out to attend and is attached to the newsletter email.

Students who do not have both waivers signed will stay at the school and watch a movie while their class is gone. If you would prefer NOT to have your child attend this field trip, they will watch the movie at the school while their class is on the field trip.

We need LOTS of parent volunteers to walk to and from Get Air, supervise the kids while at the park and to just have FUN, FUN, FUN with our kids! Please email [email protected] to get signed up, or contact your child’s teacher directly.

A huge thank you to the PTA parents who volunteered so much time during our read-a-thon week. They counted thousands of reading minutes, counted thousands of dollars – three times no less to ensure accuracy, and helped the lunch time activities run smoothly! A special thanks to Scot Woodland and our Woodstock dads who flipped a thousand pancakes, and our co-chairs Robyn Ivins and Carolyn Linthorst.

Reading is un-BEE-lievable!!!

Also in April, some of our classes will be honoring Earth day ("Earth Week!") later this month by doing art and writing projects that demonstrate how our Woodstock students see themselves and their families doing their own small but important part of caring for the planet. There are many ways that we all do, and can do, our part... and we are excited to see what the students come up with!

On Tuesday April 21st at 2pm we'll have an Earth Day assembly with special guest Carrie Cottonwood! (An 8-foot tall Fremont Cottonwood tree mascot). Carrie will introduce our students to trees in a fun and engaging way.

 Meet the Masters:

In April the students will be introduced to the artist Alexander Calder. His abstract mobiles can be seen around the world. This American artist created imaginative mobiles, stables, and sculptures combining interesting shapes, colors, and motion. The students will get to design and assemble their own mobiles and stabiles in Calder’s style. Thanks to the following parents for helping us out this month: Amber Johnson (3 classes!!!), Amanda Radford, Tiffy Conk (2 classes!!!), Christy Van Orman, Sariah Henry (2 classes!!!), Carolyn Linthorst (2 classes!!!), Rivka Richman (2classes!!!), Kristin Davis, and Jill Kinder.

We are adding in an artist for the month of May! The following classes DO NOT have parent helpers and will miss out on the art project in May:

• Johnson AM • Johnson PM • Petersen • Crockett • Wilson • Spransy

Please contact Christine Christiansen ([email protected] or 801-975-7194) if you can help with the art project in May for one of the above classes!

 Maturation Program:

Due to a scheduling conflict we have had to move the Maturation Program to Tuesday, April 28th for all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade girls and all 5th and 6th grade boys. Boys and girls will be instructed separately (girls in the gym and boys in the large group room upstairs).

If possible, parents are encouraged to attend with their children. A permission slip will be sent home with your child about a week before the program.

Prior to the start of the girls Maturation Program, the 4-6th grade girls will come down to the gym at 1:30 for a 15 min. presentation about Girls on the Run, an after school running program, by Shelly Snow Program Director for Girls on the Run Utah. For more info go to www.girlsontherunutah.org.

A Reminder from our Treasurer:

The end of the school year is right around the corner. Please make sure that you turn in your receipts for PTA activities soon. If this is new to you, here are the instructions: Go into the office and then walk down the hall that goes past Ms. Pearson's office. (This is a grown up only hall, so if you have kids with you, please ask them to sit in the office while you create your check request) As you turn the corner, there will be individual cubbies on the right. The PTA cubby is on the far left.

In the cubby, there is a folder with check reimbursement forms. There is also a basket with pens, a calculator, and a stapler. Fill out the check request, staple on the receipt(s) and place your request in the left side of the folder. I try to check the folder regularly, but if you need your check quickly please call or text me at 385-393-0929. Thank you! Marci Olson, Woodstock PTA Treasurer
