From the Desk of Mrs. Matz

WOW! It is hard to believe that December is upon us! In the hus-

tle and bustle of this holiday season, we often seem to get so busy that

we lose sight of what is most important to us— all of the special people

in our lives. So, I would like to take this moment to thank each and every

one of you for the privilege of spending my days with each of your chil-

dren; they are truly blessings!

As we enter the winter season, I would just like to remind every-one that we try to get the students outside for recess whenever possible.

That being said, please dress them accordingly and send them with

proper outerwear (scarves, gloves, hats).

This is a busy time of year, and the staff at Fostoria Intermediate

School hopes that you and your family spend quality time together en-

joying each other‘s company. We also would like to wish you a happy

Holiday Season and a healthy New Year! We look forward to seeing eve-

ryone January 6, 2014!

Project MORE is a one-on-one reading intervention program for students

at FIES. Students who are reading near grade level are tutored four time

a week for thirty minutes at their reading level. Currently, 78 students

are tutored by over 100 volunteers. Volunteers are 4th -12th grade stu-

dents, parents, grandparents, staff members, retired teachers, and com-

munity members. We are always looking for adults who are willing to tu-

tor a student once a week for thirty minutes. If you are interested, please

contact Mrs. Berrier at 419-436-4125 or [email protected]

PROJECT MORE

Get Involved in Kids’ Online Activities

It is wise to take an active role in protecting your kids from Internet predators

and explicit materials online.

To do that:

Become computer literate and learn how to block objectionable material.

Keep the computer in a common area, not in individual bedrooms, where

you can watch and monitor its use.

Share an email account with your child so you can monitor messages.

Bookmark kids’ favorite sites for easy access.

Spend time online together to teach your kids appropriate online behavior.

Forbid your child from entering private chat rooms; block them with safety

features provided by your Internet service provider or with special fil-

tering software. Be aware that posting messages to chat rooms reveals

a user’s email address to others.

Monitor your credit card and phone bills for unfamiliar account charges.

Find out what, if any, online protection is offered by your child’s school,after-school center, friends’ homes, or anyplace where kids could use a

computer without your supervision.

Take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable online ex-

change.

Forward copies of obscene or threatening messages you or your kids get to

your Internet service provider.

As always everyone’s priority is to keep our kids safe at school and at home.

Have a great Thanksgiving! Mr. Renz

STEM NEWS

November is an exciting

month for STEM Club as

the 3rd and 4th graders will

be constructing ‘Pasta

Bridges’ and the 5th and

6th graders will be con-

structing Pastamobiles’.

The students will then get

to follow up with defining

how strong their bridges

are as well as racing the

pastamobiles next month.

Other exciting news for

STEM is that the Wednes-

day Retail Shop has new

materials such as me-

chanical pencils and

book covers. The retail

shop also offers other

school supplies that stu-

dents may be running low

on at this time of year and

is cheaper then heading

to the store.

Last week during Sci-Fi Fri-

day the students tested

surface tension on pen-

nies. This week the stu-

dents will get to find out

what happens when they

put water, toothpicks and

wax paper together in a

special pattern!

 Grade Christmas Program

The 3rd Grade Music classes in the Intermediate Building willpresent their annual Christmas Program “THE HAPPIEST OFHOLIDAYS” on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 7:00 PM inthe Performing Arts Center in the Jr/Sr High School Building.

Poor Rudolph, he is not having the happiest of holidays as hehas just realized that in the poem “The Night Before Christ-mas” there were eight tiny reindeer. All along he thoughtthere were nine reindeer and he was the most famous reindeerof all. He watches as the Mother tries to get the boys and girls to sleep on Christmas Eve only to see thatthey do not have going to bed on the agenda. Santa arrives in time to help Rudolph understand that heis important and that children should be asleep on Christmas Eve.

Elijah Silva is Rudolph, the 9th reindeer, with Drake Ritter as Santa Claus. The Mother is Princesa Villanueva and the Child is Adalynn Duquette. Mkylhy Hunker and Jesse Little will sing a duet about“The 25th Day of December” and Patrick Porter will sing about losing his two front teeth.  Plan to join the 3rd Graders on Tuesday, December 10th at 7:00 PM to enjoy the great songs of the sea-

Last month ’ s character education topic was citizenship. Fourth and

fifth grade students committed to doing one or two things in order to show good citizenship, and

some of those commitments included completing homework and turning it in on time, picking up

trash, helping other students, and following rules at home and at school. Sixth grade students cre-

ated laws and consequences, and they discussed how a leader is elected and how they will handle

bullying in each of the following lands: Candy Land, Computer Land, Magic Kingdom, Never Never

Land, Toy Land, and Tropical Paradise. Students also had the opportunity to vote for their favorite

land.

December ’ s character education topic is cooperation, and we will focus on teamwork and

compromise.

Friendship/Social Skills (4th grade), Grief and Loss (5 th grade), and Anger Management (6th

grade) groups will be finishing up during the beginning of December. Another set of small group

sessions will begin in January. In the next few weeks, permission slips will be sent home to 4th

grade students that expressed an interest in participating in a Grief and Loss Group, and to 5 th and

6th grade students that expressed an interest in participating in a Friendship/Social Skills Group.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by

phone at 419-436-4125 ext. 3226 or by email at [email protected]

Happy Holidays!

Bethany Zambori-Sanford, Guidance Counselor

For the month of November, your child has been discussing what being a good citizen is in

our character lessons. We want them to understand that there are many levels of citizenship from

the school to the world, but that the ways we identify a good citizen are similar in every situation.

The focus in the third grade classrooms was showing the students how all the character words we

discuss throughout the year are blended together. The previous months, we discussed Responsibil-

ity and Respect in the classrooms. For this month, we discussed how being a good citizen possesses

both Respect and Responsible characteristics.

During our lesson this month, we further explored the steps to resolving conflicts with

others while remaining respectful and responsible in those situations. Each student was encour-

aged to think of a current problem situation of his/her own and begin to brainstorm possible solu-

tions to solving the conflict. Throughout this discussion, it was encouraged to take out the feel-ing of “anger” to have a more clear and focused mind to think of solutions. The students came up

with some fun and creative solutions to solve those everyday conflicts with peers that involve: go-

ing first, what game to play, someone cutting in line, what tv show to watch, etc. Ask your child

what solutions he/she came up with during this lesson. The best way to show our children how to

solve conflicts is through talking and modeling ourselves.

Happy Thanksgiving!

FROM THE LITERACY SPECIALIST

While looking for information to share in this month’s newsletter, I discovered an article about

how iPads and iPhones are at the top of children’s wish lists this holiday season. This doesn’t

completely shock me since my two year old is fascinated with technology and has discovered

functions on my phone and iPad that were previously unknown to me. In the spirit of kids and

technology I’d like to share some apps that will be both fun and helpful.

7

Apps Gone Free-This app offers daily freebies on apps that typically

cost. Apps are often available for several days. The typical cost will

be crossed out to show it’s free. If it’s no longer available it will say

“expired”. It can be found by searching “apps gone free” within the

App Store.

Everyday Math has a variety of apps for their math games. These

apps typically cost $1.99, but in the past they have been found

on Apps Gone Free. They can be found by searching “Everyday

Math”.

Reading Wonders, our new reading series, also has a variety

of apps for their grammar games. The “lite” versions are free,

but there is a charge for the full versions. They can be found

by searching “Reading Wonders”.

There are many free addition, subtraction, multiplication,

and division apps. This one was found by searching

“multiplication”.

This is a free sentence-building app. There are three levels in which

students are timed and can earn stickers for correct answers.

Happy Gaming!
