COURSE EVALUATIONS
Member feedback helps to improve the courses and instructors selected in the future. While all chapters gained valuable ideas from the evaluations distributed this past spring semester, in a new “go green” effort, Gail Acree and Bob Blumbeg of the Lagniappe Studies Unlimited Chapter designed an online evaluation form for their chapter’s use. Sixty percent (206) of the returned evaluations were completed online; 40% (136) used the printed version. A total of 342 evaluations were received from the 756 course registrations for a 45.2% return. Summarized together, these evaluations presented many great ideas and suggestions. Overall, some interesting findings are:
Question Excellent Good Overall rating of the instructor 92% 6%
Overall rating of course content 87% 11%
Goals/objectives were achieved 83% 13%
Would you recommend to others? Yes No 98% 2%
Level of course presentation: Too About Advanced Right 4% 96%
* Percentages do not total 100% because only excellent and good
responses are displayed.

Mosaics
Discover the world of mosaics. No experience is necessary. You don’t have to be the “crafty” type to take this course. Learn to structure a picture or design from small pieces of glass using tile nippers provided by instructor (avail-able to check in/out for home use). Using mosaic tech-niques, make two to three projects. New students create one mandatory basic project and can choose a second or third from: an 8” x 8” stepping stone, an 8” x 8” tile, 6” x 12” tile, or a 7” diameter terracotta saucer. On the last day, you will grout, seal, and in some cases, paint your project(s). Some work may be required outside of class.

Text and Contexts: Literature of the Great War
This summer, we will examine the poetry, and some bits of prose, of the Great War era. We will place this in context of the Great War itself (1914-1921), when the old Victo-rian era of peace, safety, prosperity, and increasing social fairness came to an agonizing end. The poets and novel-ists were the first to recognize that the world had ended, and were also the first to understand that the new era be-yond it would be tragic and dispiriting. As usual, the “Ann and Jim Show” will deal with serious topics in a cheerful and jaunty manner. “There will be stuff.”

Women and Minorities in the Media
The mass media is one among many social institutions, such as family, religion, and education, that strongly influence our everyday notions of race and gender. We will critically examine the role of the media in shaping, enabling, facilitating, or challenging the social constructs of race and gender in our society. We will address a variety of entertainment and news content in print and electronic media. The course will also address the experi-ence of minority groups in the United States: African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and La-tinos. We will discuss social construction of femininity as well as masculinity. Since the mass media constitute only one social institution among others, we will be drawing on research and theories from other disciplines–history, women’s studies, sociology, literary studies, and cultural studies–to discuss the impact of the media on our con-cept of race and gender identities.

Clementine Hunter, a native Louisianan, was an impor-tant twentieth century American folk artist. She started painting in her unique self-taught style in the late 1930s, and by the time of her death on January 1, 1988, she was a major figure in the genre of folk art. The theme of her paintings was life on a rural plantation, depicting scenes of work, play and religion of the local people. The Continuing Influence of Le Droit Civil Français on Louisiana Civil Law
Nearly everyone knows that “Louisiana law” has been influenced by “French law,” but what parts of Louisiana law have felt that influence? What is the nature of that influence: has it been full-blown derivation, merely in-spiration, or something in between? We will travel back in time, tracing the French law influences on a variety of contemporary Louisiana legal institutions: forced heir-ship (law of inheritance), matrimonial regimes (law of marriage), and usufruct (law of property). Readings in-clude a number of original French language legal materi-als (with English translations), including excerpts from the Custom of Paris, the Code Napoléon, and the works of great French legal scholars Robert Joseph Pothier and Charles Bonaventure Marie Toullier.

Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment
In Crime and Punishment, a man commits a terrible crime and uses reason to justify his actions. But is there a limit to reason? Can his deed really go unaccounted for? These are some of the questions Fyodor Dostoevsky raises in this great 19th century novel. The work is at once a psychological portrait of a depraved individual, a sus-penseful detective story, and a momentous exploration of philosophical theory. Study the work both as literature and as a reflection of some of the philosophical conflicts of that time—and perhaps of ours. Read pages 1–150
(parts 1 and 2) before the course begins.

Two Literary Views of Louisiana Cajun Life
Tim Gautreaux, a contemporary Louisiana author, and Kate Chopin, a nineteenth-century Louisiana writer, created stories that reflect both regional Cajun life and universal human dilemmas. Growing up in South Louisi-ana, Gautreaux witnessed Cajun life daily. Although Kate Chopin spent her youth in Missouri, much of her adult life was spent in New Orleans and Cloutierville. Both authors capture the essence of the happiness and pain of life as they treat the reader to unique perspectives of Cajun life. Gautreaux and Chopin lived among the Cajuns when there was little national or even statewide recog-nition of this unassimilated group of people maintaining a unique lifestyle in Louisiana. That lifestyle is beauti-fully, sensitively, and humorously captured by these two
gifted artists.

About the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU (OLLI at LSU) was established in 2007 as a membership-based
community of mature adults who love learning and enjoy spending time with like-minded individuals. At
present there are three chapters: Lagniappe Studies Unlimited Chapter in Baton Rouge, Felicianas Chapter
in St. Francisville, and St. James Place Chapter in Baton Rouge. Our mission is to foster lifelong learning
and individual growth for learners ages 50 and over by creating intellectually stimulating learning oppor-
tunities that enrich their lives. We welcome anyone that is interested in becoming a member. Membership
is $40 per year and entitles a member to enroll in as many courses as he/she desires throughout the year.

Refund PolicyIf your plans change, please let us know five business days prior to the course start date and we will begin the refund pro-cess. If you attend first meeting of the course and decide you would like to discontinue the course, an OLLI credit for the full amount will be given if you send a written request that is received in the OLLI at LSU office before the second course meeting. If you wish to transfer into another course, please call the OLLI at LSU office at 225-578-6763. If a course is canceled by LSU, a credit for the full amount will be made to your OLLI at LSU account.
If you paid for a course that is canceled using a credit card, a full refund can be credited to your credit card account within five working days if you request us to do so. If you paid using a check, a full refund can take up to 8 weeks before you receive your full refund after you request us to do so. (LSU’s policy on a check refund requires a 30-day delay to ensure the check has been deposited by the bank. At that point your name will be submitted as an applicant for a University ID number as the University no longer uses social security numbers for auditing purposes. Once your ID number is received by the Continuing Education office, the refund request will be processed.)
Cancellation PolicyAll courses with fewer than 9 participants will be canceled before the course begins. If you are interested in a course, it is very important that you register as early as possible. LSU reserves the right to cancel or make changes in courses under these conditions.
