Woman’s Club of arroyo Grande bulleTIn fun, friends and Community Service
February 2017
FEBRUARY LUNCHEON Friday, February 10th @ noon (note: date is incorrect in yearbook)
Co-chairs Judi Boudreau and Patti Roberts have asked that WCAG ladies wear “valentines” colors in accordance with their Valentine's Day theme. We will be honoring our past presidents & be entertained by Suzy Anderson and her Woman's Club Theatre Group, who are bringing back the Golden Girls for the enjoyment of all. Be prepared to laugh!
Please send your $14 to Ellen Bavaro by Monday, February 6th, to let her know you will be there. Just a reminder, if you RSVP but cannot attend, you are still obligated to pay if you do not cancel before that date as we have to pay for your meal.
YES! I’ll be attending the luncheon
on February 10!

Send your $14 to Ellen Bavaro at

also can call 473-2834 or email Ellen at

member, even if you are not eating the
meal, we still need your name for the
seat count!

WCAG FOOD
DONATION
January 2017 Co-chairs Chris
Finney and Melody Alcala report
that 95 cans of soup plus 10 other
food items were donated to the
Salvation Army in Arroyo Grande
(next to Kmart) as a result of our
can collection at the January soup
luncheon. The staff at the Salva-
tion Army thanks us for our gener-
ous donation. It was heartwarming
to know that members of our local
community can receive food as well
as fresh produce there.
Message from the President:
February is the month to honor our Past Presidents. Suzy Anderson will have her “Golden
Girls” embarking on a new and hilarious adventure to share with us. Our January
program was so inspiring! We heard about the A.V.I.D. Program from an educator and
two of her students, who are benefiting from all this program has to offer and getting
ready for college courses. Both girls were so poised. We were able to catch up with some of last
year's scholarship recipients and heard that they were faring very well in college. Also, we met
Alyson Clegg, who received our Cuesta College scholarship for the nursing program. It was
wonderful to see that the Woman's Club has made a difference in each of their lives. Ladies,
there are four months left in this year and we have events yet to come. Support our club, bring a
friend and make memories. - Bobbi Cherry
Please remember to
bring any items of jewelry that you
can no longer use to our February
club meeting so that Carol Browne
and her team will have a great
assortment of items for our Bingo
fundraiser in March. If you need
anything picked up, please call
Alison Stuart at (805) 473-1866 and
we will get that arranged. Any type
of jewelry (costume or fine) is
welcome in whatever state of repair!
Jewelry with a Past
The January Luncheon program
was truly inspirational and reminds us why
we do all this fundraising! Thank you Elis-
abeth for coordinating this program.
Though she has been a member for a
while, Pat Hermenegildo was formally
introduced to our club. The Opportunity Drawing was
won by Patti Roberts and Loretta Newman with 10
members also walking away with soup cans filled
with succulents from table décor.

Well-deserved Commendation

Woman’s Club of Arroyo Grande
with a commendation for fund-
raising efforts for the kitchen

begin sometime during the summer!
FUNDRAISING NEWS! Hopefully when you read this in February we will have had the
second of our club year fundraisers - the High School Music/Dance Talent Showcase - and
continued to raise significant funds towards our college scholarships and charitable activities. As
always , I so appreciate all of you who support these events by buying tickets, bringing your
friends, family and neighbors and donating both money and food so generously. I know that our
Five Cities community really enjoys our events and I hear positive feedback all the time about
how much our Woman's Club does to assist our area. Next up is Bingo! on Saturday, March 11th
(the day right after our March club lunch). Since this event is approaching so quickly I would ask that if you
have any items to donate as a Bingo prize or for a raffle prize that you will please bring that to our February
meeting or call me and I will make sure to pick it up. Anything new that you think appropriate probably
will be... and gift cards are especially welcome! We will also have posters to get out and tickets to sell so see
Robyn Dunne if you can help with publicity; get tickets for yourself and to sell as well. Bingo is always big
fun at our club. This year will include a drawing for the Fabulous Money Hat (need not to present to win)
as well as raffle prizes. We will have our popular “Jewelry With a Past” again for your shopping pleasure. I
will definitely need some help with food and will take sign-ups for people who are willing to bring finger
food to share with our hungry gamers. Please don't hesitate to email or call me if you have any questions or
suggestions - I am always available to hear your ideas as they are generally so creative and useful, so get in
touch! Thank you again and see you very soon. — Alison
(Excerpts from letter from Alicia Cruz, read by her mother, Rosa Avila)
Good afternoon everyone, Although I am not able to attend this luncheon, I feel very lucky to have been a scholarship recipient of the Woman’s Club of Arroyo Grande. I met some of these wonderful ladies during my senior year of high school in 2013. They allowed me to share my story and my aspirations and were so kind to award me a scholarship that helped pay some of my expenses during my first year at Cal Poly, SLO. I was surprised to be contacted the following year...this group of women continued supporting me every year until 2016. This past December, 2016, I graduated from Cal Poly with a BA degree in Sociology, with minors in Child Development, Psychology, & Spanish. I made great friends, learned so much about the society around me, grew as a professional, and learned so much about myself…. All of my academic and extracurricular experiences are what prepared me to now have a job in a non-profit organization serving families and children. Once again, thank you so much for supporting and believing in me. - Alicia Cruz
Suzy Anderson recalls two of our members who passed away in January 2017.
Dorathy Curry, known to us as Dottie, was presi-dent in 1996 and did a bang-up job with member-ship just a few years ago. She and her Flam-ing Ukes group were often listed in our yearbook
as a program. In her earlier life Dottie became a truck driver for the U.S. Army during WWII. She later returned to school for her AA degree to become a RN. She and her husband Weldon owned and operated the both the Manor Nursing Home and Green Meadows Nursing Home. We will surely miss her. Dottie's family requests that in lieu of flowers, do-
nations can be made to the WCAG scholarship fund.
Kay Tavasti was a long term member of our club and the Shell Beach Woman's Club. She served eight years on Pismo Beach Parks & Recreation Com-mission and was one of the founders and presi-dent of the Meals on Wheels program. In her earli-
er life she supported her husband's Air Force career. She also worked for 15 years as the Executive Secretary and Human Resources Manager for Vidar/TRW. In lieu of flow-ers, please consider donating to one of her favorite charities: St. Jude's Children Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital, Meals on Wheels, or Dinosaur Caves Preservation Society. Let us always remember those who belonged to our club
and served it well.
Letter from former member & centenarian Anita Garcia (She’d love to hear from you!)
Dearest Friends and Family—It is with much excitement
that I am again on the move… Westward Ho! Back to
California I go! I will be residing in a comfortable personal
care home with several other ladies...halfway between the
local See’s Candy store and my daughter, Carol, aka Savita’s
house, in Santa Rosa...it is bound to be a sweet experience.
Hope the new year brings great blessings to you all.

SUNSHINE LADY Sharon
"Strange to be the 'Sunshine' person in the midst of all the rain. But how glad we are to receive it in abundance this winter! A special Christmas card was sent to Freddie Newman, with love from all of us. A card of sympathy to Lynda Nath, at the loss of her cousin. Good wishes went to Bobbi Cherry, who had voice problems during the last board meeting. And, I'm sure Laura Vopatek is much better by now, but a card was sent when she had a bad cold." Mary Carson’s bandage on her hand is getting smaller….Yay! And to all of those who have struggled with the cold & flu season, take care and stay well! Please give me a buzz if you know of someone who needs a cheery note or simply needs recognition. Sunshine Lady Sharon Boyajian phone: 489-5426 email: [email protected]
