February – World Understanding Month

February is a special month, in that it is the shortest month in the year, but it is has very special days: Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day, honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, both born in February.

This month is also very special for an organization close to my heart; one that helped mold me … the Boy Scouts of America. February 2010 marks their 100th Anniversary. Remember to do a service project for the Boy Scouts.

We have reached the bell lap in our Rotary year and we need to finish strong in this race. This is not the time to maintain your pace, as other runners will pass you going into the final curve before the stretch run to the finish line. A bit more effort is needed to pick up your knees and stretch your legs. The time is now to make your finishing move. You must be the take-charge leader to finish your goals set at the beginning of the race. Now is time for you to fill out the necessary forms for recognition by the RI President John Kenny for a job well done. Membership continues to be vital to the success of Rotary. Without members, we will not be able to complete our current service projects nor think about future projects and opportunities.

District Governor Errol Alberga, Rotary District 7020, which includes Haiti, has written a letter stating that it is too early to access the many service projects that they will need. He will post the needs on the Rotary web site and world community project list. This will be another opportunity for “Building Communities, Bridging Continents.”

RI President-Elect Ray Klingensmith Unveils 2010-2011 Rotary Theme: Building Communities Bridging Continents

At the opening plenary session of the 2010-2011 International Assembly on January 18, RI President-Elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-2011 Rotary theme: Building Communities Bridging Continents.

Klinginsmith said that in reviewing the RI themes of years past, he noticed that only a few spoke to non-Rotarians. So, he decided to search for a briefly-stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: to explain Rotary to

non-Rotarians, and to validate our work for Rotarians. "The words I have selected to describe Rotary's current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best: Building Communities -- Bridging Continents.”

He is a member of the District Foundation Committee and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, RYLA.

He is an active Board Member of the Lawrenceville Meals on Wheels Program, for which Lawrenceville now delivers meals each week. He is President of the Greater Pittsburgh Sister Cities Association, an organization promoting international relationships and hosting businesspeople, educators, and government officials from international cities to Pittsburgh. For the past few years Tom, and his wife Marie, have mentored eleventh grade students at Career Connections Charter High School in Lawrenceville. Tom is a member of “Friends of Danang”, an organization that raises money for humanitarian projects in and around the City of Danang, Vietnam. Its aim is to nurture better understanding between the citizens of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Danang, Vietnam regions. Tom hopes to one day develop a Rotary Club in Danang. His passion for the environment is reflected in his business, Urban Green Development, where he rehabilitates single-family homes utilizing “green” earth friendly products, systems and applications. The end result is a home that lessens global impact, increases efficiency and reduces the dependence on fossil fuels. Tom has served over 20 years as a collegiate volleyball official, as well as a coach at the Division I level. His crowning achievement was becoming an international official and being chosen to participate in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. “The Special Quality of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh’s New Citizen Reception” Andy Dlinn In this country, there are those individuals who, though they may have lived here for many years, have always considered themselves outsiders, to a degree, because they were citizens of a foreign country. To help remove that final barrier for many such southwestern Pennsylvanians, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh has hosted a New Citizens Reception every month after the prospective applicant is sworn in as a full US citizen, in District Court. To recognize that special experience on that unforgettable day, Pittsburgh Rotary hosts a lavish coffee and Danish reception at the Omni William Penn Hotel, the oldest and most distinctive hotel in the region. Our program includes a master of ceremonies, which has included such notables as Deputy Editorial Page Editor for the Post-Gazette, Reg Henry and Past Presidents, Richard Dixon and Lou Walsh. Reg strikes an immediate connection with the attendees since he, too, was born in a foreign country and tells everyone “… do not consider yourself second-class because you were not born here. You are actually better since you chose to become a citizen!”

Our new citizens frequently express how grateful they are to finally be a citizen of the United States. Some talk about the opportunity this country offers; some talk about their life stories, which sometimes includes harrowing escapes and life-risking adventures, just trying to get to this country … and to experience the freedom that many who are born here take for granted. One new citizen spoke of how he escaped from Iraq, only to go back later, sneak into the country to rescue his family, and bring them all to safety. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Another speaker counseled the new citizens to learn the English language if they truly wanted to succeed in America. New Citizens Receptions, held on the third Friday of every month, can truly be life-changing events. I know. When my formerly French wife became a citizen, and attended a New Citizens Reception, I was so impressed with the event, that I chose to chair the New Citizens Committee, and have held this position for several years. If you find yourself in Pittsburgh on the third Friday of the month, be my guest at the New Citizens Reception at the Omni Hotel, 10:30AM. Check the hotel marquee for room. Be a part one of the oldest and most endearing projects of the downtown Pittsburgh Rotary Club.

Ambassadorial Scholars … Now Jeff Klink

Letter from Ambassadorial Scholar in Nigeria Good morning Rotarians Beck and Piconi: I hope is well in U.S.C. I wanted to send a quick update from Nigeria, as I have just arrived two days ago. Everything ran very smoothly. I have been taken care of quite nicely by my Host Counselor, Rtn. Rhoda Bassey, who is the former President of the Club of Asokoro, one of eight Rotary Clubs in Abuja. I have also spoken briefly with the Ambassador Coker and the District Governor of District 9125, Dr. Kazeem Mustapha. Both have been very gracious in their welcome and I will be meeting them this weekend. There is a joint conference with all the Abuja Clubs on the 23rd which I will be presenting at. I have also been in touch with TRF Trustee Majiaygbe. He is, unfortunately, in the U.S. at the moment, but I will meet with him upon his return, and until then, I am keeping him updated via email. Rtn Rhoda gave me a copy of the magazine her Club puts out. They have several great programs going on including a partnership with VTC, or Vantaged Teens Centre, an outreach and training program for orphans and vulnerable youth with parents with HIV/AIDS. Currently, they support 16 youth by providing school fees, uniforms, etc. I will pass on more information as I learn more. I just wanted to give you a brief idea. Thanks and Take Care, Emily Emily M. District 7300 Mid-Year Meeting

District Governor, Rick Martin hosted the 2009-2010 District 7300 Mid-Year Meeting on Saturday, January 30, at the Radisson Hotel in Green Tree. The event was well-attended with most of the clubs in the District represented. DG Rick Martin led discussions on: club goals, membership, GSE, annual giving, Gates challenge, Ghana update, RYLA, the presidential award, District Conference at Oglebay, the RI Convention in Montreal. PDG Kathy Crawford showed a short film on Oglebay Resort. Walt Sickles discussed arrangements for the RI Convention. Georgia Petropoulos Muir gave an overview of her “Special” GSE trip to Ghana (see article on page 15). Dave Trumbore, President of the soon-to-be-chartered Pittsburgh’s South Side Rotary Club gave an update on his club. And Cindy Sakala spoke about the disaster in Haiti and our District’s plans to help. Breakfast was delicious and bountiful, and, as always happens when Rotarians get together, the camaraderie in the room was delightful.

RYLA … Exciting Opportunity for Students

John Chamberlin of the Pittsburgh Rotary Club is spreading the word about RYLA 2010. Eligible students are current high-school juniors, who demonstrate leadership qualities. Each club is asked to sponsor at least two students. The program begins June 25 through July 1, 2010, at LaRoche College. Applications are to be submitted to the District Secretariat by May 1. The cost of the program is $400; the club contributes $250 per student and the student’s contribution is $150. However, there are funds available for students who are not financially able to contribute. The RYLA curriculum includes personal development, moral, ethical identifications, philosophy of leadership and problem solving. An additional perk for students who attend RYLA is that LaRoche College will grant a $5,000 scholarship each year for four years (subject to terms and conditions). Preparation Cindy Sakala, District Governor-Elect

Relief for Haiti … It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. Only two months ago I was in Port au Prince, Haiti. Our group of District Governors-Elect from several zones in the US and Haiti participated in meetings to determine how best to conduct service projects in that country. At that time we had no idea how important the connections we were making would become in such a short time. Knowing that the good Rotarians of District 7300 are eager to help the people of Haiti in this difficult time, DG Rick Martin, District Governor-Nominee Sue Kelly, PDG Mark Brilmyer and I are coordinating a district-wide service project to meet the near-term needs of our Haitian neighbors. The plan is to have a large-scale meal-packing event to fill a shipping container with nutritious food and ship it to Haiti. The meal is a rice, soy protein, dried vegetable, vitamin and mineral mixture which serves six. (It is a duplication of “The Meal Fights Hunger” project conducted by the Carnegie-Collier Rotary club.) Donations of time, talent and treasure will be needed to make this project a success. Details will be made available as soon as plans are finalized. In the meantime, monetary donations to support District 7300 Haiti relief efforts are being accepted. Make checks payable to: Rotary District 7300 Foundation (write “Haiti Relief” in the subject line of the check.) Mail to: Parkvale Bank Attention: Bob Yoswick 4220 William Penn Highway Monroeville, PA 15146 Already Rotarians have begun to mobilize to bring immediate aid to Haiti following the earthquake disaster. You can read about some of these efforts on the Rotary International website: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/100113_news_haitirelief.aspx To contribute to the Donor Advised Fund of The Rotary Foundation for Haiti Earthquake Relief: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/haiti_earthquake_relief_daf_en.pdf For more information or for any questions on the Donor Advised Fund, please contact Annie Palubicki, DAF Specialist, at: 847-866-3488 or [email protected] The Three Rivers Rotary Club has already raised enough at their January 15th meeting for 3 Shelter Boxes! For those clubs that have agreed to participate in the water refurbishment project in Deslandes, Haiti, no decision will be made about the project until we receive a report from the Deslandes community. I have not yet heard how they were affected by the earthquake. Please continue to keep the people of Haiti, especially our Rotarian brothers and sisters, in your thoughts and prayers. Many of our fellow Rotarians are, themselves, suffering severe hardships and grieving the loss of loved ones. Our hearts go out to them. Together we can help.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ January 18, 2010, President John Kenny and Trustee Chair Glenn E. Estess Sr. Rotary International One Rotary Center 1560 Sherman Avenue Evanston, Illinois USA

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter expressing sympathy and concern for the people of Haiti caused by the devastating earthquake which occurred on Tuesday January 12, 2010.

Our District is doing the extra ordinary, as was done in 2008 when four hurricanes destroyed Haiti in August of that year. Rotarian Dr. Claude Surena, our Disaster Chair in Haiti, DGN Dr. Guy Theodore, and the Haiti Task Force Team of Rotarians on the ground, are working feverishly in providing outstanding Service Above Self under very trying circumstances.

PDG Richard ‘Dick’ McCombe Haiti Liaison Chair, and PRID Barry Rassin, have been superb liaison for action in coordinating with First Responder Agencies in providing relief. Rotarians throughout our District are mobilized and working, as are Rotarians in the Caribbean Partnership in Zones 33 and 34. Our neighbouring Districts 7000 and 7030 are fully supportive.

The challenges remain, the port is closed, the airport in Port au Prince is over taxed and on occasion have to turn flights away, and the communication systems are restrictive. We are working around those; there are plans to ship by sea to neighbouring Dominican Republic and transship over land to Haiti. We are using Satellite Phones to communicate; this disaster investment has been a life saver. Although donations in cash and kind have been coming in from Rotarians, I would like to ask for your assistance in personally getting the word out to all the Rotary world, to assist through donations to the DAF at TRF or to our District Disaster Account, (our website at district 7020.org for information), which can accept many Currencies as well as US$.

It is too early to identify Projects, but at the right time we will do so with the Rotary Community via the RI website, the World Community Service Programmed Coordinator, and the RI Projects Database project LINK.

It is heartening to have the support of such a wonderful organization, Rotary. One Love,

December Fundraiser “Fruitful” for North Boroughs Rotary Dave Hutchinson

The North Boroughs Rotary Club once again succeeded in completing a very profitable “Fruit Box Project” fundraiser this past December. This is the primary fundraiser for the club; we ship combinations of boxes of apples, pears, grapefruit, Vermont cheddar, mammoth pecans and fruity preserves to over 1300 addresses throughout the area and across the U.S. All orders are hand-packed by North Boroughs members, and most are shipped as

North Boroughs Rotarians

gifts (anywhere in the U.S. for only $10) in time for the holidays. Since the inception of the project, many years ago, the club has raised over $300,000 for local charities in the Northern Pittsburgh suburbs. The boxes make great gifts for out of town friends and relatives and also for employers wishing to thank their clients and customers. For more details contact Jon Thomas [email protected]

Greater McKees Rocks Receives Best Gift of All Denise Vergenes

Every year the Greater McKees Rocks Rotary Club holds a Christmas party for the residents of Allegheny Valley School. Founded in 1960, Allegheny Valley School operates residential and therapeutic programs throughout Pennsylvania for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Club member Dick Rizzutto, AVS Human Resources, provides us with a list of the residents and their gift requests for Santa. The list is divided among the club members who do all of the shopping and wrapping. Various vendors provide donations of snacks, crayons and various items for “goodie bags" to be given with the gifts. On the day of the party, the club meets for our weekly meeting and assembles the goodie bags. We then head to the AVS gym where the residents have gathered in joyful anticipation of Santa's arrival. As Santa enters the building, it is difficult to not be overcome with emotion while watching the residents cheer and shout with happiness. One by one, the residents are called to come and greet Santa and receive their gifts. Santa also enjoys the many hugs he receives! After all the gifts have been distributed, Santa leads the group in a few Christmas songs.

It is truly an honor to be able to provide this service to the school. It reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas and is genuinely heartwarming. The residents may have received material gifts from Santa, but we are the ones who receive the best gift ... seeing the pure, innocent happiness in the residents' eyes -- priceless.

Rotary Foundation Denny Crawford The Rotary Foundation … we’re off to a good start!

The first half of Rotary year 2009-2010 is now over. The hectic holidays are behind us and by now most, or all, of our New Year’s resolutions have been broken. I certainly hope that your resolution to give to the Rotary Foundation will be kept. Through January, I visited 21 of our 49 clubs to talk personally about The Rotary Foundation. I will be scheduling the remaining clubs shortly. We’ve already had a number of people get up at the meetings to make their $100 donation for Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY), or write a check for $1,000 to become a Paul Harris Fellow. At the Pleasant Hills Club, Joe Weiss told me he wanted to become a major donor with a donation of $10,000; we presented Joe and Judy their Crystal at the Foundation Dinner in November. In addition we have had donations of $75,000 and $50,000 from anonymous donors in the District. As you can see, District 7300 is off to a good start. Let’s not rest on our laurels. Please make sure that you make your EREY donation of a MINIMUM of $100 as soon as you can. Don’t forget that in kind donations of stock holdings, property, and so on can be made to The Rotary Foundation as well. Likewise, a codicil to your will can not only benefit The Rotary Foundation Permanent Fund, but, in many cases, it can lower your tax burden and pass more on to your heirs. Regardless of what you give or how you give it, rest assured that by giving to The Rotary Foundation, you’re giving to one of the largest, most efficiently run foundations in the world. Together we can change the world!

Pleasant Hills Rotarians Visit Rotary Float at Rose Parade

Dan Strussenberg, of Pleasant Hills Rotary, and his wife, Diane, were in Pasadena on January 1 for the Tournament of Roses Parade. Rotary has had a float in the Rose Parade every year since 1980. This year the Rotary float won the Tournament Volunteer’s Trophy for best floral design of theme for 35 feet and under.

2010 Rotary Float

Hundreds of volunteers from Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs all over the world decorate the float each year. This year the Rose Parade theme was “A Cut Above the Rest,” so the Rotary float theme was “Service Above the Rest”. The float included an oversized fuzzy teddy bear, dressed in a doctor’s white coat, complete with stethoscope, to remind the world of Rotary’s commitment to eradicating polio worldwide. For further information and photos, and to find out how you can be involved in this exciting event, see:

Georgia Petropoulos Muir from the Oakland Club is leading a Group Study Exchange in Ghana. The trip

brings together experts from the United States, France, Nepal, Brazil, and the Netherlands to develop training materials for health workers in developing countries that focus on common treatments for the two leading causes of disability worldwide: diabetes and lymphatic filariasis. These conditions affect over 350 million people worldwide and follow a common pathway to disability through wounds and edema of the lower limb, that results in amputation. Using these materials, subsequent training for health workers will be conducted in selected countries. This training includes instruction in low-cost solutions for therapeutic footwear. Such training will increase the capacity of health care systems to effectively care for patients with multiple chronic conditions such as diabetic foot wounds, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, buruli ulcer, and long-term physical disabilities from polio, burns, and trauma. The goal is to develop a model that can be replicated in developing countries worldwide.

On Membership Karl Ohrman

Who’s in charge here?

Who’s in charge of membership development in District 7300? Is it Rick Martin, our able District Governor? Is it me, the District Membership Chair? Is it your Club President? Certainly all of the above are doing all that they can to encourage and promote membership development in our local clubs, but let’s take a look at this year’s Rotary motto. “The future of Rotary is in your hands.” Yes, it’s you, the individual member, who is in charge of membership. Only you can ask those quality people you know and respect to become a part of the oldest, the largest, the best service club in the world. The quality and quantity of your Rotary club is up to you. Accept that responsibility and dedicate yourself to the goal of sponsoring a fabulous new member before our Rotary year ends on June 30. Everyone will benefit if you do this. I repeat: The future of Rotary is in your hands! Karl Ohrman is a past president of Pittsburgh Rotary. He has served as Assistant District Governor under a number of past DGs and is currently serving as District Membership Chair. He is open to speaking to all Rotary clubs in the district about the excitement of Rotary.

Please make your reservations as soon as possible, as there is another conference going on at the same time. What to expect at this years conference:
