District 7300 2009-2010 I am honored and humbled to serve Rotary District 7300 as District Governor this coming year, and I am looking forward to meeting you during my official visits and other club and district events.

Congratulations to Past District Governor Jim Kunkelmann for his great leadership and encouragement to the individual clubs to Make Dreams Real. Jim’s year would not have been so successful without the able assistance and support from his wife, his soul mate, Sybil. With few exceptions, Sybil was there with Jim at all of the events and club visits. They are truly the perfect team and a remarkable couple.

We do have challenges to face this coming year; I use the word challenges instead of opportunities to highlight the importance of why we have Rotary clubs in our communities and why we should grow our membership and seek to expand into communities where there are no Rotary clubs. New Rotary Clock at Third and Tenth Streets in New Brighton

There’s a beautiful, new Rotary clock at the corner of Third Avenue and Tenth Street in New Brighton, courtesy of the New Brighton Rotary Club. The borough of New Brighton completed a streetscape project in the business district of the community. Actual construction spanned four years; electrical boxes were moved to the back of businesses, all gas lines were replaced, overhead electrical wiring was buried underground and old coal chutes and coal rooms under the sidewalks were filled in. New sidewalks and street lights replaced the old … and the perfect addition to the now beatified business district of New Brighton was a town clock on the corner. The Rotary clock was purchased as part of the New Brighton Rotary Club’s centennial project, but due to the streetscape project, could not be placed until now.

On Saturday, June 20, undeterred by a sudden rain shower, Rick Martin, then District Governor-Elect, dedicated the clock to the people of the town of New Brighton, with Larry Morley, Borough Manager, Tom Albanese, President of Borough Council, local business owners and

townspeople looking on. New Brighton Mayor, Rick Smith, not pictured, was present as well.

I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends by

District Governor-Elect Cindy Sakala

Hello District 7300 Rotarians!

For those whom I have yet to meet, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Cindy Sakala and I will be serving as your District Governor during the Rotary year 2010-2011, following Rick Martin. I have been a member of the Burrell Area Rotary Club for over 12 years. I share my life with my husband of 30 years, Paul and we have a wonderful daughter, Allison, who is studying to be a nurse. We live out in the country in our remodeled farmhouse on 35 acres. Paul and I enjoy gardening and growing blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. Really, I’m just an old-fashioned country girl who loves cooking, quilting and canning.

After earning my degree in Business Management from Pitt as a returning adult student, Paul and I started Sakala Stone Products in 1992, manufacturing and installing Handcrafted Stone veneer products for the building and remodeling industry. I have actually worked the installation part of the job, as well as manufacturing, sales and management of the business. Our business is based on providing quality products and excellent service at a fair price to homeowners and contractors.

Rotary is a big part of my life; I especially enjoy the fellowship. It's a pleasure meeting people from all over our area as well as Rotarians from around the world. Through Rotary I have been able to serve my local community, fellow countrymen and people in foreign lands. Our Burrell Rotary Club takes a special interest in the youth and elderly of our community. Paul and I have travelled to Biloxi, Mississippi to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Some of my most memorable Rotary experiences are from my travels to Nicaragua where the Burrell Area Rotary Club and other clubs from District 7300 helped with medical supplies and water well drilling. Paul and I love attending Rotary events in the district and participating in fundraisers and service projects. Rotary is fun! And we’ve made many good friends over the years through this wonderful organization.

This year I will be spending a good deal of time preparing for the future. That’s where you come in. As the song says, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” While it is both an honor and a privilege to serve as a District Governor, it’s a big task. Nobody does this alone. I decided to accept the position because so many good people, Rotarian friends, came forward and offered their help. There are still many positions on committees that need to be filled. Perhaps you could serve as an Assistant Governor, edit the District Governor’s Newsletter, put together Ad Books for events, or help with a district activity such as the Foundation Dinner, District Conference, Golf Outing, Interact, Youth Exchange, Membership Development or Group Study Exchange team. If you have a passion to serve, we need you! Please consider sharing your time and unique talents to help at the district level. You will be rewarded with new friends, fun experiences, and my sincerest appreciation!

Yours in service,

Cindy Sakala, District Governor-Elect

On Membership

Karl Ohrman

Please let me ask you, “What is Rotary?”

There could be a lot of different answers depending on a lot of factors but my answer is: Rotary is the oldest, biggest, best-managed, greatest service club in the world doing untold and uncountable good in every part of the world no matter how remote.

It’s the best. It’s terrific. There’s nothing like it.

Now let me ask you, “What is your Rotary Club?”

I hope that your answer is, “My Rotary Club is the best, the greatest service club in this community doing untold and uncountable good work in this community and also internationally. It’s the best. It’s terrific. There’s nothing like it.”

If that’s true, why the hesitancy to ask others to join us? Let me outline some reasons to mention when you talk to prospective members.

The Opportunity to Serve.

To serve is the reason we belong to Rotary. Yes, we laugh and have a good time but underlying all this social frivolity is every member’s desire to serve their fellow human beings no matter where they are. Of course there are other reasons to belong to Rotary.

Professional Networking.

Rotary provides a forum for Rotarians who are professional and business leaders, to meet and exchange ideas (and business cards) while they are providing service.

Personal Growth and Development.

You can stay home and watch Seinfeld reruns or you can be involved in an exciting group of dedicated people that will hone your skills that will greatly help and improve you in all aspects of your life.

Friendship.

Some of my best friends are Rotarians, not only in my home club, Pittsburgh, but also Rotarians in many other clubs that I have met through my Rotary involvement. I look forward to meeting them at every Rotary event.

Cultural Diversity.

Rotary will get you involved in an amazing mix of people. For example, through Rotary Group Study Exchange, each year our Rotary district sends a young professional team to some far away country, most recently Norway and Nigeria. And these countries send their teams over to us. It’s terrific to see these people from Norway and Nigeria experience the United States and the Pittsburgh area. Youth Exchange

We sponsor high school kids from other countries to study in the U.S. for an entire year and, yes, we send our kids over to these countries also to study for a year. It’s a great experience for our high school kids and it really builds international relations and world peace.

Rotary sponsors international projects too numerous to mention and we members have many occasions to meet people of all races, creeds, ethnicity from countries all over the world.

I love the diversity of Rotary. We’re in over 162 countries and all of us are doing the same thing: providing service to those that need it the most no matter where they are or what their color or religion.

So if you believe in the purpose of Rotary, let’s get others involved. Ask a friend, co-worker, or a neighbor to join us and benefit from Rotary like we all do. Don’t complicate it. Ask someone to join today.

Karl Ohrman is a past president of Pittsburgh Rotary, has served as Assistant District Governor under a number of past DGs and is currently serving as District Membership Chair. He is open to speaking to all Rotary clubs in the district about the excitement of Rotary. 8

USA, PUERTO RICO and US VIRGIN ISLANDS ROTARY CLUBS AND DISTRICTS

AND THE IRS From Club and District Support – Pan America Department

Rotary International, 1560 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60201 USA Telephone: 847 866-3000; Fax: 847 866-3072

What follows is not tax advice, but general information, which may be useful. Questions regarding any tax matters need to be referred to local counsel, your tax adviser or to the IRS. (http://www.irs.ustreas.gov or 1-800-829-1040) On 13 May 1958, the Internal Revenue Service declared that Rotary International (RI) and its clubs and districts are entitled to exemption from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. While Rotary districts and clubs are exempt from paying federal income tax, the law does require Rotary clubs and districts to file an annual information return on IRS Form 990, on or before the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of the annual accounting period (15 November). Certain organizations, other than private foundations, that do not normally receive more than $25,000 in gross receipts in each taxable year are not required to file Form 990.

Starting in 2008, clubs or districts with gross receipts of $25,000 or less were required to file Form 990-N, which is an electronic e-Postcard report. This report is required annually. Failure to meet the annual filing requirement for three consecutive years will result in revocation of the tax-exempt status of the club or district in question. To learn more about this requirement, and to obtain the necessary e-Postcard report form, visit the US Treasury website at: www.irs.gov/eo, or call the toll-free number: (877) 829-5500.

Numbers: RI's Group Exemption Number (referred to as "GEN" on Form 990), is 0573, which applies to RI as well as all USA, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands clubs and districts. At the same time, every club and district in the USA, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands is required to have its own Employer Identification Number (EIN). This 9-digit number is essentially a tax ID number, and has nothing to do with whether the club or district has any employees. As RI must report annually the EINs of all districts and clubs in the USA, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, the RI secretariat maintains a list of those EIN tax numbers for reference. New Rotary Clubs, however, must apply directly to the IRS for an EIN number to be assigned to the new Rotary club. Please contact your Club and District Support (CDS) representative at Rotary International headquarters if you have any questions about the EIN number for your club or district.

Tax Deductible Status: Though clubs and districts do not have to pay federal income tax, donations to clubs and districts are not tax deductible as a charitable contribution. However, such deductible status is possible for a contribution to any club or district charitable fund that has been independently classified by the IRS as qualifying under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Membership dues may be deductible for some Rotarians as a business expense. Please contact the IRS or your tax consultant or attorney for guidance on this issue.

Other Taxes: Clubs or districts may be required to file IRS Form 990-T if they have "unrelated business income." An unrelated trade or business is defined as any trade or business that is regularly carried on, and that is not substantially related to the organization's exempt purpose or function. (IRC Sec. 513)

Federal Social Security and withholding taxes, and local state income taxes may be required from a club or district that has one or more paid employees. Please contact the IRS or your tax consultant or attorney for guidance on this issue.

The laws of individual states vary in regard to state income tax, sales tax, other taxes and special licenses. The 501(c)(4) status applies only to federal income tax and does not necessarily have any bearing on state or local taxes. IRS interpretation of its Code also can vary slightly in different US Treasury districts. April 2009
