The District Conference season has begun … clubs celebrating their successes of achieving their goals. At the beginning of the Governor’s training, three years ago, our trainer mentioned how we will form a bond of friendship that will last a lifetime. And it’s so true. First, it was the “Three Amigos”, Ron Errett, District 7280, Frank Aiello, District 7330 and me, the three Western Pennsylvania Districts. Then we added District 6650, Eastern Ohio, Doug Simpson, and District 6630, John Bosco, Northeast Ohio. The five Governors are within fifty miles of each other. I had the honor and privilege to attend Frank Aiello’s

conference at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. At the reception, I was wearing the official jacket. A Rotarian was looking at the jacket and I was quick to say that Frank was a great guy to give me his jacket to wear to the formal dinner. Joint Rotary Club Dictionary Project

Correction: There was a typographical error in the Joint Rotary Club Dictionary Project article in the April issue, as to the cost of the dictionaries for third-graders. The cost of the dictionaries can be as low as $2.00 per dictionary, depending on the quantity ordered.

Rotary International Council on Legislation RI website

http://rotary.org/en/Pages/ridefault.aspx Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation, a triennial assembly, met in April to decide several issues for the forthcoming years. Some of the highlights of the meeting were:

E-clubs are now a permanent part of the Rotary fabric. Each district may have two e-clubs.

The Council made it unacceptable for clubs to discriminate against a potential member based on sexual orientation.

A fifth avenue of service “New Generations” has been created.

A dues increase of $1.00 per year for each of the next 3 years was approved, bringing the dues to $51 per year, starting with the 2011-2012 Rotary year.

The minimum number of clubs per district was increased from 30 to 33 and Rotarians per district from 1,000 to 1,200 by July 1, 2012. The Board would be able to eliminate or change the boundaries of a district that falls below the new minimums, but only after first consulting with the District Governor and the clubs.

Approved the creation of a standing committee of RI for Interact. The committee would consist of six members, each of whom would serve a term of three years, with two members appointed each year.

What Can Your Club Do for Haiti? Sandra Rebholz

A District-wide search is on for used home medical equipment, such as crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, et cetera, to send to Haiti. We now have a transportation partner to get all the equipment and supplies we collect delivered to Haiti … Global Links.

What can your club do to help in this effort? Go Thrift Store shopping! Thrift stores have an incredible supply of medical equipment just sitting in their stores. They don’t sell much, and even when they do, they don’t make much on the sale. So, your club members can visit the various thrift stores in your area, and ask them to donate their supplies to our Rotarians Helping Haiti project. For pick-up assistance, contact Green Tree Rotarian Craig Esterly, at 412 628-0836 or [email protected] .

Pittsburgh is #1 ... Again: Forbes Names Pittsburgh “Most Livable City”

PITTSBURGH -- Forbes Magazine has once again named Pittsburgh its "Most Livable City" in its annual report that looks at cost of living, unemployment rate, income growth and crime rates, among other factors.

McCandless Rotary Scholarships for Awarded for Volunteerism Craig Kawley

Four North Allegheny Students won McCandless Rotary Scholarships for volunteerism. “It is an uplifting signal that key values are indeed being passed on to the next generation,” says McCandless Rotary Club scholarship committee member Sharon Landau, when describing the tough duty that she and fellow committee members faced this year in selecting the four $1,000 scholarship winners from a large pool of very deserving applicants. Bringing clean water to African villages, bringing supplies to hurricane ravaged New Orleans and impoverished areas of Nicaragua and donating time to and talent to adaptive swim programs are just a few of the many ways these students have lived the Rotary maxim of “service above self”.

The club gives generously to many causes and recognizing the talented young men and women who, by example, can expand the role of service above self in college and professional life is a natural extension of the mission. The club received more than fifty applicants from North Allegheny, Vincentian and North Hills High Schools. The selflessness exhibited by students from all three of these schools is a testament to the communities, the parents, spiritual leaders, educators, coaches and other mentors who are making a positive impact. Ambassadorial Scholars Jeff Klink

Hello, fellow Rotarians!! This month’s article is about one of Rotary’s best kept secrets: Rotary World Peace Fellowships. World Peace Fellows are leaders promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict through lives, careers, and service activities.

There are seven (soon to be six) Universities throughout the world that provide the training and education necessary to earn a master’s degree in conflict resolution or related fields. These are generally two year programs. There is also a non-degree certificate program available. The seven Rotary Centers for conflict resolution are: Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, Duke University, NC, International Christian University, Japan, Universidad del Salvador, Argentina, University of Bradford, UK, University of Queensland, Australia, and University of Cal-Berkley, CA (to be discontinued in 2011).

The scholarships, with awards up to $50k, will cover tuition, room and board, transportation, and internships. All other ancillary funding must come from the student. Once again, you and I, and our families (sorry, again, Dave) are not eligible for these scholarships. But, if you know of someone who would make a good World Peace Scholar, please let me know. They can gather more information from the website: www.Rotary.org/StudentandYouthPrograms/RotaryWorldPeaceFellows , or from publication 084-EN-(909).

One other note, two of our scholars – one returned to our district, one here studying, will be speaking at Oglebay after Thursday evening’s dinner.

RYLA … Exciting Opportunity for Students John Chamberlin of the Pittsburgh Rotary Club is spreading the word about RYLA 2010. Eligible students are current high-school juniors, who demonstrate leadership qualities.

Each club is asked to sponsor at least two students. The program begins June 25 through July 1, 2010, at LaRoche College. Applications are to be submitted to the District Secretariat by May 1. The cost of the program is $400; the club contributes $250 per student and the student’s contribution is $150. However, there are funds available for students who are not financially able to contribute. The RYLA curriculum includes personal development, moral, ethical identifications, philosophy of leadership and problem solving.

An additional perk for students who attend RYLA is that subject to terms and conditions, LaRoche College will grant a $5,000 scholarship each year for four years, over and above any other scholarship or grant the student may receive from the college. Rotarians Seeking Employment … Rotarians Seeking Employees

With the current economy as it is, many Rotarians are being displaced from their jobs. In an effort to help our fellow Rotarians, District 7300 will post their resumes on the District 7300 website. This will allow networking opportunities for Rotarians seeking employment as well as for Rotarians seeking to hire qualified staff.

Send your resumes to Webmaster Marc Myers: [email protected] for posting.

A leading cause of failure and decreases in requests for your business is often poor and inconsistent customer-centricity and service. Better yet, a way to differentiate YOUR business from your competitor’s is to provide ASTONISHING customer service. Yet, few businesses have dedicated, customer service training that is standardized, habituated, documented and iterated. Anyone of your staff can RECOGNIZE good/bad customer service. The question is, who can EXECUTE great customer service CONSISTANTLY? 365 CriticalCUSTOMERCare™ training helps to: Define “High Yield Practices (HYP)” of a customer-centric culture; Comprehend how all aspects of operating must be customer-centric; Define the three critical categories of customers in critical care delivery. Apply the four high-affinity customer-centric principles of the DIRT ZONE™: Dignity, Inclusiveness, Respect, a sense of Team). Have a more clarified understanding of how customer-centricity impacts the financial aspects of your business. Be more productive and effective on the job and in the community. Join us for fun and fellowship!

District Assembly 2010 The District Assembly, which took place on Saturday, April 17, at the Radisson Hotel in Green Tree, was very well attended. First on the agenda was a bountiful breakfast and fellowship at the breakfast tables. The District Training Team put together great programs that both educate and inspire: Public Relations expert, Beth Caldwell, conducted an interactive session on working with the media as clubs develop their own publicity plan. Attendees learned how to apply for a District Simplified Grant or a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant . Webmaster, Marc Myers conducted a mini training class on how to maintain members’ profiles and club information on the District 7300 website. Stu Benson explained how clubs can take advantage of charitable giving and tax advantages by using the Rotary District 7300 Foundation. Gladys Maharam’s presentation was about records retention … what Rotary information to keep and what to throw away. Gladys, a former Deputy Director of the Carnegie Library, gave a very interesting presentation on records retention and archiving. Other topics on Youth Programs, Community Service Project and Club Fundraisers, and more were presented. And the breakout sessions were very informative and productive.

Lions DG Chuck Martin’s District Conference Rick Martin

The trip to the Lions District 2-S2 Conference was great. Mom, my sister, Kay, and her husband, Roger, and I arrived on Friday, April 30th at the Hilton Houston Westcase Hotel. We were greeted at the airport by my sister-in-law, Sandy and my nephew, Adrian, who had just arrived from Atlanta. As we checked in to the conference, Mom’s name badge had “#1 Mom” under her name. My name badge had “Rotary International” under my name and “Brother to the Governor”. The conference committee arranged to have a Rotary flag for me, without any red marking of a “NOT” through it or a lion with a hammer. Glenn Starr, 1st District Vice Governor (DGE) was very cordial and made my Mom’s day on Friday evening. During the second half of the Blues Brothers show, Glen

took my mother onto the dance floor and danced with her and her wheelchair. That was truly the highlight of the evening. Saturday morning started off with the Way-Too-Early Breakfast with

entertainment from Jameson and the Jazz Boyz. After breakfast, the nomination for candidates for next year’s Governor and on down to the different state boards was held. Each candidate had members to make the nomination and second the nomination. In theory, Glen Starr could have lost out to be elected District Governor. All of the candidates were unopposed. The Texas Lion Districts support a statewide Lions Camp for children in need. Two Directors from each of the sixteen districts comprise the leadership for this camp. Lunch was the annual Distinguished Achievement Awards Presentation, hosted by the District 2-S2 PDG Association. The afternoon was spent with the memorial service, followed by the business meeting voting on the candidates and three amendments to their District by-laws. The evening was the formal Governor’s banquet. The speaker for the evening was Bruce Murray, Past International Director from St Marys, Ontario, Canada. Bruce made several good points regarding the importance of doing stuff and taking charge. The Lions International Theme for this year is Move to Grow. Chuck encouraged his members to grow their membership and do more service projects. If the members do not move and change they will no longer be a vital organization in the community. Chuck will finish the year with a net growth and his clubs doing more projects. The upcoming leaders of Glen Starr and Rick Reynolds will continue the great traditions of the district.

I have always looked up to Chuck, for his wisdom and dedication. And I am proud to call him my brother.

Pennies for Polio

Cindy Sakala, District Governor-Elect

What do you think is Rotary International’s #1 priority for the 2010-11 Rotary year? If you said polio eradication, you’re right. This task, initiated by Rotary in 1985, has been embraced by the world and touches every inhabitable part of our planet. We are so close – down to “The Final Inch.” This last inch is the most difficult and costly. The good news is that Rotary International has a very valuable ally in this final push – The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation has pledged not $100,000,000, but now $200,000,000 for Rotary Clubs to match. That’s $400,000,000! At a cost of 60¢ per dose, that’s 66.67 million children immunized from the dreaded polio virus, if we meet the goal. It’s not easy asking Rotarians to give again and again, especially in this tough economy, so I’ve been searching for ideas that will help Rotary Clubs in District 7300 to meet this important challenge. The following idea came from a neighboring district during the last Presidents-Elect Training Seminar.

Pennies for Polio is a way to meet the goal without taxing our members. Setting out collection cans with information about Rotary’s polio eradication campaign serves two purposes: First, it educates the public by raising awareness and second, it raises money from non-Rotarians. An added bonus is that the Rotary Club has a spot in the public eye, increasing its visibility in the community it serves. To see what other Rotary Clubs around

the country are doing, type “pennies for polio” in the search bar of your browser. Good luck! DVDs of “The Final Inch,” a powerful documentary about the polio eradication campaign as seen from the field, will be available to members for a club program. This 38-minute movie is very inspirational. It will be available for loan to clubs through the Assistant District Governors. Now for some really good news: India has not reported any new cases of polio for 7 weeks! Check out the Rotary International website for more news about the polio eradication campaign at www.rotary.org. Here’s a quote that, to me, sums up the final inch of polio eradication: “The shortest distance between two points is a powerful intention.” Benjamin Shield Yours in Service,

Cindy Sakala District Governor-Elect [email protected] 724 339-2224

Highlighting: Carnegie-Collier Rotary Clubxxx Diane Karcz We are so excited to share with everyone that we have met or exceeded all of goals for 2009-2010! We have a wonderful group of Rotarians working very well together, including all of new members. They have pitched right in and are working hard. So far this year, we have 9 new members and still counting (4 over our goal). Thanks to all who joined us or supported our annual “Big Event” held on April 17, 2010. We had a wonderful turn out and raised more money than ever. Our new format worked out very well with a little help from Mother Nature. Our tent was blown off the building along with the lights, tethers, cement and tables the evening before our event. Thanks to the quick thinking and cooperation of Glenn from The Club at Nevillewood, along with Michelle and crew, our event went off without a hitch! (Or a tent.) We had a great time, great food, lots of great prizes and winners. If you missed it this year … there is always next year. We’ll look forward to having you! We are now planning our Relay for Life held at Carlynton High School Track on May 22, 2010. We are forming teams and accepting donations for this annual community event as we speak. It is a wonderful cause and brings out the best in all involved. You can walk the track for a minute, an hour or “all night long” if you please! We invite you to make time to visit our booth and/or make a contribution by contacting John Mendenhall at [email protected] for more information. You’ll be glad you did! Please mark your calendars for our Inaugural Wine tasting Extravaganza on Friday, June 11, 2010 at The Club at Nevillewood. You don’t want to miss this: Our Event is called SIP for Hunger and will benefit our “Meal Fights Hunger” program and other local hunger programs. The V.I.P. Premier tasting begins at 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm immediately followed by the Grand Tasting from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm. There has been a wonderful response to this event already and V.I.P. ticket sales are limited. Contact us at 412‐316‐6464 for your tickets. We have set up a special cell phone line that will be manned to take your calls. There are also sponsorships and advertising opportunities available. Please contact us at [email protected] for any questions regarding this fabulous night of fellowship and fund raising. V.I.P. Tickets are $100 and include both tastings. Grand Tasting tickets are $50. And for the most exciting news, it is George Haudenshield’s 90th Birthday Celebration too! If you think that’s great, how about that he has been a Rotarian for over 61 years? Now that’s something to celebrate! Come join us. Our Club would like to thank Rick Martin for the great leadership over the past year and send congratulations to Cindy Sakala on a very informative and interactive District Assembly on April 17, 2010. Good Luck next year as District Governor, Cindy! With big shoes to fill, we know you will do a great job! And this article wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t send with pride and admiration, our best wishes to one of own, District Governor-Elect, Sue Kelly! Congratulations Sue…there is no doubt you will be a great support for Cindy and our entire District. Finally, as my year comes to a close, I want to thank our club members and especially the officers, Ted Katz, V.P., Kay Phanse, Secretary and John Mendenhall, Treasurer and our board for their help and support in making this a wonderful experience and a great year as President of the Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club. “Keep a green tree in your heart, and perhaps a singing bird will come.” -- Chinese Proverb

Rotary Foundation Rick Martin

PDGs Dennis and Kathy Crawford Inducted into Arch Klumph Society On April 22, 2010, Denny and Kathy Crawford were inducted into the Arch C. Klumph Society. Foundation donors whose cumulative contributions equal or exceed US$250,000.00 qualify for the society, named in honor of Past President Arch C. Klumph. The Crawfords, both Past District

Governors in District 7300, are the second couple from our District to be inducted into the Arch C. Klumph Society; the first couple was Paul and Jean Elder. They are the sixth Rotarian couple to be inducted, but first PDG couple. Rotary Foundation Trustee

Chair, Glenn Estess, Sr., officiated at the induction ceremony at Rotary Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. District 7300 Rotarians, PDG Bob Rupp,

PDG Mark Brilmyer, DGE Cindy Sakala, DG Rick Martin and President-Elect Herm Dieckmann celebrated with Kathy and Denny at dinner the night before the induction ceremony.

Memorial Service for Bob Brindley Tom Nunnally A memorial service was held for Bob Brindley at the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 24. Bob was a charter member of the Forest Hills Rotary Club and had sixty three years of perfect attendance. Rotarians from all over the District were present to honor Bob. Memorial remarks were given by

his son, Bill, friends, and Past District Governor Kathy Crawford, on behalf of Rotary. Some Rotarians rose to speak from their pews, calling to mind the golf outings

Bob organized, the "On To" campaigns for the International Conventions, his jokes, and his “Round Tuits”. Penny Lane was there to remember Bob's help with getting a van to assist her and Fawn help those who need dogs for assistance. Bob’s lady love, Bev Overand was pleased with the affection everyone showed for Bob. It was a very moving, sweet service; a tribute Bob would have enjoyed.

On Membership Karl Ohrman

Three Questions …

When I was younger, there was a popular game show called 20 Questions. The panelists tried to identify an object by asking no more than 20 questions; “Is it bigger than a bread box?” was a popular question. Another popular game show was Name That Tune. Guests tried to identify songs in as few notes as possible. This is a Rotary membership column. Let’s find out the solution to membership growth in only 3 questions. First, “What is RI President John Kenny’s motto?” Answer, “The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.” Second question, “Do you believe that the future of Rotary is in your hands?” Answer, if you’re reading this column, I would hope that you do believe this. Third and most important question, “What are you going to do about it?” Answer, if you truly believe that the future of Rotary is in your hands then you must take action. You must develop a list of 5 good people that you know in your heart are good people who would benefit if they became Rotarians. Then you must bring them to one of your meetings or club activities and introduce them to your fellow members. You must demonstrate the good work that all of you are doing in your community and around the world. Some of the 5 will decline joining for good reasons. But 1 or 2 will see that Rotary is a terrific organization doing wonderful things and they will join your club and become active Rotarians. These new members will be better people because of your action. Your club will be a better club because of your action. Indeed, the future of Rotary is in your hands. Karl Ohrman is a past president of Pittsburgh Rotary. He has served as Assistant District Governor under a number of past DGs and is currently serving as District Membership Chair. He is open to speaking to all Rotary clubs in the district about the excitement of Rotary.

One Laptop per Child

The Rotarian Conversation Nicholas Negroponte The Rotarian – March 2010

When it comes to technology, Nicholas Negroponte insists there’s a difference between “children as a

market and children as a mission.” The founder and chair of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) recognizes that computer manufacturers may not see it his way, but Negroponte will not be distracted from his belief that children become involved in the learning process when they become involved with interactive digital technology. One Laptop per Child aims to provide poor children around the

world with inexpensive, Internet-connected computers. Its philosophy owes much to the ideas of Seymour Papert, a mathematician who theorized four decades ago that children would develop intellectually and creatively from an early introduction to computer programming. No businesslike black or gray hardware for this nonprofit, though. Its bright-green machines can be found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Interact: Future Rotarians “The future of Rotary is in your hands” … what a challenge to us in the service to our youth! Truly, we must pass the baton to the next generation. There is a wonderful vehicle in place to do this … not only in our district but throughout the world. It is Interact -- the high school based service club within the high school sponsored by the local Rotary club. -- Betty Dunn, District Interact Chairman Member, Forest Hills Rotary Club

Focus on Literacy Gladys Maharam

As your club begins planning for the fall, remember that International Literacy Day is September 8. Consider a literacy program or project for that week. Ideas include: · a speaker from literacy organizations such as the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Beginning with Books or other organizations that focus on reading and literacy · Rotarians from other clubs who have worked on a successive project such as distributing dictionaries to 3rd graders or sponsoring a spelling bee · a representative from your local school district to bring your Club up to date on local initiatives · a librarian from a local library to talk about the Summer Reading activities or other projects that they are sponsoring · your Club Literacy Chair summarizing some of the innovative programs going on throughout the world  Gladys Maharam District Literacy Chair [email protected]

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication  As of 1 May, 2010, Rotarians have raised about $121 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.
