A key feature of our approach is to nurture your development in small class sizes, complemented with a high level of personal tutor support. In the most recent Which? report issued January 2013, feedback from the National Higher Education Student Survey shows that Wirral Met College has been identified as being in the top 5 colleges for student satisfaction in relation to studying higher education in a college.

Because we understand that it can be difficult to combine study with work and family commitments, our extensive range of student resources are designed to help you succeed. Finance & loansThe fees for courses vary according to the source of government funding. The following is a brief guide to where you can find out more information.

Don’t forget, you can speak to our Student Advisers on: 0151 551 7777 for further information about the grants available. Please note, they are not financial advisers and cannot advise you about your individual financial circumstances.

Degrees, Foundation Degrees, HNC, HND, Certificate in Education or PGCE programmes

You can apply for a student loan before you have a confirmed college or university place. To get your student finance in place for the start of term, you will need to apply by the Spring 2014 deadline.

Full-time studentsThe main sources of student funding for degrees, foundation degrees and HND programmes are:

• Tuition Fee Loans

• HE Maintenance Loan

• HE Maintenance Grant

Most students will be able to take out a Tuition Fee Loan for the full cost of their course; these loans are repayable after you leave your course and you start earning at least £21,000 per annum.

The Government offers HE Maintenance loans (for living expenses) to all eligible students. These loans are repayable after you leave your course and you start earning at least £21,000.

Eligibility for HE Maintenance grants (for living expenses) is based on household income and you don’t have to pay these grants back.

Part-time studentsMost part-time students will be able to apply for a student loan to pay for their course fees, subject to the course being at least 25% equivalent of a full-time course. This means that you will need to complete your course in no more than four times the amount of time it would take you to complete if you were studying full-time.

The maximum annual Tuition Fee Loan that is available to part-time students is £6,750 and is repayable when you leave your course and start earning at least £21,000 per annum.

Previous study

You won’t normally be eligible for a tuition fee loan if you already hold a qualification equal to or higher than the one you intend to study for.

For further details about Student Finance, visit: www.gov.uk/browse/education.

Disabled Students’ Allowance

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) can help with extra costs you may have in relation to your course as a direct result of a disability, long term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty. The level of any DSA award will depend on an individual needs assessment – visit the Student Loans Company website for more details: www.practitioners.slc.co.uk/products/disabled-students%27-allowances.aspx

Visit: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information to help you apply now.

Please note, this guidance was correct at time of going to print, but funding guidelines may change. Visit: wmc.ac.uk/higher-education for the latest information.

Are you aged 24 or over and you want to study an Access to Higher Education Diploma, a Level 4 Certificate or Diploma, or a Higher Apprenticeship?

You can apply for the new 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to pay for the costs of your course. This new loan system replaces the government funding which supported a number of qualifications in the past. You will only start to repay this loan when you leave your course and start earning £21,000 per annum.

If you successfully complete your Access to Higher Education course and you subsequently progress onto and complete a HNC/D, Foundation Degree or Degree course, your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan fees on the Access programme will be waived. You will still have to pay for the HNC/D, Foundation Degree or Degree course fees/loans.

Are you an overseas student? Please contact our International Office for information on fees – call: 0151 551 7777.
