Being a huge cricket fan, Brad, who now lives in Sydney, gives us his thoughts on the World Cup and Sri Lanka's chances of winning the Cup for a second time. Taking a look at the present Sri Lankan unit, one wouldn't be surprised if we win the World Cup, simply based on the combination we have - experi- ence and youth. The great Aravinda De Silva should be commended for the well-bal- anced squad he has picked. In my opinion there are eight players who MUST play in all the matches if we are to take the Cup. The dashing opener, Dilshan, the two world class batsmen, Mahela and Sanga, our quality young all-rounders, Mathews and Perera, and the tight, varied and dangerous bowling unit of Murali, Malinga and Kulasekara - prob- ably the best bowling attack Sri Lanka has ever had. The bowling department can fox any team. Tactics - straight forward - the openers should set the stage by dominating in the first 10 overs. Mahela and Sanga both, or at least one of them, MUST bat right till the end of our innings in all the matches, and Matthews and Perera should be given the freedom to attack at any cost, while Tharanga, and in particular, Samaraweera, should bat as the anchor - to hold one end. The seniors should take responsibility and not throw their wickets but play solid cricket. The role played by both Aravinda and Arjuna, in the '96 World Cup, is a perfect example of what should be expected from our seniors. The way Mahela batted in Hambantota against Canada made it quite clear that he means business. No matter what the opposi- tion is, that's the attitude Sri Lanka needs and, importantly, that's the attitude our players have - that's why we can win the World Cup again. B ritney Spears is reportedly set to release the second single from her forthcoming 'Femme Fatale' this week. The American pop singer, whose seventh studio album is set to hit shelves on March 29th 2011, is reportedly releasing the album's second sometime this week. It has been rumoured that Spears would release a follow-up single to 'Hold It Against Me' before the album hits shelves and, accord- ing to the website MusicRooms.net, an insider at Jive Recordings has confirm that a new track will be available from this week. They suggest it could be the Ke$ha penned song 'Till The World Ends' although they also mention the track 'I Wanna Go', which produc- er Dr Luke recently posted a clip of on Twitter. Anticipation for 'Femme Fatale' has been building for several months now and Spears recently promised fans "a morning to remem- ber" to mark the release of the new record, announcing plans for a special Good Morning America performance on March 29th, 2011. Speaking in a taped segment on Good Morning America, on February 28th, 2011, the singer announced the exclusive show, saying, "I'm excited to tell you on Tuesday morning, March 29, I'll be performing for the first time ever in a special concert in San Francisco's historic Castro district on 'Good Morning America.' And I promise you it'll be a morning to remember. See you soon!" She last performed on the show, back in December 2008, on the same day that she released her album 'Circus'. Britney's 'Hold It Against Me' became a commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland and New Zealand. I t's just impossible to count the number of cricket songs that have been released by Sri Lankan artistes in connection with the World Cup cricket, now in full swing in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Buy what is so amusing is that most of these cricket songs have been given the tag, ICC World Cup theme song/official song, etc. There's only one official anthem, and that's the song one sees regularly on the screen during match play, or whenever the World Cup is being advertised. Star Indian musicians, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, are responsible for the official theme song for the World Cup - 'De Ghuma Ke'. And right now, this particular song is the rage, and I won't be surprised if it becomes an awesome hit in the discos as well. Now how did this trio get about creating such a catchy song! According to Shankar, they were contemplating on the approach they should take: Should it be an anthem like theme, or should it be a dance song! "We then thought we should go a little bit the colloquial way" - a street feel which they felt would stand out from the regular kind of cricket and sport anthems.” 'De Ghuma Ke' is aimed at tran- scending the boundaries of language, and being synonymous with the excitement and the massive event appeal that the World Cup brings to cricket fans across the globe. According to Loy, the whole idea was to make the song travel and reach many people so that they all can absorb it and react to it. There are three versions of 'De Ghuma Ke' - Hindi, Bangla and Sinhala - and this is to ensure that the fans in the host nations can react to it. The Hindi version, sung by Shankar and Diya Kumar, is a block- buster of a track and just the right choice for cricket lovely cricket! Ehsaan says the catch phrase for the song has been taken from the streets of the subcontinent and rep- resents all what it takes to win a match. 'De Ghuma Ke' is certainly a mod- ern-sounding song, with a very con- temporary beat. It's catchy and has a mainstream appeal. These are the kind of songs that we need to work on as anthems, or as theme songs. Most of the cricket songs, churned out locally, are of very poor quality - both lyrics and music wise. Just read some of the comments on YouTube and you'll know what I mean. A couple of weeks ago, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had to step in and ban the airing of a World Cup song, performed by a Sri Lankan artiste. The song, according to the govern- ment, makes derogatory references to defending champions, Australia, as well as earthquake-hit New Zealand, The President had heard the Sinhala and Tamil mixed song when he was in Hambantota, to watch Sri Lanka play their opening match against Canada, and felt that it was in bad taste.
