Please think about asking family members or friends as they are able to assist as well. For those of you who have never worked, it’s fun and easy! Please keep us in mind next season. Thank you!

The success of this year was due to your gift of time & commitment!
Every five years, the federal government issues new the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Below are some
highlights from the new guidelines for 2015-2020, issued in January 2016.
Dietary Fat Limits on total dietary fat have been removed. The old guidelines stated that total fat should
make up no more than 20-35% of total daily calories. Keeping saturated fat (largely found in cheese, butter,
whole milk and fatty meat cuts) to less than 10% of total calories is still recommended.
Cholesterol The limit on cholesterol, previously 300 milligrams per day, was removed. Eating less high
cholesterol foods will help you to lower saturated fat intake.
Fruits and Vegetables The average American consumes 2 ½ servings of fruits and vegetables daily. We need
5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. To work on increasing fruits and vegetables, fill half your lunch and
dinner plate with these colorful foods.
Salt It’s time to cut back on salt. This means no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. That works
out to be about 1 teaspoon of table salt. Over 75% of dietary sodium comes from eating packaged and restaurant
foods. At restaurants look for meals prepared without salt or ask if the food can be prepared without adding salt.
Choose unsalted snacks like fruit or vegetables. Look for “low sodium”, or “no salt added” pretzels, nuts or chips.
Sugar There is now a recommended limit on added sugar. That number is no more than 10% of your daily
caloric intake. It’s important to point out this does not include the sugar consumed from natural sugars like fruits,
vegetables and dairy products.
These guidelines are based on a 2,000 calories daily diet. Of those calories, no more than 200 should come from
added sugar. That breaks down to about 50 grams of sugar per 2,000 calories. See the chart below for a sample
of added sugar in foods.
Added Sugar Chart
These are the highlights from the federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Guidelines are just that, guidelines. I believe most people know how to eat well. Common sense will go a long way. Everything in moderation. A complete look at the new guidelines can be found at http://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015/guidelines/
