Remembrance Sunday isRemembrance Day this year

As the custodians of Remembrance, TheRoyal British Legion calls on the nation tounite in commemorating RemembranceSunday.  Pictured here are some of thedignitaries that were at RemembranceSunday in previous times.  This year WisbechTown Council will be again represented aswill many other organisations throughoutthe town and district - on the eleventh hourof the eleventh day of the eleventh monthto mark the signing of the Armistice, on 11thNovember 1918, to signal the end of WorldWar One, the guns of the Western Front fellsilent after more than four years continuouswarfare.

Remembrance Day is on 11 November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and womenwho were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known asArmistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to11 November. This year this falls on Remembrance Day. Special services are held at war memorials andchurches all over Britain.  Ours will be at the memorial gardens at the mouth of the Crescent.

Since this year is very special as they both fall on the same day,  we will remember them - and we inviteyou to join us.

The Kenya ExpeditionOn Wednesday 11 July, twenty two youngsters from Wisbech Grammar School set out on an expedition toKenya.  On Wednesday 8 August they returned having had the experience of a lifetime.  Amongst themwere Alice  (daughter of former Mayor Nick Meekins), and Stuart (son of Town Clerk Erbie Murat).

During their month they spent time at CAYA repairing fences around the conservation area within theprotected wildlife sanctuary.  They also went to DIAWNI BEACH where they were involved with marinewildlife conservation and did their PADI open water diving certificates. During their time at TSAVO theywent on a photographic safari and helped with wildlife conservation.  And at MUHAKIA they worked withthe local community to prepare the foundations of a kitchen; dig a grey water well; and work with thechildren.

Stuart writes, ‘Digging the grey water well was, for me, the most rewarding.  With a great deal of hardwork, application and team work, we were able to help George, one of the local men, to dig a well thatwould take all the water from the washing up, washing machines and showers (not sewage) - and filter itto produce water that could be used to irrigate and raise edible crops.’

Alice writes, ‘I certainly look at the world a little differently now; most notably, considering I saw manypeople living in dreadful poverty, I do not remember ever seeing one face that was not smiling.    Perhapsthe best experience I had was one afternoon teaching in an incredibly poor primary school; the childrenthere worked from about 6am until 6pm, often going without food or water all day, as they came fromlarge families with little or no income. I had a grade 7 English class of about 70 students, aged 13 – 20, allof whom were very eager to learn and, it transpired, were very enthusiastic singers!’

A heartfelt thank you goes from them and the other young people from Wisbech Grammar School to MissForbes and Mr Williams who went with them on the trip, and to all the help and support they receivedfrom family, friends and other fundraisers who helped them get there.

Warning over bike theftsPOLICE are urging cyclists to take security precautions when leaving their bikesfollowing a spate of thefts. Many of the bikes stolen were left unsecured outside shopsor in gardens. Crime reduction officer Julie Hanrahan said: "It only takes a few minutesfor a bike to be ridden away by a thief so my message would be, ‘If you value it, lock it,don’t lose it’. "More than half of all bicycle thefts take place at the owner’s property.Simple crime prevention methods can lessen the chance of having a bicycle stolen.

"It may seem like there are lots of things to think about when locking a bike but onceyou get into the habit you will be able to lock your bike within seconds and it will be

well worth the trouble.”Cyclists are urged to:

Secure removable parts. Lock both wheels and the frame together.Take smaller parts and accessories that can be removed with tools with you.

Make the lock (and chain, if used) and bike harder to manoeuvre when parked – to stop thieves smashing the lock open.

Keep the lock (and/or chain) away from the ground. Keep the gap between the bike and lock small. Never leave the lock lying on the pavement – a lock can be sledge hammered easily

when it is resting on the ground. Locks can also be picked, so face the lock towards the ground (but

not resting on it) so it can’t easily be turned upwards for picking. Register you cycle for free at www.immobilise.com Keep a detailed description of the cycle, make, model, frame number,

colour and any distinctive markings. Mark the bike using a clearly visible and secure marking in two

separate places.

Anyone with information about bike theft should contact policeon 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111
