Visiongain believes Carrier Ethernet, fibre, and high-capacity microwave are still in an early deployment stage with huge potential for market growth. Current trends in backhaul deployments include the growth of backhaul on Ethernet instead of legacy circuit switched (E1/T1). Operators are gradually replacing the legacy backhaul components with Ethernet. Ethernet is a cheaper and flexible option for backhaul compared to the traditional technologies. Mobile backhaul is one of the strongest growth segments for carrier Ethernet. Microwave-based wireless backhaul is also gaining traction as the most cost effective solution for delivering higher capacity in the cellular market. Merger and acquisition activities underscore the growth curve of the mobile backhaul market. Mobile backhaul market will continue to expand, along with new solutions and techniques that will be introduced to the market to address challenges facing operators. 4.6.2 Mobile Backhaul Equipment Submarket Forecast Summary 2014-2024 Table 4.12 Mobile Backhaul Equipment Market Revenue Forecast 2014-2024 ($ billion, AGR %, CAGR%, Cumulative) 201420152016201720182019202020212022202320242014-2024 Rev($bn)7.67.827.998.188.48.7399.449.599.7810.296.7 AGR (%) 2.92.22.42.73.93.14.91.62.04.4 CAGR (%) 2014 -1916.2%2019 -249.6% CAGR (%) 2014 -2412.8% Source: Visiongain 2014 Page 102 Www.visiongain.comPage 102 Wireless Infrastructure Market 2014-2024: Wi-Fi, WiMax, 3G, HSPA+ and LTE 7. Expert Opinion 7.1 Redline Communications The following interview was conducted in February 2014. Visiongain would like to thank Duval Yeager, AVP of Product Marketing for Redline Communications for participation in this interview. 7.1.1 Redline Communications Wireless Infrastructure Offerings Visiongain: Please give us a little background about your company and your position in the wireless value chain. Redline: Redline Communications creates powerful wide-area wireless networks for the worlds most challenging applications and locations. Redline has focused on the requirement for industrial-grade networks used for mission-critical applications. Our systems are installed in the deserts of the Middle East, the rain forests of South America and the frozen Alaskan slopes; they are used by oil and gas companies to manage their oilfields, by militaries for secure battlefield communications, by municipalities to remotely monitor highways, utilities and other infrastructures, and by telecom service providers to deliver fiber-replacement services. 7.1.2 Key Trends & Developments in the Wireless Infrastructure MarketVisiongain: What would you say are the key trends and recent developments in the wireless infrastructure ecosystem and why? Redline: There have been three big developments that have enabled new growth for the wireless infrastructure market. 1.Systems now have much greater range and capacity than ever before. This means that larger geographical areas can be covered with fewer wireless base stations. This is particularly important in outdoor industrial networks where the single largest CAPEX item is radio tower installation to cover large rural areas. Many companies are finding that projects where were not financially feasible previously can now be afforded because the tower infrastructure cost is many times lower. 2.Low power chipsets and efficient radio transmitters allow for systems with very low power consumption.Todays long range transport radio can be powered by the PoE port Page 118 Www.visiongain.comPage 118 Wireless Infrastructure Market 2014-2024: Wi-Fi, WiMax, 3G, HSPA+ and LTE 8.7 Cisco Table 8.6 Ciscos Products / Services (Division, Product, Specification) ProductSpecification Edge Networks: Broadband Cisco Core Networks Femtocell Cisco Carrier Ethernet Unified RAN Backhaul Wireless Mesh unlicensed Wi-Fi For optimizing video and mobile service delivery. Cisco IP/MPLS core routing solutions Source: Cisco, Visiongain 2014 8.7.1 Analysis Cisco remains one of the biggest and most trustworthy networking gear makers for the wireless industry and governments across the globe. The company followed the strategy of growth via acquisitions and acquired several companies over the years in order to remain competitive. Cisco needs to focus on product innovation and should aggressively target the emerging markets where there is maximum growth. In the first quarter of 2014, Cisco has reported 12.1 billion in revenues. 8.7.2 M&A Activity Cisco has also been relying on partnerships and alliances to increase its position and market share in the wireless industry such as ZTE. However, the company was forced to curtail its partnership with ZTE after an internal investigation into allegations that ZTE broke US sanctions by selling Cisco networking gear to Iran. Cisco and ZTE had partnered since 2005 as an effort to develop business opportunities in China and the Asia Pacific region. The partnership expanded about five years ago when Cisco began viewing ZTE as a means to combat Huawei, who had been beating Cisco in emerging markets by offering significantly cheaper products.
