2 │DESIGN I.Q. WINTER 2015

Spring has arrived, and with it the IIDA Illinois Board has a lot to share with our Members! The 10th year of STITCH was a massive success! The event celebrated the past decade with a STITCH In Time thanks to a very hard working planning committee. The event was held at the historic House of Blues and hosted close to 600 attendees from the interior design and architecture community in Chicago. With the lights dazzling and the music blaring, 23 masks walked the runway to benefit the Illinois Interior Design Coalition (IIDC). We could not have pulled this off without our IIDA IL Partner support and the dedication from all of the design teams and sponsors - thank you!

In other big news, IIDA IL Leaders attended Capitol Day on Wednesday, March 18th, with IIDC.We spent the morning running from the offices of Senators’ to the House of Representatives’ convincing them to vote “YES!” for Bill 1270, the Design Practitioners Act. It was an invaluable experience; one that will certainly go down in history should the Bill pass. With over 80 people in attendance, we made a very apparent stand. However, we could still use your help. We urge the rest of our Members to visit our website and send a letter to your personal representatives, encouraging them to vote “YES!” for the Bill as well. Power is in numbers, and all of you can make a difference!

Have you heard that we’re having a birthday?! On August 26, 2015, we are turning the big2-0! To celebrate, we issued our very own Members Only PIN IT Design Competition. We are looking for you to design our commemorative 20th anniversary pin. Submissions must be posted to Instagram with the hashtag #IIDAILturns20. Deadline for entry is April 15, 2015 and the IIDA IL Board will take a vote a week later on the winner. The winner will be announced at our celebratory Annual Meeting in June. Be on the lookout for the Save-The-Date!

As we begin to shift into a new season, our Board is changing as well. In July, you will see some new faces, as well as some old ones in new positions. Despite the changes, as aChapter, we will remain unified and continue to offer you fantastic programs, events, and valuable reasons to be an IIDA IL Member.

Sincerely,

2

A STITCH in Time: Celebrating Masks Through the Decades

STITCH, the IIDA Illinois Chapter’s second largest annual event, was a success with nearly 600 attendees and 23 mask entries at the House of Blues. The theme was turning back the clock, honoring a decade of imaginative fashion, strutting the runway.

Design firms paid tribute, toasting Stitch’s 10th Anniversary on Thursday, February 12th, with a night of merriment, music and masks through the decades. Design firms chose a decade to draw inspiration from, whether past, present, or future.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEHARRINGTON ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION WITH KLISE MANUFACTURING

CHICAGO, IL (February 24, 2015) –Harrington College of Design recently teamed up with Klise Manufacturing, to host “Competition Studio,” a design competition where students were exposed to a hypothetical ‘real world’ design problem. On Thursday, February 12th the winners were announced and included Kefira White (1st place), Goeun Kim (2nd place) and Jordan Fons (honorable mention).

Led by class instructor John Kelley, each student received parameters for a space and was required to submit a single room design for a luxury hotel bar/restaurant by creating a “trim package” using either existing design patterns from Klise’s custom design catalog or creating new lineal wood profiles or metalwork designs.

“This year’s student design challenge at Harrington was one of the most memorable competitions I’ve been involved in. The students’ level of enthusiasm, creativity and attention to detail far surpassed anything I had anticipated,” explains Phil Tomasello, National Sales Manager, Klise Manufacturing.

“I was very impressed that the design program for this competition was based on a possible real world scenario,” adds Mark Allen of MLGM Architects who designed the project. “Overall, the students created evocative and realistic solutions especially given the abbreviated project timeline and extensive program requirements and I think that speaks highly not only of the professors involved, but also of the overall quality of the Harrington College design program.”

Harrington College of Design an institution of higher learning is committed to creating the next generation of design professionals to lead and serve the global community. Harrington has been a member of Chicago’s design and higher education communities since 1931 and seeks to foster an environment that maximizes students’ intellectual and artistic potential. Harrington offers associate’s degrees in digital photography; bachelor’s degrees in interior design, commercial photography, and graphic design; and master’s degrees in interior design and communication design.

BeSPACE

Dramatic. Fluent. Sophisticated.

BeSPACE, by JSI, combines bent plywood with upholstery details to create an inviting offering. This seating and caseworks line was designed for the places between private and public spaces. BeSPACE fits open office environments and can transition into private offices with lounge furniture.

Freestanding and modular units have the same light scale design, which includes elevated seating to highlight the metal legs, and bent plywood to transition between elements. Create the look of continuous components by utilizing the design of the horizontal plywood base and bent top surfaces. Units seamlessly join to create a flowing environment.

This comprehensive offering features freestanding and modular lounge seating pieces, ottomans, pods, media cabinets and credenzas. Benches and lounge pieces available in varied sizes and can be specified with full back, half back, backless, arms, chaise arms or armless. Add wood or glass tables for another element.

Radiused angles of 120° give visual uniformity to seating units, ottomans and caseworks pieces. Credenza tops also feature waterfall horizontal height changes of 120°. Integrated seat cushions on credenza units highlight the contoured detail of molded plywood. Door, drawer and open shelf credenza options allow users to configure storage units to meet their needs.

In the distance, a cresting swell breaks the horizon. Boards align and begin to propel forward in anticipation of the ride ahead on this wall of water. As if floating on air, we chase this ideal to take our minds off a thousand different things, becoming one with the wave, and ultimately, the world.

Surf-Inspired Design Shapes the Floor Plane

Originating in Polynesia and embraced by Hawaiian culture, the act of surfing was considered a spiritual and ritualistic part of daily life, a way to connect with nature. Eventually reaching the West Coast, the surfing phenomenon became a counter culture in post-war California.

Designed by Susan Fitzgerald, the Kai collection from Milliken pays homage to the classic mid-century American surf culture. The series of graphic designs incorporates fluid shapes that harmoniously transition from dense to dissipating, much like the incoming ocean tide.

Three patterns interpret iconic symbols of the surfing culture with a range of scales, textures, and treatments.

• Tapa, inspired by traditional Polynesian bark cloth fabric, provides a small-scale, near solid pattern.

• Nalu, meaning ‘to surf,’ features a mid-scale wood grain aesthetic inspired by the woodie wagons surfers often drove to the California shore.

• Fin, inspired by the fin of a surfboard, offers a bold statement piece with optional color vibes, which allow a swell of multi-color customization in a standard collection.

The mid-century aesthetics of Kai are modernized through industry-leading sustainable qualities. A PVC-free cushion backing extends the first life of the carpet, and the collection is carbon neutral*. Additionally, Kai carries an Environmental Product Declaration, Health Product Declaration, Declare label, and is certified to NSF 140 Gold/Platinum.

Organic patterns with color freedom invite designers to carve unique interior environments. Which direction will the tide take you? The question is an adventure within itself.

*The Milliken family of companies is a carbon-negative manufacturer certified by the Leonardo Academy Cleaner and Greener® Program.

Ceramic tile continues to reign as one of the most favored design staples in the floor covering industry because of its performance, design versatility, color options and aesthetic quality, and demand in the commercial market is on the rise. This is largely spurred by the use of tile as a low maintenance and sustainable flooring option in office, healthcare, hospitality, education and retail settings. Tile trends in this segment are often driven by the primary concerns of owners, including installation costs, maintenance and safety. To help you navigate the tile specification process, following are some points to consider from the experts at Daltile.

Why Tile? One of the key factors that has traditionally limited growth in the tile category is the installed cost, as tile is among the most expensive floor coverings. However, the stunning beauty of tile made possible by cutting-edge printing technologies and innovations in sizes and decoration is offsetting that barrier. Today, the tile industry has the manufacturing capabilities to create the most stunning visuals in the history of our products. This beauty, coupled with a longer product lifecycle, performance attributes and ease of maintenance is making people willing to spend a little bit more on tile.

Maintenance & SafetyBecause of the high-traffic nature of commercial spaces, it is important to select products that are both slip-resistant and easy to maintain. For that reason many designers are recognizing the value of porcelain and ceramic tile over time.

As a manufacturer, Daltile has several products that were designed with slip-resistance in mind, making it an ideal solution for commercial spaces. New from the Daltile brand, is the Industrial Park ColorBody™ Porcelain collection featuring StepWise™, a breakthrough in solutions-based technology to meet evolving commercial industry standards. Even in heavy commercial applications, this patent-pending technology combines slip resistance with superior cleanability to provide long-lasting beauty and performance.

Providing a dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) that is among the highest in the market, (.68<) Industrial Park can be used in a variety of unprecedented applications, including interior ramps. The collection includes a cove base accent that creates a seamless transition from tile to trim. This coordinating cove base is ideal for regions with building codes that require a sanitary trim.

Quick-service restaurants are also looking for fashionable options when designing spaces. With the advancements of digital printing technologies, tile designs are practically limitless, while still delivering anti-slip and other performance properties. For that reason, we are seeing more restaurants selecting tile.

Design TrendsOne of the most dominant trends in the commercial space is the use of large format tile. We’ll continue to see larger and larger sizes being used, as manufacturing capabilities become even more sophisticated. We also anticipate the various shapes of tile will continue to evolve. Rectangular sized tile in both floor and wall applications continue to be extremely popular, specifically, long, linear plank sizes.

Large, thin panels such as Daltile’s SlimLite™ collection have also been gaining traction in the commercial marketplace. Thin tile allows you to design with the beauty of tile in places where its weight and thickness traditionally limited your options, specifically the wall.

At Daltile, we always champion the best solutions for our cus-tomers to meet their needs as commercial industry standards are changing. From safety, to sanitation requirements, we want our customers to have access to products that go above and beyond the standards, delivering not only performance and function, but also beauty. To view all of Daltile’s commercial product offerings, visit www.daltile.com.

IIDC Town hall Meeting at the Merchandise Mart to educate about the Illinois Design Practitioner Act

In January at the IIDA Headquarters in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, four panelists addressed interior designers, architects and students in the field regarding the Illinois Design Practitioner Act, a practice act set to enter the Illinois state senate in 2015 and state house in 2016. The panel, organized and moderated by VP of Advocacy of IIDA IL, Dan Bassano, Perkins+Will, included Tom Dillon, attorney at law with McFadden and Dillon in Chicago and general counsel to IIDC; Emily Kluczynski, director of advocacy, Public Policy and Legislative Affairs at IIDA Headquarters in Chicago; Jeff K. Liggett, designer and architect of Jeffrey K. Liggett and Associates, LLC: and John Scott, designer and president of Keevan Sadock Design and ASID Illinois Chapter president.

The purpose of the town hall that had over 100 attendees was educating the legal recognition aims to elevate the profession of interior design, defending it from those outside the profession who misunderstand it as just “decorating.” With events like this one, IIDA encourages its members to incorporate advocacy for this legislation into their everyday conversations, rather than just focusing their efforts on legislators and policy-makers.

Currently in the U.S., designers are only allowed to stamp and seal their own drawings and hold permits in Nevada, Florida, Georgia, Colorado, Louisiana, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Illinois would be the first state in the Midwest to pass such a law, considering that Chicago is a hub for design in the Midwest. To get more involved IIDA IL encourages people to join IIDC, which will help them stay informed, and to follow IIDC on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Dan Bassano will also be joining advocates on “Capitol Day” on March 18, when a group of designers will travel to Springfield, IL, to address policy-makers and make their concerns known. CEU: Power of Place

The key to employee engagement is bringing people together with a sense of purpose in a place that will help them achieve their best work. However the notion of place often goes overlooked, but when the workplace is designed to be a destination there are substantial gains in engagement and productivity to be had. To achieve this a workplace must be not just a location to do work, but a place that balances collaboration with privacy, fosters cognitive, emotional, and physical wellbeing and offers choice and control.
