Greetings TX OK! My involvement with IIDA has spanned over a period of six years, and in that time I have had the ability to witness and be a part of the growth and development of the Texas Oklahoma Chapter. The changes haven’t happened automatically nor have they occurred overnight. It has been through an ever evolving process developed by its members and hardworking volunteers. Your creativity, compassion, and involvement are unmatched which is why I'm honored to serve as your Chapter President.

At the annual awards gala in August the Chapter was able to recognize excellently designed projects, highlight the volunteerism of its members, and recognize the outstanding efforts of its city centers. We were able to honor eight Design Excellence Award winners and seven honorable recipients. I should mention that one Design Excellence and one Honorable Mention award recipients were each student members, amazing! The Partner of Year award is the greatest way the Chapter can show its appreciation to a Chapter Partner that has gone above and beyond in its efforts for the Chapter and its City Centers. The Chapter also had the honor and privilege of presenting Haworth the Partner of the year award. The strength of the chapter is not its numbers; it is the heart and dedication of its volunteers. This year Daphne Yaunidis, Cari Johnson, Amanda Lee, Jessy Fuller, Stephanie Fallon, Jill Ibison Vessels, Karina Garza, and Inda Hahn all earned the rank of Chapter Volunteer of the Year. I hope that you all were able to view the full recap in the first ever Gala Publication. If not, please take a moment to check it out on the IIDA Texas Oklahoma webpage.

The past few months have been both exciting and interesting with regards to legislative activity in the state of Texas. The actions of the registered professionals have proven to be strong and unified and we were able to show ourselves in full force to the Sunset Committee during the public hearings. We were able to keep the professional and regulation of Registered Interior Designers intact, however legislative results and writings leave lingering questions from many of the members and registered professionals. Please check out the GRA section of the publication as it sheds light on these subjects.

Our Chapter is great because of the traits and skills of its members. You all are trend setters, leaders, creators, visionaries, and truly irreplaceable. Thank you for making the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter and its City Centers strong! The Chapter Board and I look forward to working with you for the rest of this year and into 2014.

It’s that time of year again…time to renew your IIDA Membership. As we all know, we wouldn’t have an organization without our members.

We want to thank each and every one of you for making IIDA who we are today, an organization of more than 13,000 design professionals in 33 Chapters globally! Be sure to log on to the IIDA website and renew so you don’t miss out on the great events coming soon to your City Center.

In the last couple of months each City Center in the Texas Oklahoma Chapter has hosted their annual “Sweet Deal” Membership Drive. Each City Center invited both members and non-members to enjoy food and drinks while they networked and learned about the benefits of IIDA.

NCIDQ Award

Congratulations to the Fall 2013 NCIDQ Award recipients.

The NCIDQ Award is for Members within the Chapter who have successfully passed all three sections and are employed with a company that does not provide full reimbursement provisions to their employees. Up to seven awards are given annually to cover the full cost of the NCIDQ Examination ($835 maximum) as well as exam preparation materials, classes, and travel. The reimbursements are given twice a year in coordination with the Spring and Fall NCIDQ Exam results. The Award is open to all IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Associate and Professional Members who have taken and passed the exam successfully and work for an employer that does not provide full reimbursement for passing the NCIDQ Exam. You are eligible for up to three years after exam completion to submit for the award.

ohn Czarnecki, Assoc. AIA, Hon. IIDA, is the editor in chief of Contract [contractdesign.com], a magazine for architects and interior design professionals focused on commercial interiors and architecture. In this role, he oversees the monthly magazine in print and online and its associated awards programs, including the Interiors Awards and the Best of NeoCon Awards. Prior to joining Contract in May 2011, he was senior acquisitions editor of architecture and design books at the publisher John Wiley & Sons for eight years. From 2000 to 2003, John was an associate editor for Architectural Record. He holds Masters degrees in both architecture and urban planning from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Appointed by 2014 AIA National President Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, John is the Chair of the AIA Convention Advisory Committee for the 2014 AIA National Convention to be held in Chicago.The Keynote Luncheon will take place at Student Conferece on Friday, February 21st. On October 3, 2013 the Texas Oklahoma Chapter hosted the IIDA Leaders Breakfast in Dallas at the Ritz Carlton Hotel where business leaders, interior designers and the industry came together to hear an inspirational message from the internationally recognized speaker, Todd Henry – author of The Accidental Creative . The event also recognized the outstanding achievements of our Honoree: Donna Vining, IIDA, and Executive Director of TAID (Texas Association for Interior Design) for her role in the continued development and protection of the Interior Design Profession in Texas and many other states. We are excited to announce that the Dallas Leaders Breakfast was sold out and raised approximately $20,000 for the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Education Fund – which annually awards (3) Tuition Reimbursement Scholarships and (1) Study Abroad Grant to IIDA Students within our Chapter. Thank you to our phenomenal committee and Co-chairs for another successful Leaders Breakfast: Cari Johnson, IIDA with Shaw and Jill Ibison, IIDA with Corgan Associates.

The volunteer committee of organizers for METROCON13 Expo & Conference is pleased to announce that the regional two-day trade show, which took place August 15 & 16, 2013, in Dallas, Texas, attracted over 2,500 interior designers, architects, facility managers, interior design

students, and other vital design industry members from 27 states. The budget-conscious event concentrates on featuring the latest in products, services and innovations for the Architecture & Design community, and it made some substantial strides in its 11th year.

On the technological side, METROCON debuted a show app for use on iTunes platforms, which allowed users to access event, CEU, and food & beverage schedules, as well as an Exhibitor directory, trade show floor plan, and shuttle routes for area hotels. Additionally, for the first time the organizers were able to offer Exhibitors the option to sign up for lead retrieval services using a smart device app, rendering equipment rental unnecessary and providing Exhibitors with Attendee information within one business day after the show.

For the first time METROCON added a mobile display unit area, supplementing the 400 10’x10’ expo booths and making it possible for Exhibitors to show under 274 vendor names. Booths sold out nine days ahead of the official close, and if 12 booths plus the mobile display unit area had not been added for 2013, booths would have sold out 21 days ahead of the official close. By the time the show took place, there were 17 vendors on a list waiting for 18 booths.

Overall, the support for the show – which serves the corporate, healthcare, hospitality, institutional, multifamily, residential, and retail sectors – was inspiring. In less than 90 days, 98% of event sponsorships sold, and in less than two months, 112 CEU presentations were submitted, allowing the organizers to offer 5,400 seats in 54 CEUs and providing Attendees the option to earn up to nine CEUs over two days while still providing eight hours on the trade show floor.

Due to the dedication of the volunteer planning Committee made up of equal members from the Texas Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA and the Texas Chapter of ASID, as well as the generosity of 44 show sponsors – including Landmark Sponsor Business Interiors by Staples and Media Sponsor Design Guide Texas – prices for both exhibitors and attendees are extremely low relative to similar events around the USA.

The Annual Awards Gala was held on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Omni Hotel in Dallas, Texas. Awards were given in seven categories: Corporate, Healthcare, Hospitality, Institutional/Educational, Retail, Government and Sustainability. Also presented were the Chapter Volunteers of the Year, City Center Volunteers of the Year, City Center Underwriters of the Year, Chapter Sponsor of the Year Award and the highly coveted Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is the highest honor IIDA can bestow upon a design firm. The award is granted only to firms that have consistently contributed to the highest aspiration of the profession, community and the IIDA while remaining committed to enhancing the quality of life through excellence in Interior Design.

Over the past year Registered Interior Designers have been through quite a bit in the Government and Regulatory Affairs world. We fought our way through a TBAE Sunset

review together with some ups and some downs. However, the amount of action from Texas RIDs and our supporters seemed to surprise the Sunset Review Committee during the public hearings. I believe your efforts to CALL YOUR REPS, SHOW UP, and BE HEARD, as well as contribute financially to those who represent our cause, is what ultimately guided them to keep the profession of Interior Design regulated. So HUGE and continued gratitude goes to all who assisted TAID, IIDA, and all of our RIDs that campaigned over the year. Yet the legislative results have left many with questions about the resulting issues of fingerprinting, grandfathering, and upcoming legislation:

FINGERPRINTINGBeginning in January of 2014 all incoming and renewing TBAE registrants (not just RIDs) will be required to undergo a one-time fingerprint-based national criminal history check. There is a one-time administration fee of $42 that is paid to the vendor directly. I completed my session in October and I found it to be pretty simple. I followed the instructions provided by TBAE online, selected the center closest to me, booked an available time, and filled out my form to print and bring with me. Though it was an easy process I would recommend starting it 4-6 weeks prior to your renewal deadline (last day of your birth month) so that you have a cushion for available timeslots at the center and each organization has a few weeks to process the request.

TBAE’s website has a step-by-step guide for in-state and out-of-state registrants and a link to a FAST Pass form to bring with me. There have been some negative reaction to this requirement over the past few months. I think the TBAE Chairman Alfred Vidaurri, Jr. might have summed it up best: “Although none of us really care for the cost, inconvenience or intrusion of fingerprinting, it has become standard in recent years for most occupational or professional licensing. These days, and in some cases for the past several years, fingerprints are required of

Texas GRA Updatedoctors, pharmacists, professional engineers, teachers, nurses, and many others in the positions of ‘trusted professional advisors’.” We are custodians of the resources our client’s resources put towards our professional work so we should be holding ourselves to similar standards of other professionals.

As a reminder registrants currently undergo a state-wide criminal background check but TBAE would not be aware if an applicant had offenses in other states. The new national check will reveal offenses such as bribing state officials, for example, even if they didn’t occur in Texas. As TBAE Executive Director Cathy Hendricks stated “the new national criminal history check system will uncover some of whose actions jeopardize the standards and reputation of the design professions, not to mention the health, safety, and welfare of the public.”

GRANDFATHERED RIDsIn the last session a bill was presented that requires RIDs with ‘grandfathered’ status 3 years to complete and pass the NCIDQ exam to maintain their registration. TAID lobbied against it for no examination requirements since most of those designers now have over 25 years of experience and 100 continuing education hours. But in the end, TAID successfully lobbied to extend the time frame to 4 years. The deadline to pass the exam to maintain credentials is now September 1, 2017.

If this affects you – you should know that you do NOT have to go back to school before taking the exam. If you’re in good standing with TBAE simply email exams@tbae.state.tx.us or call them at 512-305-9000 and they will set you up on TBAE’s end. There is no charge for this process – just provide your name, a valid email address, your date of birth, and state that you would like to be listed as eligible to sit for the NCIDQ exam. Then go through NCIDQ (http://www.ncidq.org/) to set up sitting for the exam. Don’t forget that you must pass ALL THREE sections of the exam before the deadline. Dallas-Fort Worth has been very active this Fall and things are only going to get bigger and better in the Spring! Through programs like our “Roaring 20’s” cocktail social and annual “Sweet Deal” membership drive, NCIDQ prep course and Open Plan Environment CEU, we have provided great opportunities to our members. More recently, we completed our third annual ZeroLandfill DFW upcycling event. For two consecutive weeks, we collected and upcycled over 1,500 pounds of unwanted material from the design community to the public. With the continuous support we have had from Corporate Floors and the design industry, we have been able to divert close to 75,000 lbs from the landfill over the last three years. We plan to have another ZeroLandfill collection in the Spring. We also joined forces with HDR for a project tour of their recently completed patient tower and expansion at the Baylor Regional Medical Center in Grapevine, TX. The evening was filled with great information and conversation and would not have been such a success without our underwriters, Armstrong and Dupont Corian. Our first ever Revolution Redesign event at Shoal Crossing Event Center was an evening Austin can be proud of! Giving back to families in need in the Austin area; design teams from several firms teamed up to compete in a white box challenge to create a unique room setting for families in need. Benefiting Social Design Alliance, this event was one of our most creative yet. A competition true to what we do, teams were challenged with reupholstering and refurbishing a piece of furniture, designing a rug, table & creating accessories to round out the space. The teams rooms WOWED the judges and guests who fell in love with the room settings were able to purchase certain pieces at the end of the evening with all proceeds going to the families in need. The evening was truly as special one and we look forward to seeing how next year unfolds. The Oklahoma City City Center Council has welcomed back 4 veteran members and 7 new faces for the 2013-2014 term. Along with fresh faces, comes fresh ideas. OKC kicked off the year by celebrating their Industry members at the Industry Roundtable which was

followed by a meet and greet between members and non-members prior to the Membership Drive. The City Center has hosted several successful CEU’s thanks to the generosity of our special event underwriters, Johnson Harris & Associates and Herman Miller | Workplace Resource. For 2014, OKC plans to offer more CEU’s geared towards health, safety and welfare to support OIDC and the GRA movement in OK. Planning is underway for our main event in 2014, Casino Party, which will take place in April – you won’t want to miss this! The Oklahoma City City Center has partnered with Youth Services of OK County for the 2013-2014 term. Youth Services provides a monthly update on the needs of the SKIL pantry which supplies meals to teens that are homeless and/or on their own. Council members have been collecting food items and bringing them to monthly council meetings and they are then delivered to Youth Services.

IIDA Houston City Center’s annual fundraiser, Art & Artifacts, was held on Friday, October 18th at The Marque in City Centre. The event, coordinated by underwriting Chair Margot Prestel raised thousands of dollars to help IIDA support its mission. Themed “Putting on the Ritz”,

the design competition involved members capturing the 1920’s in modern times through photography.

Upon arriving at the venue, guests were greeted by a posh red carpet and stunning backdrop. Once inside guests could choose from an endless spread of swag to accessorize their twenties inspired attire and were free to roam though the venue’s opulently decorated rooms. Featuring multiple rooms seemingly right out of a Fitzgerald novel, guest sipped on champagne garnished by classic rock candy while waiting to have a movie flipbook made as a token of their “ritzy” evening.

Some socialized while lounging in posh booths and opulent chaises. Others explored The Marque admiring the amazing photography that captured an era now gone yet still in evidence if you look closely. Still others were able to bid on a wide selection of donated products, gift certificates etc... When it was finally time to go home, they were sent away with chocolate cigars as a token of an evening that simply put, was “The Bees Knees”.

Our first CEU was in August at 1919 Bar talking about Healthy Work Environments sponsored by Humanscale and Surface Tech. We had 16 attendees!

Our next event was our Membership Drive, ‘Cupcake and Cocktails!’ We had the event

at Aloft and had 54 attendees. Our underwriters for the event sponsored 6 student memberships for 2014!

Our forum tour was hosted at RVK architects in October. The next CEU in November was sponsored by Haworth and was hosted by Wittigs Office Interiors.

November was a very busy month because we also had our Industry Round Table at Paloma Blanca, appropriately named ‘A Perfect Pair’. We had a great turn out and heard lots of great feedback from our industry members.Our largest event this year was San Antonio WinterFest on December 5th. We had this holiday festival at the Palladium Theater. Santa made an appearance with a photo booth, we had a silent and live auction, along with food and kid-friendly activities! We also had our second annual Christmas Tree Competition in which we auctioned off the trees.

Next year is another busy year with our Programs Tour kicking off in January at the new NUSTAR facility in San Antonio. Also, events to look forward to are TX OK Chapter Student Conference, San Antonio City Center volunteer day in March, and our special event Imagine That 2014!

The Tulsa City Center has been busy these past few months! We completed another successful Membership Drive at The Kitchen Ideas Showroom, where we were taught how to cook up some tasty appetizers by local chef Grant Vespasian.

But this event wouldn’t have been successful if it weren’t for the support from Jim Sedlacek with Interface. Thank you Interface for underwriting this event every year!

Along with the Membership Drive, we have hosted three CEU’s thus far as well as an American Olean manufacturing plant tour and CEU. Our CEU’s have covered everything from the new Dynamic Coefficient of Friction standards for tile to Private Office Research in the Legal Industry. Big thanks to Scott Rice, Steelcase, Crossville Tile, American Olean, and Sherwin Williams for their commitment to help our local designers continue to grow!

Coming up on December 5th, IIDA is partnering with Humanscale to present a CEU day! This new event will include a breakfast, lunch, and happy hour CEU where you can achieve 3 credits on Ergonomics all in one day.

Finally, IIDA is hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Oklahoma Interior Design Coalition. All the proceeds from this event will go towards their continued efforts to address the legislative issues confronting the Interior Design profession in Oklahoma. Megan Ebert, RID, IIDA, NCIDQ has been named an Associate at Kendall/Heaton Associates, Inc. in Houston, Texas. She joined the Interiors Department of KHA in 2010 and her projects range from corporate offices to retail spaces. Megan served as President of the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter in 2011-2012.
