Our Board Members !

Founding board member, JULIET BELMAS, has written, directed, produced and edited several short films about women in prison. Critics describe her work as subtle, yet harrowing as she juxtaposes both the confining artifice of modern life and the all too real loss of liberty experienced by women in conflict with the law and life amongst the free . After developing a longstanding“ ” career in cinematography in the Canadian film industry, Juliet is currently on sabbatical writing a memoir about her life experiences as a modern day renaissance womyn..As a lens based artist and a feminist, I visualize seeing more self-“

empowerment groups, like WMovers, who are willing to make a difference for themselves and their families through self-realization activities that

promote economic independence from patriarchal/colonial business models that depend on the government for privileges and lead to increasing opportunism and corruption amongst the masses.”

I, GUNARGIE O SULLIVAN, am the producer of a radio show called When Spirit Whispers which airs every monday' from 1 2 30 at Co Op radio. The show s focus is residential school survival- : ' stories, foster care in canada and how it relates to residential schools and it touches on Truth and Reconciliation. Last year I held an event called the Red Jam Slam where residential school survivors in the panel were asked to share their residential school stories along a healing journey story. It was amazing. I myself am a second generational survivor of Saint Michael s Residential' School in Alert Bay B.C. I have been producing radio programs for several years now and have been attending the National Community Radio Association conferences. I have been rallying community stations to take it

upon themselves to provide radio programs by the people of the territory that they broadcast from. The absence of our perspectives is rampent and that needs to change.

STACEY BONENFANT has lived in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside for 13 years, with her two sons. She is a member of Parents in Poverty committee, committed to lobbying BC's provincial government for increased welfare rates & systematic changes to improve the current quality of life for BC's most vulnerable. A member of the DTES Neighborhood Council committed to social justice in the DTES around gentri-fuck-ation. I am dedicated to help others find their voice. As a grassrooots community“

organizer, focusing on asset based outlook, WMovers is an ideal project for those living in marginlized situations. Through mentoriship and empowering womyn to recognize their potential, WMovers creates a caring, safe and

supportive atmosphere for Womyn to explore and express themslves while exploring careeer opportinuities. This is essential to build lives full of pride and confidence.”

Team Person of the Winter

Can you introduce yourself?

To begin, my name is Audrey. I am starting my 21st year of life, here, in Vancouver, 5000km away from my hometown, in Quebec.

Why did you join WMovers?

When I arrived in Vancouver, I found out about WMovers through a friend who`s been involved for the past year. After many inspiring conversations about the mandate of the company, I decided to join the team without hesitation. There are many reasons to travel 5000 kilometers to live in a completely unknown province, first of all the desire to learn with women that are knowledgeable, skilled, professional, hard workers and community oriented.

What was your previous work experience?

Mostly as a labour worker in farms and shops, where I'm reduced to a number to whom is paid a tiny amount of the accumulated profit.

Can you tell us more about your experience with WMovers?

I got involved quickly with the team, where I feel my strenghts and interests are recognized and valorized. Already it's so relieving to feel like you can work with people that care and understand the struggle to find safe and stable employment in the trade sector as a womyn.

My first training was highly successful, I felt empowered by the way everyone`s knowledge and experience could be shared to learn and gain new skills. The focus on team work, coordination and communication really helped me to feel confident in my abilities to accomplish the work in a professional and efficient way. My first moving experience was enriching on many levels, because we were moving a single mom and her three kids to a new, affordable and safe house, promising of a great future for their family life. The excitement in her eyes, the trust that was built between her and our team were the highlights of our day. The depth in the work we accomplish lays in the power to build networks of support in our communities and long-term relationships.

WMovers allows me to feel socially empowered, develop self-knowledge and self-thinking through the responsibilities and initiatives I take as a member of the team.

Would you like to share your vision for the upcoming year as part of the WMovers team?

As time passes, I can see the great opportunity to gain professional experience and specialize in landscaping. For me it s a privilege to be able to work outside and be’ surrounded by womyn that have gained the necessary skills to succeed; it really motivates me to keep going. Every season is a new challenge for WMovers, and I feel confident to take it on.

The Experience of building a house !

It’s November and we decide to build a house in a small community. The rainy season is on its way, the earth is muddy, and our tent is taking in water on all sides.

Day 1: Tam & I, under wide open blue skies, pull together bricks and boards and panels of plywood to lay our foundation. All day, as we work away pounding in nails, wedging in

blocks, leveling and measuring, these blue skies stay with us. We have prepared our collection of found 2x4 s; we took crowbars and hammers to remove nails and screws,’

lined them all up even on one side, then sorted them into their different lengths. Tam is plotting and planning and imagining as we sort; how many boards do we need? Where will

this one fit?

Tam is the mastermind of this project. She takes time to plan and calculate; she pauses to explain and show us; she takes moments to appreciate and admire what we make together; I feel empowered to work by her side. From the very beginning, she

committed to this project with her whole big heart; I m reminded of this every time I’ see her working under the rain and snow. I feel so lucky that this amazing woman will

always be present, in spirit, in the house that we built together.

That first night we finish up in the dark, with help from Beck and Charlotte. We jump and dance on our foundation to test its strength; we take the level to it and see that

it s perfectly flat; we stand under starry skies and admire our house.’

For two months, we all take moments, and hours, and sometimes days to tend to our house-to paint it, build up its walls, line it and insulate it. The day we put on the

roof, everyone is tired and pulled in different directions by responsibilities in our lives, but everyone is there, and under heavy rain and on top of muddy ground, we raise it. It

feels so good and it feels so right make this house together.

Now we have a house, a house built by our hands. We can do a lot with our hands; we can do a lot with our hearts. This house stands as a testament to our commitment to take care of each other, to encourage each other s creativity, to stand side by side’

and be stronger for it.

I ll sleep in this house tonight, sheltered from the rain and cold, protected by the’ strength of its strong walls, surrounded by the strength of the sisters who built it.
