Unique world-class terroirs

We are fortunate enough to own three of the top terroirs in the Eger wine region.

1000-year-old winemaking tradition

With the arrival of Christianity, French and Italian monks came to Eger and brought with them high-quality grape growing and winemaking expertise.

Uncompromising focus on quality

We planted varietals that easily adapted to the characteristics of the Eger wine region and they are farmed organically. These healthy and happy grapes are than gently turned into unique wines.

Nagy Eged (10 hectares - Grand Cru)Facing south-southwest, this steep-sloping site with unique exposure consists of limestone - laden soils, which contribute to a one of a kind mineral character to the wines.

Nyilasmár (8 hectares - Premier Cru)Blessed with a unique microclimate due to Lake Bogács, this site has soils rich in minerals, which result in distinctive, fine, fresh and fruit-packed wines. Comprised of granite/volcanic soils, it has a south- southwestern exposure.

Nagyfai (12 hectares - Premier Cru) Gently-sloping volcalic site, which is interspersed with rocks, produces well-balanced and rounded wines.

Kovács Nimrod Winery is situated in seven continuouscellars on the historic Verőszala Street in Eger.

Back in the 18th century there were hundreds of wine press houses, very similar to ours, which were erected above their representative cellars to handle the onsite processing of grapes.

After the grape juices had been fermented, wines were stored in barrels in the cool cellars below.

Guided by this tradition, we continue to make our wines in a similar way, while supported by 21st Century technology.

The history of Eger goes back to the 11th Century when the first king of Hungary, Saint Stephen established the first Bishoptry here.

In the 16th century the Fort of Eger withstood a major Turkish invasion (from which the legend of Bull’s Blood originates) and thus protected the entire region.

Starting from the 17th Century, the Church has played an important role in making Eger a major Baroque literary town.

Nowadays Eger is a charming mixture of old and modern architecture, shops and baths.

These wines are selected from our Grand Cru terroir, representing 10 hectars on the top of historic Nagy Eged hill, between 300 and 500 meters above sea level. Limestone - laden soils, steeply facing south! This terroir is gifted with a microclimate of hot days and cool nights, which produces fruit-driven, complex and mineral rich wines.

NAGY EGEDFURMINT 2011

This Furmint comes from Nagy Eged hill as a special gift from an extremely good year. It was fer-mented and aged in 225 and 500 liter barrels on lees for 8 months. It is a complex, gilt-colored wine, exhibiting pear and apricot flavors with limestone and flint overtones. It starts with a discrete and elegant aroma and opens into flavors of va-nilla, peach and toasted seeds, end-ing with a soft, pleasant and long finish. Only 2450 bottles were made.

GRAND BLEU 2011

This 100% Kékfrankos wine originates from the top of our Grand Cru Nagy Eged vineyard. Its dense color is accompanied by concentrated aromas of nutmeg, allspice, black cherry and tobacco. These characteristics linger on the palate exhibiting flavors of plum, black cherry and plain chocolate, fulfilled with balanced acids and silky tannins. Our Grand Bleu rewards us with a long and really refined finish that lingers on the pal-ate. This wine will age beautifully in the bottle for many years. Only 1877 bottles were made.

NJK 2009

The 2009 vintage of our flagship cuvée, is made out of traditional varietals from our Grand Cru Nagy Eged vineyard. It offers a complex succession of different flavors which include plum liquor, smoky raspberry and bramble, which are further complemented by aromas of allspice and tobacco. Only 3196 bottles were made.

These wines are selected from our Premier Cru Nyilasmár and Nagyfai terroirs, which are located in the village of Noszvaj. These wines owe their unique mineral compositions to the granite and volcanic laden soils, which combined with the microclimate of Bogács Lake culmilates in fresh, fruit-packed, balanced flavors.

MONOPOLEBATTONAGE 2012

Our 2012 Battonage Chardonnay is composed in a classical Burgundian style, expressing the unique character-istics of our Nyilasmár and Nagyfai terroirs. Fresh fruit flavors of pear and apple are complemented by light notes of buttery toasted oak, which are under-lined by the unique mineral composition of this wine. It was aged on lees in small French and Hungarian oak barrels, resulting in a Chardonnay that has an elegant freshness, vivid acids and a long harmonious finish. This wine is best ac-companied by poultry, pork, seafood or light pasta.

MONOPOLEPINOT GRIS 2012

This wine comes from our exclusive Monopole terroirs. Its golden color reflects its delicate ripened fruit, which experienced short maceration followed by an eight-month bar-rel aging. Its bouquet is sweet and mysterious, exhibiting the fragranc-es that are typical of elderflower, peach and tropical fruit. Display-ing a silky, rounded and affable aftertaste, this wine provides suc-cessful pairing with light dishes, fruit and desserts or can be appreci-ated on its own.

MONOPOLEPINOT NOIR 2011

The 2011 vintage is an excellent manifestation of the ripe fruit of the KNW’s Nagyfai and Nyilasmár Monopole terroirs. The Nyilasmár vineyard contributes to a spicy and full-bodied wine with its thin, stony and tuff soil, while the rocky brown forest soil of Nagyfai adds a pleasant and complex character to the wine. This Pinot Noir offers a complex succession of flavors ranging from bright raspberry to red current, while also displaying accents of toasted oak on silky tannins. It is delicate now, but will age beautifully in the bottle for many years to come.

MONOPOLERHAPSODY 2011

This 2011 vintage of the Monopole Rhapsody Bull’s Blood is exclusively selected from the ripe fruit of our Nagyfai and Nyilasmár Monopole terroirs. This highly concentrated wine is a blend of Kékfrankos, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is characterized by a nice garnet color with aromas of cranberry, ripe cherry and spicy oak. Similar flavors linger on the palate with a medium-body and a medium-long finish and soft tannins.

MONOPOLEKÉKFRANKOS 2012

This wine is made from grapes exclu-sively selected from KNW’s Nagyfai and Nyilasmár Monopole terroirs. Our Kékfrankos shows a deep ruby color that turns violet at the edges and leads with flavors of red fruit, cher-ry and red currant, and then merges into secondary flavors of dried apricot and violet. After spending 22 months in oak barrels, this wine results in a round and complex variety of flavors and aromas.

MONOPOLESUPERIOR 2011

Our Monopole Superior Bikavér is a unique blend of Kékfrankos, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. These five varieties were selected from our Mon-opole terroirs which merge harmoniously together, displaying elegance and balance. This wine has a beautiful deep-red hue and manifests aromas of sour cherry, plum, forest fruit and spices. These flavors then linger on the palate with a long subtle finish, which are owed to its pleasant tannins and acidic balance. This wine is delightful now, but will age beautifully in the bottle over many years time. Only 1380 bottles were made in this vintage.

MONOPOLE SYRAH 2011

The 2011 vintage of the Monopole Syrah is exclusively selected from the ripe fruit of our Monopole terroirs. The Nyilasmár vineyard faces southward and is charac-terized by thin, stony and tuff-based soil, which results in spicy full-bodied wines, while the rocky brown forest soil of the Nagyfai vineyard produces rich and com-plex flavors in our wines. Our Syrah 2011 developes characteristics of ripe black cherry and earthy notes, which merge with secondary flavors of sweet tobacco and leather. This well balanced wine displays a complex character through its silky tannins and delicate long finish.

EGRI STAR 2014

Egri Csillag (Star of Eger) is a blend whose components have been selected from the high-quality fruit which comes from different parts of the Eger wine region. It is composed of Welshriesling, which is characterized by its full body, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) its fruitiness and Leányka its complexity and herbal character and eventually, Chardonnay that makes this blend creamy and well-rounded. This excellent vintage offers a complex succession of different fruity flavors balanced by its vivid acids. This wine acknowledges genteel fragrances and aromas which makes it an excellent match with lighter dishes.

The wines of EGRI family are selected from varieties typical of Egri Terroirs, and made to be enjoyed everyday.

EGRI ROSÉ 2014

This refreshing Kékfrankos Rosé offers a succession of different fruity flavors, such as strawberry and raspberry, which allow for successful pairings with a variety of dishes while the wine can also be enjoyed at a warm summer night. The residual sugar in our Rosé makes it even more attractive.

EGRIBULL’S BLOOD 2009

Egri Bull’s Blood is one of the favorite blends of the Eger wine region. Our wine is composed of Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Offering a a nice bouquet with a complex succession of different fruity and spicy flavors. A great accompaniment of meat dishes or just to be enjoyed on its own.
