ETCS One Day Meeting - Genetic Interventions in Cell Culture; Technologies & Applications

Date: 1st April 2009 Venue: University College London

The European Collection of Cell Cultures (ECACC) in collaboration with the European Tissue Culture Society (ETCS) is presenting a one-day meeting on the recent developments in the technologies in genetic modifi cation of cells in culture and their application. Target audience: This one-day course is aimed at scientists in academic and commercial organisations who require an updated review of techniques for genetic manipulation of mammalian and insect cell lines in culture and their current application.

Content:The content will provide attendees with a current overview of gene transfer technologies in development and their use in drug discovery, clinical applications or studies in basic cell biology. Topics include:

• New transfection technologies (cationic liposomes and electroporation)

• Viral delivery technologies (Retrovirus, Lentivirus & Adenovirus) • New advances in Baculovirus systems• Genetic Knock-ins, Knock-outs and animal stem cells systems• Post-transcriptional silencing (siRNA) in cancer research• Precise genetic manipulation and regulation of transgene expression • Cell Immortalization• Cell line modifi cation for assay development for Drug discovery

(High-throughput screening)

NCPV Awarded European Funding to Expand Virus Collection

The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) has been established for 10 years and has steadily built-up a good reputation as an internationally recognised Biological Resource Centre (BRC). The virus collection is primarily based on viruses sourced from within the UK and is focussed

on human pathogens.

We have long recognised that there are good virus collections held by many European institutions that are not well catalogued and are not generally available to the scientifi c community. In light of this, NCPV has recently

started to work with a range of European

www.hpacultures.org.uk Tel: +44 (0) 1980 612512 email: [email protected]

partners with the aim of establishing a European Virus Archive (EVA), and has obtained EU funding to enable this process.

The initial ‘kick-off’ meeting for EVA was in February 2009 and, over the next few years, it is hoped that an extensive range of interesting viruses will become available to researchers. NCPV operations will continue and expand as before, but if customers are unable to obtain viruses required via the NCPV catalogue, then hopefully by utilising the EVA network then these omissions can be fulfi lled.

Visit www.hpacultures.org.uk to view the NCPV Virus collection. If you can’t fi nd the virus you are looking for – contact us so we can look to obtain a deposit.

New Operations Manager at NCTC

In September 2008 Steven Brimble was appointed Operations Manager for the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC), part of the Health Protection Agency Culture Collections.

Previously Steve worked as Quality Manager at the Health Protection Agency, Centre for Infections, Colindale liaising with staff in the Department of Healthcare Associated Infections and Antibiotic Resistance, Molecular Identifi cation Service Unit, Applied and Functional Genomics Unit and the NCTC. Before this Steve worked for the Food and Environmental Profi ciency Testing Unit, FEPTU, producing freeze dried bacterial cultures for EQA schemes aimed at food and water testing laboratories.

The NCTC has over 5000 bacterial cultures, together with over 100 mycoplasmas, more than 500 plasmids, host strains, bacteriophages and transposons available for supply. NCTC also provides a range of associated services, which include freeze-drying of customers’ own strains. Furthermore, the NCTC is an International Depository Authority (IDA) patent depository for bacterial cultures. Visit www.hpacultures.org.uk to view the complete listing of products and services available from NCTC.

Want to save time? Use Assay Ready Cells to Accelerate Drug Discovery

ECACC supplies frozen “Assay Ready” cells for drug discovery applications as part of our Cell Culture Management Services. This allows customers to decouple cell culture preparation from high throughput screening programmes, providing cells “off the shelf” to customer specifi cations when they are needed, and in the quantities required. Benefi ts include:

• No more need for continuous cell culture• Screen 5 days a week• Run consecutive primary and secondary

screening• Return to the same, standardized cellular

material whenever you want• Fully confi dential service

Provide us with a fl ask or an ampoule of the cell line you wish to use, e.g. cells expressing your protein of interest, and we will manufacture cell banks to your specifi cation, using one of a range of large scale cell culture systems.

A typical Assay Ready Bank consists of 100 to 500 ampoules, each containing 1 x 107 or more cells, cryopreserved in a programmable rate controlled freezer and certifi ed free of microbial (including mycoplasma) contamination.

Contact us NOW to discuss your needs.
