Members of Keep Wimberley Beautiful sponsor the Annual ScarecrowContest as a way to bring in the fall season and lend some local creativityto the downtown area. The contest averages around 20 entries, which sofar have included witches, mummies, skeletons and aliens to name a few.

The scarecrows go up in early October and remain stationed outside ofdowntown businesses, or in one case, smashed into a telephone pole, un-til their creators take them down after Halloween.

“We do it because it is fun and it provides a Fall Harvest atmosphere, helps kick off the merchants’ Pumpkin Festival, and it’s good for families,”said Knies.

Judges rate the entries on four categories: the most scariest, creative, comical, and a youth division. First place winners win $50 cash prizes.Second place gets $25, and third place winners receive $10.

“We’re really appreciative of all the participants from the schools, busi-nesses, clubs and families,” said Knies. “It’s a fun project that decoratesour town and makes it look like a fall harvest community.”

The Wimberley Valley is also home to several farmers and ranchers, and although the drought has been rough, these local growers haveweathered through dry times and have produced a fall harvest.

Montesino FarmsMontesino Organic Farm is in its sixth year of operation and has al-

ready earned a stellar reputation for consistently robust and vibrantfruits and vegetables. The farm occupies the front 9 acres ofMontesino Ranch on a gently sloping plain of deep soil. This land hasonly been worked with organic practices. Montesino’s farm managers

Melody McClary and David Burk keep retail and wholesale customershappy with a quality that can only be achieved through hands-in-the-soil practice, extra-care harvests and fresh same-day local delivery.

You can find Montesino at the Wimberley Farmers Market and theRR12 Farmers Market.

Visit their website at http://montesinoranch.com to check out all oftheir happenings.

EIEIO Organic FarmEIEIO’S Organic Farm is in it's third year of operation and is owned

by Kathleen Mooney. The farm sits on 12 acres, and Mooney tends tothe soil with her bare hands. It's an operation that is still up and run-ning, but the love and care Mooney puts into the soil, produces a won-derful bounty of fresh vegetables. They are focusing now on addingdifferent fruits to the usual produce selection.

The farm is well-known in Wimberley and several volunteers often

2011 FALL & WINTER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY v 29

30 v 2011 FALL & WINTER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY

If you haven’t been to a Wimberley Players production yet, you aremissing one of the best shows in town. The Players produce severalplays a year, in a variety of genres from musicals to comedy to seriousdrama. The theatre has been entertaining Hill Country residents for 30years. The Playhouse, located close to the downtown square, hasstate-of-the-art equipment, comfortable seats, and plenty of easyparking.

The current production at the Wimberley Playhouse is JosephKesselring’s “Arsenic and Old Lace” runs through Oct. 16. It is the hilar-ious comedy that focuses on the spinster Brewster sisters (Martha andAbby) whose prim and proper personalities and kind and charitablemotivations are manifested in some surprising and contradictoryways. Martha and Abby have three nephews who have extremely di-verse personalities and unique relationships with their aunts.Mortimer enjoys a close relationship with his aunts until he discoverssome things about them that cause him some severe mental stress.Teddy is mentally challenged but performs some unusual and labori-ous tasks for his aunts who dearly love and protect him. And thenthere’s Jonathan. Of the twelve plays written by Kesselring, “Arsenicand Old Lace” has been the most successful, and, according to theopening night review in the New York Times, the play was “so funnythat none of us will ever forget it.”

The Players current 2011 season closes with “She Loves Me” by JoeMasteroff, which opens Nov. 18 and runs through Dec. 11 at thePlayhouse. The production is considered to be by many the mostcharming musicals ever written. It is about two feuding clerks in aEuropean parfumerie during the 1930's who secretly find solace in

their individual anonymous romantic pen pals. Funny, intelligent, hon-est and sentimental, “She Loves Me” is a warm romantic comedy withan endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nos-talgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of internet ro-mances.

Visit the Players website at www.wimberleyplayers.org to find outmore about these productions and get a preview of the Players 2012Season lineup.
