Who’s who at William MorrisWe are a friendly yet vibrant sixth form community with up to 900 students. The welfare of our students is at the heart of our ethos and so we aim to operate an ‘open door’ policy, making ourselves accessible to students in need of support/advice outside of lesson time. We aim to promote an informal yet purposeful environment which will enable students to thrive as young adults and succeed in their lives beyond William Morris.

LEADERSHIP GROUPMatthew Coulbeck is our Principal who also teaches Economics. The rest of the Leadership Team comprises of Maurice Hartnett, Vice Principal, who has overall responsibility for Data Management and Teaching & Excellence. Maurice also teaches IT. We have three Assistant Principals: Kate Mitchell (Staff Development and teaching in the Social Sciences department); Nick Smith (Enrichment & Progression). Nick also works extensively with the Learning Support department; and Pia Khan (Student Attendance & Behaviour, Senior Tutor, teaching in the Media and Film Studies department).

SENIOR TUTORS Senior Tutors each have a responsibility for a specific year group and provide support to both the students and tutors in their cohort. Pia Khan is Senior Tutor to the A2 (Year 13) year group. Anthony Evans oversees the A1 (Year 12) year group, and is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. Angela Wright oversees the Level 1/Foundation and Level 2/GCSE cohort. Finally Matt Jenkins leads the Level 3 first and second year students.

You can read our full staff list on the website: www.wmsf.ac.uk.

Welcome from our PrincipalHello and welcome to our Sixth Form.

At our school you are a key part of a learning community. We place great emphasis on keeping our students focused on study and maintaining a calm and purposeful environment for learning. At William Morris, you will have a great opportunity to learn and make progress in your chosen subjects. We are proud of the way that we work with our students. In addition, our enrichment activities will enable you to have a rewarding and fulfilling time providing you with opportunities to develop new interests and experiences.

We celebrate the fact that we are a diverse, mixed and cohesive Sixth Form school, reflective of our communities. We are a proudly secular institution which recognises all religions – but favours none. All members of staff take a great interest in what you have to say and how you are progressing with us. We are determined to develop a positive and productive working relationship with every one of you.

I very much look forward to working with you, to seeing your progress and to celebrating your success.

Matthew Coulbeck

Courses at William MorrisWe offer courses at levels 1, 2 and 3. The level students enrol on depends on previous qualifications, i.e: students who gain five or more GCSEs at grade C (4-5) or above normally progress on to level 3 (advanced level).

There are two main types of courses – academic and vocational/applied. GCSEs and traditional A Levels fall into the academic group; vocational or applied courses such as BTEC courses differ because they are work related, focusing on an area of employment (like business or health care) and on learning through real situations.

Our course offer is amended based on demand for the subjects.

We encourage students to choose courses which offer a broad educational experience and to continue developing their essential skills. All advanced level students are encouraged to add our Extended Curriculum courses to their main programme as this will further enrich their educational and personal growth. These may also take the form of an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), equivalent to half an A level, or an additional language.

We also offer Level 2 Sports Studies, a course taught in conjunction with Chelsea Football Club Foundation and the Fulham Enterprise Studio.

Please look on the website (www.wmsf.ac.uk) for the current course offer, and detailed leaflets on each course.

Enrichment and career opportunitiesCentral to our educational philosophy is a view of learning as a rich experience which extends well beyond the bounds of the classroom and the years spent at school, college and university. We hope that students will participate in activities which will help them lead a fulfilling life, keep healthy and fit, and develop a sense of responsibility as a citizen.

Our Enrichment programme offers students a different choice of activities in each term. This includes various sports, dance and aerobics, arts awards, film club, Duke of Edinburgh Award, visits to theatres and trips to cities in Europe and Africa. Over 300 students and staff take part in our annual 5k Fun Run around Hyde Park. Many students lead courses on the Enrichment programme, aiding the development of their leadership skills. Within our weekly tutorial programme we encourage discussion of issues relevant to young people and invite outside speakers and experts to cover topics like fitness and health, stress management, sex and drugs education, and citizenship. We regularly offer students opportunities to develop skills and personal qualities which build confidence in team working and develop leadership skills. Our Student Union is active in representing student views to staff.

We use the Jack Petchey Award Scheme to foster a sense of responsibility and community within our students. Each month a student is awarded £250 through the scheme for demonstrating leadership skills, outstanding work within lessons and community- mindedness amongst many reasons.

Support and welfare services

6 7

Our student-centred approach means understanding and meeting the needs of each individual student. We recognise that students require extra support beyond classroom teaching and offer this in a variety of ways, including: – a safeguarding team who work to ensure that every student is well supported and cared

for, especially when experiencing personal/academic difficulties.– a personal tutor for each student who is responsible for monitoring overall progress,

providing care and support– learning support to help with literacy difficulties, essay writing, revision, meeting

deadlines etc. – counsellors who offer a confidential counselling service, a health education programme

and advice service as well as a specialist welfare team.

Maria Alphonso is our Student Services Manager – she is situated on the first floor of the Student Services Centre (SSC) with Lucy Maher, our Extended Curriculum Manager. Our Higher Education and Careers team is made up of Stefan O’Gorman and Namrah Chaudhry, who work together on the ground floor of the SSC. The Student Support team has links with many outside agencies, enabling our students to access a wide range of progression opportunities, such as: apprenticeship and training programmes, counselling, Higher Education fairs and much more. The SSC has rooms for confidential interviews and a public area for displays and presentations. We welcome students with special needs, including those with statements and physical disabilities.

We believe that the support we give is outstanding.

AchievementsSince we opened in 1994, our examination results have been excellent. Each year the hard work of students and teachers is rewarded with high levels of attainment and achievement in public examinations.

We are proud that students across all our courses at levels, 1, 2 and 3 do well. We celebrate with equal delight the success of the student who achieves top A level grades and progresses to a prestigious Russell Group university as we do the success of a student coming to us with poor GCSE results who has made a successful fresh start and gained confidence and a positive attitude to learning.

Our results are consistently equal to or better than national pass rates, and in some cases significantly so. Our value-added scores, which measure the distance students have travelled in their learning, are amongst the best in the country. As our most recent Ofsted report said, “students… feel valued and recognise the work that teachers put into helping students achieve their lofty ambitions,” which is reflected in our exam results.

We encourage students to excel in their personal as well as academic development, and use the Jack Petchey Award scheme to reward students who have been seen to develop personally and achieve growth through their experiences at William Morris. We make sure to celebrate every individual as well as group success in our Sixth Form.

ValuesWilliam Morris Sixth Form aims to provide high quality education to 16-19 year olds of all abilities within an inner London context. We aim to support the social mobility of young people whatever their background so they can achieve outcomes that more than reflect their abilities; we also enable them to progress on aspirational pathways.

We are an inclusive, comprehensive sixth form where students are treated as young adults. We aim to create a learning environment where there is mutual respect, a focus on achievement and a careful balance between being friendly and being firm. We want students to develop a love of learning, a sense of global and community responsibility and their own interpersonal skills so that each student can make a positive contribution to society in the future. This is a safe learning environment where students can develop, learn, achieve and progress.

How do we put these values into action?

– A tutorial and pastoral system that supports and guides students through the challenges they face both internally and outside school.

– High quality teaching where students are encouraged to learn in a stimulating and enjoyable manner.

– Teaching that helps students develop skills and qualities enabling them to become independent learners.

What can William Morris offer you?Since we opened in 1994, we have been leaders in providing high quality post-16 education in West London. This includes preparing students for both A Level and vocational qualifications. By providing a unique blend of high quality teaching, high expectations and individual pastoral support, we have enabled thousands of young Londoners to access university and other equivalent pathways after studying with us.

Our curriculum offer enables students to chose a combination of subjects unique to their needs and interests: some students may study a mixture of A Level and Level 3 BTEC courses, whilst others may study a combination of Level 2 and Functional Skills programmes.

As well as the academic provision here, our newly relaunched Enrichment programme allows students the opportunity to develop in a holistic sense. Students are able to choose Enrichment courses in a wide variety of areas such as sports, debate, media, writing and much more. The Enrichment programme has a dedicated time slot and is given equal importance to the students’ academic timetable.

The pastoral system we have in our Sixth Form provides numerous forms of care for our students – the Student Services team are always on-site to offer guidance and advice, as well as a space for students to discuss their positive experiences here as well as concerns they may have.

Above all, William Morris Sixth Form offers students an opportunity to begin life as a young adult, and to take responsibility for their education and personal welfare in a safe and supportive environment.

Admissions policy

10 11

Our Admissions cycle begins with our autumn Open Evenings in which prospective students and their parents can meet staff and current students and see our facilities. Please see our website for dates. A prospectus pack is available at the open events, on request and on our website: www.wmsf.ac.uk.

Places are allocated strictly on a first-come-first-served basis / in order of date of application. As we are always oversubscribed, we strongly advise that applications are made before February Half-Term. Students who apply later may well gain a place, but possibly not on their first choice of course. Students are treated as individuals and are given extensive guidance on suitable courses. We aim to acknowledge an application within three weeks of receipt. Students are encouraged to submit an enquiry if they do not hear from us after this time, as we may not have received their application.

Applicants are required to attend a one-to-one interview with one of our teachers. During interview, an effort is made to find out from the students their current abilities and future aspirations. Based on this information, we aim to begin the process of guiding the student in their course choices. If offered a place, the student must then attend our post-exams Course Guidance event in the summer, during which more extensive information and guidance is given about our courses. Final course decisions are made at Enrolment in late August, once GCSE results have been published.

As offers are conditional on GCSE and BTEC grades, it is not possible to finalise course choices before Enrolment. If students have not met the conditions of their offer, we always try to offer an alternative course.
