Does your Club have a plan for Membership
Growth? If not, now is an ideal time to put a plan
together. A small Membership Team of 2 or 3
keen Lions can make sure that you have
someone always available to talk to interested
people during your summer activities. They can
also make sure you have information about your
Club and about Lions in general at all your events.
Now is the time to Plan and take Action to make
Membership Growth a priority in your Club.
As always, if you need any help or advice on this

Diabetes Awareness Days in Ross on Wye
Ross on Wye Lions Club held their second stall
run by Diabetes UK Hereford) promoting Diabetes
awareness in Ross Market Place. Organised by
Lion David Ravenscroft, this is a Service Project
of Ross Lions Club and part of a programme of
Diabetes
awareness
events,
the first of
which was
held in
May.
Ross on
Wye has a
Carnival
on the first
Saturday
of August.
Ross Lions always have stalls, especially free
games for children and once again a Punch and
Judy will be visiting. Alongside this fun there will
be the third Diabetes Awareness session and this
time Ross Lions will be supporting the Diabetes
volunteers to make health assessments available
free of charge.
Paediatric Cancer ABELIENE HEATHER
AQUINO from Northern Philippines. Her situation
attracted our attention and support from
Aberystwyth Lions Club, Fishguard and Goodwick
Lions Club and personal financial support from
Lion David Hurst and Lion Morena Malbog of
Gower and Llwchwr Estuary Lions Club.
Abeliene Heather Aquino is a nine years old girl
born on the 8th of May, 2010. On Valentines Day
in 2012, she was diagnosed with Lymphocytic
Leukaemia at a very tender age of One Year and
Nine months old.
When we visited her this year, she requested from
the lion members of the Laoac United Lions Club
in District 301-C, Northern Philippines, of which I
was the Charter President, a birthday cake. Due
to extreme poverty, apparently she never ever
had a birthday cake before. Lion members of the
LULC (Laoac United Lions Club) acceded to grant
her wish.
Picture shows Abeliene on her birthday with LULC President
Dra. Lina Alipio on the left. Her father on the right, other lion
members and her mother Michelle providing background.
On the 3rd of July, 2019, Abeliene while in school,
complained that everything seem dark. Her father
went to take her home, carrying her in the pro-
cess. When they informed me of her situation, I
asked LULC lion members to take her to an EENT

(Eyes, Ears, Nose & Throat) specialist. After a
thorough examination of Abeliene, the doctor
informed everyone that the nerves connected to
her right eye supplying oxygen to the retina were
severely damaged by the chemotherapy during
her treatment for cancer. The parents informed
everyone, its only on that moment that they
figured out why there’s no tears coming from her
right eye whenever she cry. The specialist doctor
also informed the group that only 20% of her left
eye is functioning.
Dr. Erwin Ulep working on Abeliene’s eyes and carrying out
needed examination.
The lions are taking Abeliene to the eye specialist
again Saturday, the 13th of July, 2019 to
ascertain whether her left eye can be saved to
provide her much needed sight. Am fully aware,
the NEED is so far away, over seven thousand
miles away. Is there any way at all by which any
lion/s or club/s provide much needed financial as-
sistance to alleviate the suffering of Abeliene and
her family despite the distance? Their ‘house’ is
just what is inside a four wall covered by a roof
which can not even protect them from the rain.
The flooring is plain dry earth. They don’t have
any furniture at all, not a single table or chair, or
bed, just nothing. Over the years, the parents
have sold whatever they have to buy Abeliene the
medicines she desperately needs. Am sorry, am
just so touched by their suffering. But should any-
one wants to contribute any amount, please let
me know. I guarantee you, every penny, if any,
will be given or used for Abeliene.

Donation of Reclining Chairs, Kangaroo Sling
Pouches On a recent visit to the Paediatric ward
of the Pangasinan Regional General Hospital in
the city of Dagupan, Philippines we donated
Knitted baby clothes and blankets for infant
babies. In the course of our visit, we were asked if
we could help to provide reclining chairs and
kangaroo pouches to enable parents to nurse and
feed their babies. When we went there were 138
patient children: 5 newly born, 3 in intensive care.
Lion David Hurst and Lion Morena Malbog of
Gower Llwchwr Estuary Lions Club, decided to
donate 6 reclining chairs and 4 baby kangaroo
pouches and 5 sling type baby pouches. There
are advantages of breast feeding to help the new
born babies and infant build up the immunity to
reduce the possibility in contracting measles and
dengue fever. Due to over crowding and lack of
facilities, there was no place for mothers to sit
other than the bed where the sick child was re-
ceiving the treatment. Within 15 minutes after we
donated the reclining chairs and baby carrier,
these were all being used. Lion David took the
opportunity to talk to and praise the dedicated
staff, many had done 24 hours shift in order to
care and meet the needs of the sick children.
One of the reclining chairs donated

Balsall Common Lions welcome new President After a very successful and hectic year in office, Lion President Marie-Louise Marsden hands over to the new incoming President Lion Ross Collins. This will be Ross’s third time as Presi-dent. Ross has been in the Lions since November 1997 and many of you will know him from all our Fundraising events as he is the one who pesters you to buy tickets! You may also be aware that he a Life-long Blue Nose, a Birmingham City support-er, but we won’t go into that. We wish Lion President Ross all the best for the forthcoming year. Balsall Common Lions welcome two new members to the Club Christine Hornsby needs no introduction to everyone in the village & has been involved in Lions (through our much missed Lion Brian who passed away last year) for 43 years. She is involved with many activities locally such as St. Peter's Church Hall, Re-cycling, Marie-Curie & was very active with us at our recent successful Prostate Screening and has already attended our Business Meetings and meetings with the Service & Fellowship Committees. Just a
footnote we’ve just discovered she also makes a very good chocolate cake! In the photo with Chris-tine (L-R) is Lion Barrie Cousins (Sponsor) with President Ross.
NOTE: It was very
poignant that upon becoming a Lion, Christine used Brian's Lions pin in the Lions membership ceremony’. Nick Clarke lives in the village with his wife, and son. He also has a daughter who is a teacher. He already knows quite a few Lions and consequently knew a lot about us & what we do. He has already attended several Business Meet-ings and has been actively involved in a number
of Lions activities,
like Santa's sleigh
& Quiz Night. In
fact, Nick's family
provide the hospi-
tality stop at Dale
Meadow Close.
In the photo with Nick (L-R) is Lion Steve Meakin (Sponsor) with President Ross.
We are very pleased to welcome both to our club. Balsall Common Lions Prostate Screening event on Saturday 18th May was a great success with a record 431 men coming along for a free blood test to check their Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). The event was organised in association with Graham Fulford Charitable Trust. We must give a huge thanks to everyone who helped and supported us on the day, a fantastic response and a great effort by Balsall Common Lions Club, and the team of phlebotomists who worked tirelessly throughout the session.
The photo show Mel & Marion Davis from Prostate Cancer UK, with the Phlebotomists, & Mr David Baxter-Smith, a re-tired consultant urologist, with his wife Mrs Dorothy Baxter-Smith.
Thanks to The White Horse for free pints and to CP Barbers for their kind donation towards the event, plus everyone who helped by promoting the day. We had an early start with a radio interview with Lion Jerry @ BBC Coventry & Warwick-shire Radio and a full house - exceeding all of our expectations! A Big Thank You to Everyone who turned up on the morning & everyone who helped make it such a great success.

A Lively night with the Brassneck Ceilidh Band Great night in St Peter's Church Hall with
the Brassneck Ceilidh Band, who are an English Country Dance band, based in the Midlands. It was certainly a
very energetic fun evening with everyone dancing. Their repertoire includes a wide range of music with many of the best known Scottish tunes, with relaxed waltzes, the OXO reel through to the livelier Strip the Willow.
Inthe picture with the band is Lion President Marie-Louise Marsden with Steve Edkins (first on the left), who as well as playing the guitar, mandola & bodhran, is their front man and fun caller with his jokes along the way. We look forward to seeing them again sometime in the future. First Aid Training @ Balsall Common Primary
School Balsall Common Lions were pleased to
help again with providing First Aid training for Bal-
sall Common Primary School. Three trainers from
Warwickshire Hearts First Aid provided the train-
ing for Year 6 pupils doing three sessions on: Inju-
ries and Bandaging, Breathing Problems
(including Allergies & Asthma Attacks) and CPR
training.
Service chairman Lion June Leitch stated we are
delighted to continue with First Aid Training to
help equip these youngsters with such important
skills. It was good to see how attentive and
enthusiastic the pupils all were & they all enoyed
the training.

Balls in the Bog Berkswell Village Fete You wouldn’t think Summer is here as Balsall Common Lions kick off the Fete/Festival season with an appearance at this years Berkswell Fete with Ball in the bog. There was a lot to see, including many stalls, a bouncy castle, dog show & competition, dance display, children’s activities, games, refreshments, an exhibition of some classic cars and a Beer & Pimm's tent. Fortunately the weather didn’t put some people off & a great many came along to join in the fun. The photo shows keen children wait-ing to get a ball in the bog! Lions Zone 7 in Solihull receives the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Zone 7, comprising the 7 Lions Clubs in Solihull has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The 7 clubs have a total of 150 members who spend their time giving service to their local community and raising funds to support the service activities, but also to fund other projects, locally and further away. Recently the clubs donated £10, 000 to the Man shed project at the Marie Curie Hospice and only 2 weeks ago they held the Knowle and Dorridge Fun Run. During the year they organise numerous carnivals, health screenings, pensioner parties, beer festivals. Of course every child is excited to see the Lions coming around with Santa in December. Representatives from Zone 7 attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award. Zone 7 is one of 281 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations and awards has increased year on year since the awards were introduced in 2002, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteers helping people overcome men-tal health problems through sport, volunteers using caravans as mobile cafe/information centres in geographically remote locations and another group mentoring children who have a parent in prison. Representatives of Zone 7 will receive the award from John Crabtree, Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands later this summer. 2nd VDG, Lion Jaap de Jonge says: “The first Lions started in Solihull 50 years ago to do their bit for the community and has grown to 7 clubs over the years, covering the whole Borough from Balsall Common to Castle Bromwich. 150
people who unselfishly spend their time and also some of their own money, in running this organi-sation for the benefit of their fellow people. They beaver away in the background, and they are now properly recognised for the hard work they do. I cannot think of a more worthy recipient of this high honour.” Notes: 1. Lord Lieutenants represent the monarch in
each of the UK’s ceremonial counties. 2. This year there were 281 winners of The
Queen’s Award Voluntary Service from across the UK. More information on the win-ners and the Award can be found at https://www.gov.uk/queens-award-for-voluntary-service
3. Any group of two or more people that has participated in voluntary work for more than three years can be nominated for the award. Full details on how to nominate are availa-ble at http://qavs.direct.gov.uk/
4. Nominations for the 2020 awards close on 13 September 2019.
For further information and glad to come to the studio for an interview. Jaap de Jonge 2nd VDG

the prevention of young suicide.
Most people do not realise that suicide is the biggest killer of young people under 35, male and female, in the UK. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling. If our donation can help prevent one young suicide it will have been worth it. Lion President Rob Owen presents cheque on behalf of Papyrus to Kash Sherman-Kahn.
Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions also recognised the work of three long serving Lions, Lion Mary Thompson, Lion Jane Hayward and Lion Karen Rice, with a presentation of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award. This is the highest award that can be given and recognises an individual’s con-tribution to humanity and to the legacy of our founder, Melvin Jones.
District Governor Lion Stewart Sherman-Kahn and Lion Rob Owen (President of Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions) pre-sent Melvin Jones Fellowships to Lions Jane Hayward, Karen Rice & Mary Thompson.
Kenilworth Lions Dream Scheme Awards As part of its programme of events throughout 1969 to mark the 50year anniversary since the founding of the Club in 1969, Kenilworth Lions held a spe-cial Club meeting in June, to present Dream Scheme cash awards to twelve local groups and organisations. Guests at the meeting included Lion Fran Stary, zone105E chair 2018/19, and Lion Dave Tunney zone105E chair 2019/20. Presentation of the awards was made by Lion Gordon Henderson, president of Kenilworth Lions Club 2018/19. The Dream Scheme was launched at the begin-ning of the year. The objective of the scheme was to reach out to individuals and groups who might not have sought funding support from Lions in the past. Since the Dream Scheme was launched, twenty three awards of up to £1,000 have been made, with a total value of £18,520. The Scheme is now closed for 2019.
During the whole of 2018/19, the Club will have made total donations exceeding £50,000. The range of successful Dream Scheme bids was wide and varied, including: • Football coaching provision for girls. • Polytunnel outdoor classroom for SEND
children at local retreat. • Women's Refuge Wellbeing Fund. • Speak out workshops about child abuse at
local primary schools. • High-low soft reclining chair for local hospi-
tal ward. • Free workshops for parents to be. • Uniform for school orchestra and choir for

In the Summer holidays, our donation will help pay for a visit to the Sir John Lowther County Scout Activity Centre at Glendon near Kettering. Where they can experience scouting activities such as; cooking their own food on an open fire, archery and a challenging obstacle course. Highfield Barnes Youth Club, which started 17 years ago, is run by Kelly Mercer. There are currently 28 boys and girls aged 4 to 12, who meet weekly in the community centre on the Highfields estate. The club does not receive any grants or financial help, and the modest subs they collect have to be used to pay the charge to use the centre.

Kettering & District Lions enjoyed a wonderful evening at their recent changeover meal, where we welcomed our new President for the year Roy Burrows, and said our thanks to retiring President Malcolm Taylor Griffiths for his successful year.
Saturday 22nd June, at Ketter-ing FC’s foot-ball presenta-tion, Kettering & District Lions held a charity cake sale, which raised a fantastic £415!
All the money raised at the event is going towards Glideaway Guest Beds for Palliative Care at KGH. Glideaway beds are special folding guest beds that can be used on wards to allow patients’ fami-lies to stay at their side whilst they are in hospital. Kettering & District Lions hopes to purchase a number of beds for the hospital with their contin-ued fundraising efforts. Acocks Green Lions Lions supporting life skills Acocks Green lions sponsored a trip for year 7 inclusion students from Ninestiles school, to go on a
life skills trip. President Lion Sara Moseley presented a cheque to the Ninestiles school principal Alex Hughes. Lion Sara attended the trip with two other mem-bers of staff. Some of the students had never been on public transport or out for a meal before. An amazing experience for all.
Lion Sara present-ed a second cheque to Principal Alex Hughes for support of a student swimming at the Transplant games.
Another great Lions bike ride organised by Knowle and Dorridge Lions saw nearly 650 cy-clists set off from Packwood House on Sunday 14 July to wind their ways around the lanes of War-wickshire all in aid of charity. Riders had a choice of 20, 30 or 100 kms with the dry and not too hot weather encouraging many to tackle the longer routes this year.
“We were delighted to welcome so many riders again for the Heart of England Bike Ride on Sun-day 14 July”, said organiser Lion Paul Wheatley. “Many riders helped by riding in to the start at Packwood House, avoiding major parking issues. We believe we have raised close to £11,000 thanks to the generosity of cyclists and sponsors alike. As well as thanking all the riders and help-ers I now have to thank the generous sponsors who enabled the Lions to tell riders that all their entry fees will go to the charity partners – SoLO Life Opportunities, Sepsis Trust UK and locally determined causes”. If you missed out this year the Lions are already planning next July’s ride. News items from Glantawe Lions Glantawe
(Swansea Valley) Lions have done a number of
things in recent weeks…
We support the community garden in Clydach.
We donated £250 to enable the volunteers to
purchase equipment. We attend the garden every
Wednesday and 1st Saturday of the month. The
produce grown in the garden is given to the local
foodbanks. Our club members have found it very
rewarding to serve whilst developing friendships
within the community.
The photos show Lion Lynne weeding and Lion President
Rhian Williams digging
During our handover, we badged a new member Tricia Bailey, the attached photo shows Lion President Rhian Williams with Tricia and Membership chairperson Philip Taylor. We donated a defibrillator to Birchgrove Community Centre and held training session for the community with MyCariad. It was a well attended event and on the back of this event we have received requests to hold similar training sessions in neighbouring areas. We held a litter pick with both the Scouts and the Beavers in the Clydach area. It was a great event with both clubs thoroughly enjoying. Attached pictures are with the Beavers and Scouts.
Every 3rd Thursday of the month we hold a darts night for people with sight loss at the Travellers Well, Carmarthen Rd Swansea. It's an opportunity for people with sight loss to be included in activities. Both club members and a ttendees from RNIB really enjoy these evenings and ensure they're full of fun and laughter. We have grown a strong bond with the RNIB and the club has received vision awareness training from them. This partnership is going from strength to strength.

Hereford’s Record Donations Hereford Lions Club completed the Lions year with a record £46,000 donated to local and international chari-ties and community projects. The city hospital – and more importantly its patients who faced long delays when old equipment kept breaking down – received £24,000: £10,000 towards a Prostate cancer sample testing machine; £9,000 to buy a new bladder scanner and £5,000 towards the cost of providing a special suite in the maternity unit for families who lose a baby at birth so they can have privacy to grieve. A new project has given grants to community groups or individuals to help tackle the growing problem of loneliness. It has been well received and several new ideas to bring the lonely into the wider community are up and running. A similar scheme to help combat Dementia is being planned. The club’s fund raising includes a weekly car boot sale and a monthly pub quiz, both well supported. Its annual charity golf competition at Hereford-shire Golf Club is on Friday August 2 and any Li-ons in our new district wanting to play can ring Lion John Oldman on 01432 760685. Lion Tony Cole, a retired accountant received both royal and international commendations marking his half century of service with the club. He received a special certificate signed by nation-al Patron, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and a per-sonal letter from international president, Gudrun Yngvadottr of Iceland.

Some are increasingly aging, working odd hours, have problems at home etc etc. We have a core group of helpers “Friends of Black Mountains Lions”. who come along and help out when they can - These people currently have no wish to join the Lions at present for one reason or another - although we will continue to encourage them to do so – but they are invaluable at times. We not only call on them when we need help, but include them in our social activities as well. Our aim now is to enlarge the group with an aim to encourage a few to join. We will keep them up to date with club activities via a “Friends” newslet-ter, invite them to all activities – we have a cam-paign “Supporting Community Diabetes Aware-ness” running this year, which encourages various activities for different abilities. The 1st of which was a Rock and Roll evening which went really well. Some of the BML and Friends visited the Brecon Mountain Railway for a Sunday afternoon trip on the steam train (see picture), and we have a Disco and BBQ planned next. We have also contributed towards putting in spe-cial gates on a local footpath in aid of a local pro-ject “Miles without Stiles” and aim to set up a walk for all to join in: not only the public but also our Friends. Lets hope the weather holds! On Saturday 29th June 2019 we held our 51st Club Charter at The Village Hotel in Swansea. It was also one of our members, Lion David Jones, 50th year in Lions so it was a joint celebration. It was a lovely evening attended by our District Gov-ernor Lion Sally Marsh and a number of Clubs from our Zone and beyond. All who attended left in high spirits.

Droitwich Lions were delighted to make a
contribution It was a great pleasure to visit Fort Royal School today for the official unveiling of their two new mini buses. Margaret Jones who is the fundraiser for Fort Royal has worked tirelessly to raise
the money. Fort Royal is a wonderful school as the parents of the children there will tell you. Worcester Lions and the Street Café The day had gone like clockwork. The amount of food we had bought worked out to be portion perfect, we hadn’t burnt anything and the Lion that had lent their kitchen for the day was pleased we had left it pristine. None of that had made us in the least bit nervous but the evening would be a different matter alto-gether. As we approached the city centre we saw people making their way towards where we were

making their way towards where we were head-ing. You couldn’t mistake them as let’s be honest, who else carries their entire life belongings with them as they amble along. Some we recognised as we had seen them in shop doorways, passed them by as we had gone about our busy lives. We had offered to cook for The Worcester Street Café
and it was too late to turn back. As we pulled up we sat and waited for the Street Café van to arrive. Do we get out? There were lots of people sat in the kerb, grouped around the doorways,
milling around and some alone, quiet, keeping their heads downwards. We watched the two Lions in the car in front get out and they were instantly greeted by a group of men with smiles, handshakes and a hug. As we joined them we too were made to feel completely at ease, welcome and a realisation that we had made the right deci-sion. ‘Think of service not as a duty but as a privilege’
It was a privilege to be a tiny part of this amazing community service. 40 people fed with a hot meal and dessert, clothes and sleeping bags were dis-tributed by other volunteers, local coffee shops had sent their left overs and lunch bags for the following day were distributed. 40 people! This is just Worcester, do you have something similar near you? Don’t think it’s not for you, give it a try and make that small difference today.
