@wild_photoswww.wildphotos.org.uk

WildPhotos is the most eagerly anticipated symposium for wildlife photographers of all abilities. It welcomes novices, students, keen amateurs and many of the world's best professionals. As the talks unfold, delegates are treated to an extraordinary diversity of work:

illustrative, imaginative, beautiful – and from all the sub-genres of the field, from portraiture to frontline photojournalism. Thus every year it becomes a visual extravaganza, a great place to listen and learn, the perfect event to 'network' or just to sit and quietly wonder at the images.

I've seen photos displayed at WildPhotos that have been indelibly tattooed onto my memory. At times I've wanted to jump up and applaud a picture. In short, I've seen photographs that have changed my life, the way I look at the world, the way I think – and the way I now point my lenses at our planet's beautiful life. It really is a treat and I am sure there will be something for you to treasure this year too .

Chris PackhamCOMPERE, SATURDAY 12 OCTOBER

P.S. There's always a little bit of controversy and debate too, which is good as it keeps us all on our toes!

WELCOME TOWILDPHOTOS 2013

Welcome to the wildlife photography event of the year. Nothing else comes close to this wonderful weekend of inspirational talks and imagery and, like so many others, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

This year, once again, we’ll be hearing from the very best wildlife and conservation photographers. Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols, Sergey Gorshkov, Pål Hermansen, Steve Winter, Andy Rouse and a great many other masters of their craft, from as far afield as Japan, Russia, Norway and the States, will be revealing an astonishing range of subjects and styles, and telling the stories behind their cracking images.

It’s just a shame it’s only a weekend. Two days simply isn’t enough.

LIONS, ELEPHANTS AND GIANTS – TRIALS, TRAGEDIES AND TRIUMPHSCREATING PICTURES THAT MATTER

SATURDAY, 16:15ONDAATJE THEATRE

After delivering an inspirational talk at WildPhotos 2009, Michael 'Nick' Nichols is making

an eagerly anticipated return to the biggest event in Britain's wildlife photography calendar.

Interrupting his US lecture tour to be at WildPhotos, Nick will bring Saturday's programme to a close with a compelling keynote. 'Lions, Elephants and Giants' offers an overview of his most recent photo-essays, including 'The Short Happy Life of a Serengeti Lion', one of the 25 stories that he has photographed for National Geographic

Magazine during his 17 year staff career on the title. Nick's assignment in the Serengeti saw him pushing the latest technology to create innovative images. Whether the images were recorded in infrared, by moonlight or shot from height using a camera mounted on a small, remote-controlled 'MikroKopter', each has an edge to them; you won't have seen shots of the king of the beasts quite like these.

It was a combination of technical invention and lofty ambition that lead to Nick's celebrated stories on the world's tallest trees for NGM in

2013 WILDPHOTOS 5

2009 and 2012. Although the scale of California's Redwoods had been captured before, few had made images of such dizzying proportions. Breaking new ground with special rigging and compositing techniques enabled Nick to reveal a 300-foot-tall redwood in unrivaled detail.

The same can also be said about the collection of hard-to-forget pictures in his new book, Earth to Sky: Among Africa's Elephants, A Species in Crisis. The culmination of more than 20 years working with these magnificent animals, this body of work takes us

into the heart of the herd. The images offer a close-up view of elephants' daily lives, and serve as a clear signal of the need to act now to protect their vanishing world.

Nick has influenced a generation of wildlife and environmental photographers, and his work continues to make a difference. In a world of convergence and the relentless tug of mobile phones, it's heartening to know that photographs, and the photographers behind them, can still deliver a wake-up call.www.michaelnicknichols.com

S E E M O R E … Nick's first iPad app features more than 180 photographs that span over 20 years of wildlife and cultural photography.

Before making a living behind the camera, Greg spent the early part of his working life serving an apprenticeship as a wilderness guide in South Africa's Timbavati Game Reserve. The bushcraft skills he learned during the days and nights spent stalking Africa's big game on foot have made a significant contribution to the success of his fine-art wildlife photography career. Greg will be passing on some of this knowledge during WildPhotos, sharing techniques that can take your safari work to the next level and explaining how to master movement to ensure you return from your trip with more than 'trophy shots'.

Although Andy's carved a name for himself through his dynamic studies of iconic species on every continent, it's his intimate stories of wildlife closer to home that perhaps show his true skill as a photographer. Andy's entertaining talk will focus on his exploits at a World War I airfield and the wildlife that has taken advantage of the surroundings. You'll get some insight into the technical tricks and fieldcraft techniques that Andy's been using to capture images of barn owls, hares and little owls, and, of course, you'll get to see the final, fantastic results.

A former teacher, Fabrice now finds himself in the enviable position of being able to concentrate full-time on his two passions – writing and wildlife photography. An early riser, he can often be found photographing the local carnivores that populate the fields and forests near his home at dawn. Fabrice will reveal the difference that fieldcraft has made to his pursuit of the perfect picture, and how it has enabled him to get close enough to record the secret life of his natural neighbours.

In addition to his compere duties on Sunday, Saturday's WildPhotos programme sees Mark – former Chairman of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year judging panel and a renowned zoologist, conservationist and TV presenter – offering his tips for photographing whales and dolphins without the aid of a wetsuit. Mark has spent 25 years perfecting his 'seacraft', and knows how daunting the mix of fast-moving subjects, lashing waves and rolling and swaying platform can be for beginners. His advice will give you at least a fighting chance of taking crisp, thoughtfully composed shots of creatures that typically offer just a tantalisingly brief glimpse of themselves.

WORKSHOPREMOTE AND CAMERA TRAP PHOTOGRAPHY

SATURDAY, 10:00-13:00SUNDAY, 10:00-13:00LOWTHER ROOM

Take an in-depth look at the gear and techniques required for successful photography using remote camera systems and autonomous camera traps. Will has recently returned from a year in Africa and he will be showing some of the results of his camera trap work in South Luangwa, as well as images captured on the latest incarnation of 'BeetleCam'.

"Often people ask how animals react to my devices, particularly BeetleCam. The answer is that it very much depends on the species and the way that you approach them. Young lions for example are usually very curious and immediately attempt to play with any unfamiliar object. Other animals, such as elephants, may be more cautious, so it's better to position the camera in their path and then leave it completely still so that it doesn't spook them."

As part of the workshop you'll be able to go hands-on with some of Will's devices, including BeetleCam.

Joe is a wildlife photojournalist who rose to prominence with his work recording the Grand Teton pronghorn migration. It was during this project that he got to grips with camera traps, and discovered the right and wrong way to employ the tech. It takes skill to know where to position a camera trap and Joe will be sharing his know-how, as well as showing his spectacular shots of Argentina's Vicuña, Gobi bears in Mongolia and, of course, Wyoming's great ungulate migration.

Jenny is the principal at conservation film-making outfit Pongo Media, and she will be offering her invaluable advice for telling stories with moving pictures, as well as discussing best practice for recording audio and highlighting filming problems to avoid. "One pitfall is to shoot video like you shoot a still," Jenny says, "trying to squeeze all of the story into one frame rather than utilising the video medium to its full potential by thinking in terms of how it will be edited. I come from a stills background, and I've noticed that I approach a video shoot in an entirely different way – creatively, mentally and physically."

If you have any burning questions regarding shooting and editing techniques, Jenny will be happy to answer them after her talk.

How do you expose the full scale of environmental degradation? By taking to the air. Garth, a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, will be covering his influential work from The True Cost of Oil project in some detail. His images of Canada's Tar Sands mining project show the value of aerial photography in terms of revealing the impacts of industrial development. Garth will be explaining how he has used it to contrast and compare the industrial and natural environment, bringing to light some common visual elements shared across scenes of these very different subjects.

"I hope that photographers and delegates will come away with a better understanding of the ecological impacts of certain issues such as extreme energy and deforestation," says Garth, "as well as a greater awareness of the ways photography can illustrate these issues."

If you're a natural history photographer who's concerned more about the why than the how, then Sandra's session is not be missed. Vice-president of the Society of German Nature Photographers (GDT) from 2007 to 2013 and chief editor of the magazine GDT Forum Naturfotografie, Sandra has become an established name through her evocative images of the natural landscape. "I have always approached photography intuitively and I grew bored of normal representation at an early stage," she says. "The challenge is creating something new for myself, something that makes me happy rather than being creative for others."

Sandra will be presenting a variety of work from her portfolio, including elegant shots of plants, water and trees, and touching on the techniques behind them. However, the main focus of her talk will be more about how she develops her ideas: "how I get inspired and how I try to push myself."

WORKSHOP FIELD OF VIEW

SATURDAY, 14:00-17:00SUNDAY, 14:00-17:00COUNCIL ROOM

This workshop explores the art of visualisation, a key skill which Chris feels that many nature photographers neglect. "This assertion really stems from the homogeneity evident in much of modern wildlife photography – in both subject matter and style – partly as a consequence of the recent explosion in baited sites and rented hides, and partly through time pressure," he says. "But I also think that people like certainties, and tend to be more comfortable with the mechanics of photography. This is borne out by the preoccupation with these matters in photography books, magazines, and online forums, at the expense of more creative considerations."

Chris will suggest ways to extend creativity and expression, and there will be some practical, creative challenges to undertake on the day.

WORKSHOPMACRO PHOTOGRAPHY

SATURDAY, 14:00-17:00SUNDAY, 14:00-17:00DRAYSON ROOM

"When I look down my macro lens at an insect, I am always struck by a sense of discovery," admits our macro photography workshop leader Alex Hyde. "Intricate details normally too small to see with the naked eye are revealed in all their glory, and I am left marvelling at the complexity and beauty of the natural world."

With Alex's help, you'll be able to do justice to the miniature marvels you go in search of. In each afternoon session, he'll offer technical and technique advice and put the theory into practice with live demonstrations.

Learn how to control lighting with reflectors, diffusers and off-camera flash, and how understanding a subject's behaviour can help you to get the best shot. You will also look at the macro lens options available today and advanced techniques like focus stacking before throwing your toughest questions at Alex in a macro Q&A session.

Emanuele has an infectious enthusiasm for the 'small world', and admits to having tried almost every technique in the book to take stunning images of his preferred subjects. He will be talking through many of these approaches, including the 'wideangle macro' technique that has come to be a distinguishing feature of his work. "I love the way it permits me to show a great subject in its habitat, mixing both landscape and portrait disciplines," he says.

As well as taking us on a trip around his 'small world' – from Italy to South America and Africa – Emanuele will be showing some of his studio work with jewel wasps as well as the latest projects that he's been involved with, including freshwater crabs and fen raft spiders. "It's not just hyenas and lions that exhibit great behaviour, and not only monkeys that can be loving mothers to their children," says Emanuele. "Big stories can be made in just a backyard corner."

MY WILD RUSSIAN QUESTA DOCUMENTARY CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME

SUNDAY, 10:05ONDAATJE THEATRE

Life for a photographer who's set themselves the ambitious task of photographing the whole of the Russian Arctic from east to west can certainly be 'full'. "I don't know how long this project will take me," admits Sergey. "At the moment, I'm working in the Chukchi Peninsula, Wrangel Island, the Taymyr Peninsula, the Putorana Plateau, and I have Novaya Zemlya, Franz Joseph Land and the New Siberian Islands in my sights too."

Sergey's session will include examples from his work on Wrangel Island, one of the most remote National Reserves in the Arctic. "Getting there is not easy," says Sergey. "It took more than a year to prepare. I had to take everything, including equipment, clothes and food, and in the winter the only way to get there is by helicopter. If bad weather hits the island, you may have to wait 20 days for the helicopter to return, and that can be tough."

Six years in the making, David's latest book documents the relationships between people and birds around the globe. "Before embarking on this project I had rarely shot portraits in my day to day professional work, so photographing people often in remote places on the planet in interesting ways was a new and exciting challenge," he reveals.

David's presentation will bring the Birds & People project vividly to life. He'll showcase not just exotic species such as Resplendent Quetzals and Japanese Cranes, but the many cultures that have deep connections with specific birds.

In fact, despite experiencing some incredible wonders of the natural world (listening to the haunting duets of Kokakos at dawn in New Zealand being one of many), it was "the encounters with people" that made for the most memorable moments during David's project, "not least the Sunday I spent photographing cockfighting on Palawan in the Philippines…"

THE MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS MODEL PROCESS , PRODUCTION AND POTENTIAL

SUNDAY, 11:55ONDAATJE THEATRE

Niall founded the Meet Your Neighbours 'field studio' concept with Clay Bolt in 2009, and the initiative, designed to highlight local biodiversity, now has almost 25 contributing photographers around the world. "Other projects using a similar approach had tended to focus on endangered species," says Niall. "We decided that this project should put the spotlight on common, overlooked ones that people had a chance of finding themselves. This is their first encounter with wild nature: interest them in what's in their own backyards and you have a hope of interesting them in bigger environmental issues." Early signs are encouraging: "We know that members of the public have been inspired to go and 'visit their own neighbours' with a camera as a result of seeing this work," says Niall, "and we see technology as a valid way of getting people to engage with the natural world."

Essential inspiration for those of us who find it hard to see the photographic potential close to home, Pål's presentation will explore the opportunities provided by two ordinary situations: a kindergarten and a 'car graveyard'.

"At the kindergarten, I have been able to follow the children through their day, and see how they explore nature by playing," says Pål. "They notice and comment on both tiny details and big views, without being preoccupied by any knowledge or attitudes. As photographers, we have a lot to learn from the explorative force of children."

Pål will also be looking at how nature takes back symbols of human engineering, wealth and status. "I'll be showing how plants, birds and animals occupy the man-made environment of a car graveyard. It's interesting how visiting people only see the Saabs, Opels and Volvos – and not the birds sitting in and on them. With a child's eye of curiosity, they would have discovered them."

Making images of predators in the wild often requires a mix of camera traps, uncomfortable hide work and tenacious character. But when the subject is an endangered big cat on the brink in the unforgiving terrain of the Russian Far East, the odds of getting a shot are truly stacked against you. "I set up camera traps for two years and suc-ceeded in taking just four images of Amur tigers," reveals Toshiji.

"A Russian colleague told me that the chance of photographing the Amur tiger from behind the camera would be less than ten per cent. However, I was very determined to get pictures this way, and I decided to stay in a small, specially constructed hut for one winter between 2011 and 2012."

During Toshiji's 74 days of waiting in the wild he only got one opportunity to see and photo-graph his rare subject. He'll be showing these hard-won images, and discussing his experience of chasing the world's largest wild cat.

It's hard enough to catch a fleeting glimpse of a European lynx, let alone produce a sharply composed photograph of one. "It is a very elusive animal, well camouflaged and living mostly in deep forest," says Laurent. "Some of the wardens I've been working with have only seen it three or four times in 20 years. So, naturally, there have been occasions where I have had to wait in a hide for days at a time…"

Laurent will be detailing the highs and lows of his three-year journey to track and photograph the cautious predator in the Jura Mountains and the Alps. As well as discussing the value of building a network of gamekeepers and hunters, he'll recall the stories behind his favourite images, such as the picture of a female and her kittens that he had to wait 96 hours without moving in order to get. "I brought some water with me, but no food and after four days I was starving."

ENCOURAGING NEW SHOOTS

"I think one of the biggest lessons I learnt quite early on was that you have to have a thick skin," says Jodie. The co-founder of the New Shoots blog, which offers a platform for young nature photographers to showcase their work, will be detailing the successes and setbacks she's experienced so far, in the hope that it will inspire the younger members of the audience.

Connor will be cramming plenty of tips into his session: "I will be talking about the importance of learning to use flash, understanding gear, weather, subject, and location, exploring local shooting opportunities, and gaining inspiration from others while also developing a personal style." We're sure that you'll find something in his presentation to spark your imagination…

A 19-year-old aspiring professional wildlife photographer, film-maker and presenter who's currently studying zoology at Bristol University, Bertie earned his wings as one the 2020Vision Young Champions photographing urban peregrine falcons in London and Bristol. He'll be talking about his experiences so far and showcasing a selection of his striking, beautifully composed images.
