It’s the 9th year of the Panarts songwriters’ festival and conference. Once again we have a great mix of local talent and award winning international artists. We’re putting songwriters centre stage and highlighting the importance of being creative. Over the 5 days we have concerts featuring different styles of writing from Folk to Rock and Comedy, Pop to Americana and Country. The 9th Song Writing Convention™ features many of the main artists and they are here to share

their skills. We’re looking at Intellectual Property, Royalties, and incomes streams, as it is very

important to protect what you have created. We’re exploring copyright and how to register your

trade mark or brand name. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Invest NI and the MU will talk

about the support available for songwriters (see pg 9 and www.belfastnashvile.com).

The songwriter and original member of The Christians, Henry Priestman wrote all the hit songs on their 1987 triple-platinum debut album!! As well as writing the hits ‘Ideal World’, ‘Born Again’, ‘Forgotten Town’, Henry has shared a mic and a No.1 single with Sir Paul McCartney, and composed the title song for London West End musical ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats.’ Nineteen year old Rae Morris has a maturity way beyond her age and displays a rare passion and confidence, unusual for such a young artist. Nanci Griffith’s superb ‘In the Round’ concerts at The Empire Music Hall have become a ‘must see’ festival event. Year after year, the Grammy Award winning songwriter returns to Belfast to share a stage with talented local artists and to work in local primary schools. This year Nanci is joined on stage by Morgan MacIntyre and Barry Kerr.

Barry Kerr is one of Ireland’s most accomplished traditional musicians. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and painter, he is extremely prolific in his creative output. His songs and compositions have been recorded

by Karan Casey, Flook, Damian O’Kane and Kate Rusby. Twenty year old local singer songwriter Morgan MacIntyre has already played support to another legend - Joan Armatrading. Morgan is a story teller with a haunting voice whose music has been called ‘extraordinary’ by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody.

Gary Quinn puts a lot of energy into his acoustic driven performance of rock infused country.

In 2012, Gary showcased his songs in Nashville, at the BelNash Showcase events, and returned to Nashville in June to be part of the annual Country Music Associations Festival (CMA). Creating quite a buzz, Raintown are being hailed as the UK’s answer to Lady Antebellum. Great song writing, passion drenched delivery and dynamic harmonies. In 2012 they won two awards at the Scottish New Music Awards.

Brian Hughes is one of the UK’s finest ‘Modern Country’ songwriters. To date he has released 4 albums and has won the British Country Music Awards, Album of the Year twice.

Grammy Award winning songwriter Brett James has become one of the most successful writers in the music business with more than 300 of his songs recorded by some of the industry’s biggest artists including Carrie Underwood and Leona Lewis. With an ear toward the past and an eye on the future, chart topping artist Chris Young is quickly distinguishing himself as a newcomer who honours country music’s best traditions while

adding a fresh, new chapter to the genre’s legacy. Local talent John Farry has written songs for several artists including Brendan Quinn, Robert Mizzell and reached No.1 with a hit for Daniel O’Donnell. CMA Songwriters Series with BMI & Gibson Guitar presents Kristian Bush and Bob DiPiero sharing the stage with local artist Gary Quinn.Grammy winner Kristian Bush has taken a break from filling stadiums as half of country superstar duo Sugarland to perform intimate acoustic concerts at this year’s festival. A dynamic live performer and multi-instrumentalist, Kristian has also won six BMI Awards for his songwriting abilities. One of Nashville’s most consistent and prolific writers of hits, Bob DiPiero remains at the top of his profession more than two decades after hitting number one on the charts for the first time in 1983.

Critically acclaimed singer and songwriter Brian Kennedy recorded his first album ‘The Great War of Words’ in 1990. ‘A Better Man’ his next release consolidated his reputation as a great songwriter with the album going to No.1 and onto quadruple platinum sales in Ireland. Over the years Nanci Griffith has been a wonderful supporter of the Belfast Nashville Songwriters’ Festival in both cities. In addition to the great concerts, each year in support of the Panarts Inter-community programme, Nanci visits Belfast primary schools to work with pupils and to encourage them to be creative.

For the past eight years the festival has taken four local songwriters over to Nashville to showcase their music. At these annual events Nanci often shares the stage with Belfast songwriters and has introduced them to other

international writers and influential music industry people.

Throughout her career the Grammy winning singer-songwriter has released 20 CDs, the latest ‘Intersection’. This album was co-produced with The Kennedys (Maura & Pete) who join Nanci on stage.

Over the past two decades Brian Kennedy has enjoyed success with songs such as ‘A Better Man’, ‘Life, Love and Happiness’ and ‘Get on with Your Short Life.’ He has shared the stage with Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Van Morrison, who he accompanied on five albums. Tom Baxter emerged in 2004 as one of London’s premier underground singer/songwriters and soon became a major force in the live music scene. His song ‘Better’ featured on the movie soundtrack for ‘Run Fatboy Run’ and the beautiful song ‘Miracle’ was used by the BBC during its Olympic coverage. The very talented Gareth Dunlop performed his songs at the Panarts showcase concerts in Nashville 2010 and from that was

offered a publishing contract. In 2011 he was the winner of the ‘Katherine Brick Young Songwriter Award.’ Since then he has been busy touring in America and recording. His songs have featured in American television shows and films.
