Who or What

Purpose but So

Monterozzi Has the most famous cemeteries in the world

They are not like other cemeteries

They are painted tombs carved out of rock as houses for the after live

Etruscans Built the tombs Their language is difficult to decipher

We study their paintings.

Tarquinia Provides archaeologists evidence of artistic styles and tastes of the Etruscans

But it reflects only the life of the wealthiest Etruscans.

So, we know little of what the poor Etruscans thought of life and death.

Romans Borrowed many features of the Etruscan’s culture

But many were frightened by the cemeteries

So it was not until 1489, that an excavation of the tombs took place.

Water and neglect

Destroyed some of the tombs`

Visitor notes and sketchbooks Provide information no longer “obtainable from the tombs themselves” p356.
