Ladles from hand-held to 200-ton models Since 1884, Whiting has developed ladles forvirtually every holding and pouring requirement. These range n size from hand ladles as small as7” in diameter to 200-ton giants built to AISE specifications. There are more than 200 models, styles and sizes.

Our taper side ladles are available in hand andshank models, plus a range of larger sizes fortrolley or crane handling. We also build taperside truck ladles, with or without bail for cranehook. We make cylindrical pouring ladles andfloor or truck-mounted U-ladles. Also reservoirladles, including those with elliptical bowls foruse in limited space. We design special ladlesfor special requirements.

Whiting ladles are available with lip pour, bottomtap or outside teapot spout. They can be ofwelded construction with plain or anti-frictionbearings, covered or open top. There are threetypes of time-tested gear brackets.

Whiting mastery of ladling applications isparticularly beneficial in the design of completepouring systems. Our engineers are at yourservice from initial planning to installation.

Pertinent Facts About Whiting Ladles

REFRACTORIES

All Whiting Ladles are furnished exclusive of re-fractories (i.e., in the ladle bowl and cover, and bottom-tap rods). Capacities stated in the specification tablesare recommended and will vary according to the liningused and top allowance specified. BALANCE

All ladles are designed to hang plumb when filledto their recommended capacity, and will tip slightlytoward the tilting mechanism when partly filled orempty. Trunnions are so placed that the ladle may betilted (for pouring) with minimum physical exertion, whether full, partly full, or nearly empty. RIGHT HAND POUR

Whiting Ladles will be furnished with right handpour unless otherwise specified. Ladles are consideredright hand pour when the pouring lip is at the operator’s right as he stands facing the tipping mechanism. Thisapplies to all types of Whiting Ladles—taper side, cylindrical, teapot spout, and geared bottom tap. POURING LIPS

Whiting Crane Ladles (pages 12, 13, 14, 15) areprovided with two pouring lips, one on each side, andhence may be used for either right or left hand pour.

Whiting Covered Ladles (pages 4, 5, 6, 7,11) havebut one pouring lip and are right hand pour. Thisapplies to both hand lever tilt and geared ladles. DIMENSIONS

All dimensions in this catalog are APPROXIMATE,and are given in inches; capacities in pounds.

Hand and shank ladles may be obtained in sizes

ranging from 7 in. up to 23 in. diameter. The bowls

are made of heavy rolled steel plate and are of all-

welded construction (8½’, 10 and 11” bowls are

pressed steel). The tapered sides afford a simple,

trouble-free suspension in the forged steel belt.

Shanks are solid steel bars forged to the

suspension belt. Gas pipe handles may be

obtained on request on sizes 7 in. to 8½ in.

A detachable steel bail can be furnished for

ladles 12 in. in diameter and up, if desired for use

with an overhead crane, hoist or trolley.

STRAIGHT OR OFFSET SHANK

Taper Side with V-Bail These ladles, of all-welded high strength construc-

tion, offer the latest advance in ladle engineering.

The bowl is suspended on a basket type shank

that simplifies lining by permitting easy removal of

the bowl. This type of suspension also provides

for expansion of the bowl, thus avoiding lining

cracks. Bowls are provided with an extra long

spout for more accurate pouring and less spillage.

Three key bolts hold the bowl in place, and an

air gap between the bowl and shank prevents

direct heat transfer to the trunnion shafts,

extending their ser vice life.

The cover is carried on three levers hinged to

the shank, so that distortion in the bowl cannot

bind the cover hinge action. A skirt on the rear half

of the cover deflects heat and fumes from the

bowl to protect the operator. Furnished with

straight or offset shanks.

These ladles have welded construction with basket

type suspension that permits easy removal of the

bowl for relining. The trunnion bearings are

protected by an air gap that also accommodates

bowl expansion. Bowls are provided with an extra

long spout for more accurate pouring and less

spillage.

Binding in the cover hinges is eliminated, since

they are mounted directly on the shank and are un-

affected by distortion of the bowl. The cover itself is

skirted over its rear half for protection of the ladle

operator.

Trunnion bearings are of the antifriction self-align-

ing type for ease of operation, and are sealed

against dirt and shot for long, trouble-free operation.

Furnished with straight or offset shanks. Bail is

drilled for Ladle Handler or bail attachment eye.

WHITING LADLE

HANDLER … a low-cost way to easier, faster pouring Ladle Handlers, used with light cranes or trolleys, make itpossible for one man to do the pouring. They have beencarefully designed to facilitate speed and accuracy, whileproviding easy handling of hot metal with greatest pos-sible safety to the operator.

Pouring fatigue is minimized by easy maneuverability, low lifting wheel pull, and over-all simplicity of operation. The entire mechanism is rigid, swiveling at the point ofsuspension. The swivel hook has a heat-resisting thrust bearing. The bail attachment is rotatable so that the ladlemay be set at any desired angle to the handwheel.

This Ladle Handler has safety features of extreme im-portance. The load is carried on a newly developedshielded roller chain and sprocket with multi-tooth loading. The mechanical brake is totally enclosed, protecting itagainst dust, shot, fumes and heat. Bearing surfaces are specially hardened, and high safety factors are provided throughout the construction...for example, a factor of 10+in the chain.

Thus every care has been taken in designing this LadleHandler to provide easy, safe operation and long life. The comparatively small investment required for a Ladle Han-dler will soon be repaid in increased pouring efficiencyand savings in manpower.

Recommended Ladle Handlers to use with various sizeladles are shown in the ladle tables in this catalog. Stan-dard lifts for Ladle Handlers are shown in the table onopposite page...special lifts can be furnished on request.

Ladle Handlers may be se-cured with lifts as shown in thetable on opposite page. Do notselect a longer lift than is re-quired to enter the ladle underthe tap spout, because this willreduce the maximum heightmold that can be poured.

In order to select the correct lift,it is desirable to make a trialcalculation. Dimensions K, Y,and Z may be secured by actual measurements of the tap spout, monorail, and trolley; or takenfrom blueprints if the equipment isnot yet installed. Dimensions B, C,F, H, and L are given in the tablecovering the size and style ladleselected. Dimensions R (max.) and R (min.) are given in the LadleHandler table on the oppositepage. Substitute these dimensions and work out Formula No. I or No.2, depending on the style ladle tobe used.

FORMULA #1 for taper side ladles

Z minus K must be less than Yplus R (max.) plus H minus B, for ladle to go under tap spout.

FORMULA #2 for cylindrical ladles

7 minus K must be less than Yplus R(max.) plus H minus C, for ladle to go under tap spout.

FORMULA #3 If the above calculation proves

the selected lift is satisfactory, work out Formula No. 3 to deter-mine the maximum height moldthat can be poured.

From 7 subtract the sum of Y,R(min.), F, and L, to determinemaximum mold height.

HOW WHITING LADLES WITH SPECIAL LINERS ARE USED FOR FERROUS AND NONFERROUS MATERIALS

Larger castings than were formerly consideredpractical are being poured in nonferrousfoundries today. Pouring them successfullydepends upon a ladle of adequate size thatprovides freedom from contamination. The scaling of iron ladles, and the spalling inmonolithic or mud linings eliminate theirusefulness for nonferrous metals.

Whiting has adapted a graphite type liner foruse with Whiting Ladles that not only eliminatescontamination, but supplies thermal insulationfor constant temperature pouring as well. Theladle liner is set on a nonconductive layer offiller, and the remaining space along the sidesof the bowl is tamped full of the filler material, giving the qualities of a good crucible, with the strength of a ladle.

All types of Whiting Ladles may be used withladle liners in sizes indicated in the table below.

A.I.S.E. LADLES

Whiting Corporation has designed and furnished manyladles to the steel mill and foundry industry that meetA.I.S.E. standard No.9 for hot metal ladles. Thesespecifications cover the type of materials to be used infabrication and the design criteria for various ladlecomponents such as trunnion pins, bases, stiffenerribs, thickness of side plates and bottom.

Whiting standard A.I.S.E. ladles are of welded con-struction and are stress relieved after welding. Trun-nion bases are lined bored for proper alignment priorto installation of machined trunnion shafts. Theseladles can be furnished with lifting bails designed toA.I.S.E. specification No. 7 featuring bail hook armsfabricated from laminated steel plates of welded andriveted construction.

Heavy duty steel mill bottom tap rigs are availablewith A.I.S.E. ladles and have a swivel operating leverwhich can be rotated 180° for most convenient operat-ing position or with a hydraulic cylinder operator. Rigsare provided with accurately machined slides sealedagainst metal shot and mill atmosphere to provide longtrouble free life.

If your ladle specifications call for A.I.S.E. standards, call Whiting. We have standard models ranging from5-200 tons plus the capabilities to design one thatmeets your exact requirements.

22

A slide bearing, pivoted on a bracket bolted to thebowl, forms the tap mechanism used in Bottom-Tap Ladles. The action is controlled by a levermounted at the side of the bowl. A rack and sectorarrangement provides easy adjustment of the gear mesh so that the handle may be set to suitthe operator. On ladles 48½ in. in diameter andlarger, the handle is detachable near the slide.

The slide itself is almost fully enclosed forprotection against dirt and spillage, while an apronon the gooseneck prevents metal from splashingagainst the machined surfaces of the slide. Theslide is adjusted by a single screw so thatadjustments can be made quickly with thepossibility of distorting the slide eliminated. Setscrews permit adjustment for side wear, whileshims under the clamping plate permit correctionfor wear in the other direction.

The gooseneck has a tapered stem, fitting intothe slide with slots so that a wedge key can beused to draw the stem into the slide and hold it inposition. The same key can be used to removethe gooseneck from the slide. A lifting eye isfurnished for handling the gooseneck when it isnot in use on the ladle. With the gooseneckremoved, the slide can be dropped completelybelow the level of the bowl to protect it from overheating while the lining is being dried.

A liberal supply of lubricant is furnished bygrease pockets with Alemite fittings, assuringeasy operation at all times, and long life.

TAPER SIDE LADLES – LINING WEIGHTS Ladle lining practice varies throughout the industry. Due to special heats, temperature requirements, casting size, etc., heavier or thinner linings are often used in the same size ladle. The approximate weights of various linings as installed for standard ladlesare tabled below for your convenience. These weights are based on a refractory density of 138 lbs./cu. ft. If the refractory actually employed has a substantially different density, simply divide by 138 and multiply by the actual density in lbs./cu. ft. In furnishinglinings, it is necessary to add an allowance for breakage or loss during installation. All Whiting ladle are furnished unlined.

The production of ductile iron requires ladle dimensions

to contain the process and recover a maximum

percentage of magnesium. With this thought in mind

Whiting Engineers have designed a complete new line of

ladles to meet these requirements. These ladles have a

high depth-to-diameter ratio and trunnion location has

been carefully calculated to permit easy pour off of the

moLten metal.

Bowls are of all welded construction and fabricated

from heavy steel plate to contain the reaction. A forged

V-Bail and trunnion band assembly are provided with

self-aligning antifriction type trunnion bearings. Bowls

can be removed from band assembly for relining and can

be interchanged with spare bowls of the same size.

Plunging hoods with rods can be furnished if desired.

BLOWER TYPE INSPIRATOR TYPE

SPECIFICATIONS

Swivel Type for Taper Side Ladles oper drying and preheating of ladle linings can have

much effect on casting quality as any other foundry

eration. Recognizing a need for this type of

uipment, Whiting has designed a line of pre-heaters

r use with taper side ladles. It provides uniform,

ntrolled, efficient heating and drying of the ladle

ings combined with ease of operation and safety.

The equipment consists of a swing-type mast with a

pporting base for floor mounting, I-beam pivoting

tension arm with a structural fabricated conical ladle

ver with anchors for refractories. The pivoting arm

th cover and burner can be rotated through an arc of

proximately 1800 and accurately positioned over a

dle.

The burner system includes low pressure burners

r gas or oil, fuel and air valves. Combustion air can

supplied by a turbo blower with totally enclosed fan

oled motor or compressed plant air through an

spirator.

NOTE: When ordering, please specify the type of

ater (blower or inspirator), fuel available, electrical

aracteristic and altitude (if over 500 feet) above sea
