Because the commonwealth is rich in history, it stands to reason that we’ve had more than our share of historic fi gures in residence. Ten years ago, I wrote an article titled “Historic Homes of Famous Penn-sylvanians,” which featured the homes of

famous people such as William Penn, Dan-iel Boone and Betsy Ross. Since then, I’ve wanted to write another installment of PA’s historic homes because there are so many more to visit. Some of these individuals are more famous than others, but they are all

very interesting characters indeed.

HISTORIC WAYNESBOROUGH

Historic Waynesborough was the birthplace and home of Revolution-ary War general Anthony Wayne. His nickname “Mad” Anthony was as-signed to him as a result of his repu-tation as a hothead and a strict disci-plinarian. It’s likely that much of his success as a leader was due in part to strict discipline. The ragtag bunch of farmers and merchants turned sol-diers certainly needed it. In spite of his reputation—or because of it, he was a leader that men wanted to follow.

With close proximity to Philadelphia, Valley Forge and the Brandywine Battlefi eld, Waynes-borough is a valuable stop on a Revolutionary War road trip.

After his military career, Wayne retired to Waynesborough to live out his years in quiet with his wife Polly. Retirement lasted only ten years be-fore the president asked him to serve as major general and commander-in-chief of the Legions of America.

Located in Paoli, Chester County, Waynesborough is just minutes from the fi elds where Wayne led his troops into battle. Tours of the home are given Thursday through Sunday, March 31 to mid-December. While visiting, you may want to make the short 5-mile trip to Valley Forge National Military Park.

FONTHILL CASTLE

Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) was an archaeologist and an-thropologist, but it was his work with ceramic tiles for which he is best known. In fact, if you’ve visited the PA State Capitol building, you’ve walked on them. Mercer was a major pro-ponent of the Arts & Crafts Movement in America.

Between 1908 and 1912, Mercer built Fonthill Castle, made of poured concrete. The structure served a dual purpose as both his home and a showplace for his Moravian tiles. In its design he included elements of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architec-tural styles.

Fonthill, in Doylestown, Bucks County, is open for tours throughout the year, but reservations are strongly recommended. Plan to spend the day in Doylestown to experience the extent of Mercer’s infl uence on the area. His Moravian Pottery and Tile Works are located adjacent to Fonthill. This

“working history” museum still produces handmade tiles using a method similar to its founder and builder.

You’ll need to travel about a mile down the road to the Mercer Museum to truly get a glimpse into the eclectic nature of Henry Chapman Mercer. His vast collection of ap-proximately 40,000 objects is a veritable walk through 18th and 19th-century life in America. From important pieces of history to a 19th-century vampire kit, 55 exhibit rooms are fi lled with a treasury of pre-In-dustrial Revolution history. Like Fonthill and the Tile Works, Henry Chapman Mer-cer built the formidable structure that hous-es his collection.

Fonthill Castle is truly a one-of-a-kind des-tination. The annual Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, held on the grounds of Fonthill, is a family-friendly festival with turn-of-the-cen-tury games, picnic foods and patriotic music.

PENNYPACKER MILLS

Pennypacker Mills (title photo) was the country estate of Pennsylvania Governor Samuel Pennypacker (1843-1916). The fi rst Pennypacker (Pannebacker) to reside in the circa 1720 Colonial Revival mansion was Peter Pannebacker in 1747.

As a young man, Pennypacker enlist-ed in the Army after General Lee invaded Pennsylvania in 1863. His company of sol-diers was among the fi rst to engage the Con-federates at Gettysburg.

Like his father and grandfather before him, Pennypacker’s interest in public ser-vice led him into the political realm. Samu-el Pennypacker served as Pennsylvania gov-ernor from 1903 to 1907. The boom of the Industrial Revolution was the catalyst for many social issues of the day. Pennypacker is remembered for passing the Child Labor Act of 1905, which set the minimum age for factory and mine workers at 14. A staunch conservationist, Samuel Pennypacker also created the position of commissioner of for-estry.

Today, Pennypacker Mills is furnished with the antiques collected by the former governor. The collection includes some of his political and personal papers. The Schwenksville, Montgomery County, estate hosts tours, exhibits, workshops and special

events throughout the year.

GREY TOWERS

Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, fi rst Chief of the Forest Service and two-term governor of PA. Lo-cated in the quaint town of Mil-ford, Pike County, Grey Towers was originally built by Pinchot’s parents as a summer home. No doubt this beautiful location in-fl uenced Gifford’s father to en-courage his son to pursue a career in forestry.

The burgeoning lumber in-dustry of the 19th century had a profound and, in some instances, devastating effect on the nation’s natural resources. Like his father, Gifford Pinchot was concerned by this reality and led to his estab-lishment the U.S. Forest Service.

In 1963, the Pinchot family donated Grey Towers and the 102 acres surround-ing the estate to the U.S. Forestry Service. Today, the Pinchot legacy continues at Grey Towers through conservation education, events, tours, and walks.

JOSEPH PRIESTLEY HOUSE

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) may not be considered a household name, but he identifi ed something in 1774 that we can’t live without – oxygen. Priestley was a renaissance man who counted among his friends Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His accomplished life included being a well-known theologian and politi-cal progressive. Some of his ideas were so

controversial for the time that his home in Birmingham, England, was burned in a riot. After that frightening incident, Priest-ley moved his family across the Atlantic to Northumberland, Pennsylvania. It was dur-ing his time in Pennsylvania that Priestley correctly identifi ed carbon monoxide.

Today, the Joseph Priestley House is a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Chemical Landmark. The furnish-ings inside the house refl ect the time period when he was in residence. Tours are avail-able weekends from mid-March through November.

ZANE GREY MUSEUM

Though it is the American West that made him famous, Zane Grey called the banks of Upper Delaware River home. As a young man, Grey lived in New York but would retreat to Lackawaxen, PA, for his favorite pastime, fi shing. It was on one of these trips that he met his wife, Lina Elise Roth, or “Dolly” as he called her. After mar-rying in 1905, the couple settled in a farm-house overlooking the confl uence of the Lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers. It was here, in 1912, that Grey penned his most noted book, “Riders of the Purple Sage.”

Though Grey loved his home in Pike County, he often visited the Southwest, where he gained inspiration for some of his books. Zane and Dolly lived in their Lacka-waxen retreat with their three children until 1918, when they moved to California. Zane Grey was a prolifi c writer whose success allowed him to fi sh all over the world. In fact, he held more than ten world records for large game fi sh. He was also the fi rst per-son to catch a fi sh over 1,000 pounds with a rod and reel (a 1,040- pound blue marlin in 1930 in Tahiti).

The treasured home of the Grey family from 1905 to 1918 is now the Zane Grey Museum. Visitors are able to take a free self-guided tour with National Park Service

rangers and volunteers on hand. Grey’s of-fi ce and study hold memorabilia, books, and photographs of one of America’s most beloved authors. The museum is typically open Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Bring a headlamp to see through the Ray’s Hill and Sidling Hill tunnels, which are the shortest and longest tunnels, respectively, on the turnpike.

Th e Allegheny Mountains boast some of the most beautiful landscapes within the commonwealth. Within these mountains there are many unique and alluring settings for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, running, and camping are plentiful across PA, but in the Allegh-enies, they are particularly spectacular to enjoy.

Several years ago I ex-perienced my fi rst taste of the Alleghenies when I traveled west to a stretch of abandoned turnpike lo-cated in Bedford County. In use from 1940 to 1968, this 8.5-mile section of turnpike, located off the Breezewood Exit on Tan-nery Road, was eventually abandoned and bypassed due to traffi c and bottle-neck issues. More recently used as a testing ground for

For those not up for the risk of explor-ing abandoned places, mountain biking en-thusiasts may fi nd joy at Dirt Fest, a time for fellow velocipedes to enjoy camping, music, and entertainment in Huntingdon County on the Allegrippis Trail System. From May 17 to 19 this year, the area ex-pects over 2,000 bikers to traverse trails that range from beginner to expert in diffi culty. Paddling is another popular sport in the Alleghenies. In Raystown Lake, an 8,300-acre lake de-signed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engi-neers, Rothrock Outfi tters (ro-throckoutfitters.com) provides canoe and kayak rentals, shuttle service, and even guided overnight trips. If you’re in town for Dirt Fest or to cycle the Allegrippis Trails, you can also visit them for bicycle rentals.

Juniata River Adventures (juniatariv-eradventures.com) provides similar services along the Juniata River, which fl ows 104 miles in central Pennsylvania from Dau-phin to Somerset counties. Besides pad-dling excursions, visitors can also try out fi shing and river tubing outings.

Two state parks in the Alleghenies are considered by the Pennsylvania Depart-ment of Conservation and Natural Re-sources (DCNR) to be amongst their top

20 parks. Canoe Creek State Park in Hol-lidaysburg, Blair County, is home to a lake and wetlands, and it even boasts one of the largest bat populations in Pennsylvania. Bird lovers will also particularly enjoy this park.

James Creek in Huntingdon County is home to Trough Creek State Park. Here you will fi nd mountains, waterfalls, and spectacular hiking trails that lead to a scenic gorge that eventually runs into Raystown Lake. Th is park and surrounding lands are all part of recreational areas open for public use.

Hiking is plentiful in these parks and in several other public recreation areas in the Alleghenies. Buchanon State Forest, in Franklin, Fulton and Bedford counties, protects over 69,000 acres of wooded scen-ery, and trails. Both the Mid State and Tus-carora foot trails permeate the forest, off er-ing ascents, vistas, and descents well worth the eff ort. ATV trails and cross country trails are also available.

woods, he put the past, present and future of the commonwealth in its very name. Woods, in-cluding some spectacular old growth forest found sparingly in the Bear Meadows, Alan Seeger and Detweiler Run Natu-ral Areas in the northern part of the Allegh-enies (near State College) are still a prominent fea-ture across much of Pennsylva-nia. Th ey are the highlight of any hike, bicycle ride, and paddle down shaded, tree-lined rivers and lakes. Th e Alleghenies help outdoor pioneers to get acquainted with the memorable nature of Penn-sylvania.

celebrated at the Subaru Cherry Blos-som Festival of Greater Philadelphia. For almost a month, the series of events takes place April 1 through 26 at venues throughout the city. With pink and white cherry blossoms as a backdrop, visi-tors can experience Japanese culture through art, music, and, of course, food. Several special children’s story hours are planned at city libraries during the festi-val.

The centerpiece of the festival is the Sakura (cherry blos-som trees) Sunday celebration on April 14 in the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center. Situated along the banks of the Schuylkill River, Fairmount Park is one of the nation’s oldest and largest municipal ly-oper-ated parks. It has

As the national fl ower of Japan, cherry blossoms are sometimes given to other nations as a symbol of friendship.

It was one such gesture of goodwill that has helped paint the colorful Phila-delphia landscape each spring. In honor of the 150th anniversary of our indepen-dence in 1926, the Japanese government pre-sented Philadel-phia with 1,600 fl owering trees, including orna-mental cherry trees.

been called a museum without walls for its vast collection of outdoor sculpture. The vibrant colors of spring enhance the park’s beauty and make it the perfect venue for the event.

Sakura Sunday is an effervescent Japanese celebration of spring that will delight your senses with live music and dance performances, martial-arts dem-onstrations, crafts such as origami and calligraphy, and amazing food. The day will also include the Prettiest Pet in Pink Parade for dogs; the Harajuku Fashion Show, featuring designs inspired by To-kyo’s unique Harajuku District; and a 5k.

The Cherry Blossom Festival wraps up on April 26 with the Blossom Bash at the Hyatt at the Bellevue. The evening will feature a Japanese fusion menu as well as live music and traditional and contemporary Japanese entertainment. A silent auction will have guests bidding on Asian art and jewelry, Philly destina-tion packages with a Japanese fl avor, Trans-Pacifi c airfare tickets, and more.

Nowadays, people get really excit-ed about repurposing. All you have to do is look at the popularity of Pinterest. The site is chock-full of projects that turn nearly anything into something to be treasured.

Converting old, unused railroad beds into usable recreational trails is one of the best examples of repur-posing that I can think of. These projects have been going on for decades and continue today. With a total of 162, Penn-sylvania has more rail trails than any other state in the U.S., which makes sense when you consider the state’s rich railroad history.

One very anticipated Rails-to-Trails project, the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), is now nearing completion. The organization in charge of this effort is the Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA). The ATA is a coalition of seven trail orga-nizations from western Maryland and

southwestern Pennsylvania working together to bring the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage to fruition.

This multiple purpose rail-trail sys-tem connects Cumberland, Md., to Pittsburgh, Pa. The Great Allegheny Passage is part of the Potomac Heri-tage National Scenic Trail, which is one of only eight in the country. The trail travels through Pennsylvania’s beauti-ful Laurel Highlands. Small towns like

Meyersdale, Confl uence and Ohio-pyle complement the

GAP with their unique charm, which

doesn’t go un-noticed by out-

door enthusiasts who frequent

the trail. This com-bination of lovely towns and pristine scenery makes the Great Allegheny Passage the perfect way to enjoy PA’s greatest natural re-source, its landscape. The nearly level trail takes you along scenic rivers, quaint towns and shady glens.


The fi nal stretch of the GAP, between Home-stead and Pittsburgh, is expected to be complete in June. At the southern end of the GAP, the trail connects with the C&O Canal Towpath, creating a 335-mile motor-free route between D.C. and Pittsburgh.

Wheth-er you’re p l a n n i n g to travel the trail by foot or two wheels, you should d e f i n i te l y check out the Great Al legheny P a s s a g e website for i n fo r m a -tion like trail grade and surface, maps and even trail etiquette.

Two bicycle rides are planned for the summer. From July 14 to 21, the inaugural EFI Ride will cover Every Final Inch of the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Pas-

sage. The Great GAP Ride will be held Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. This ride will take bicyclists on a red carpet tour along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage. The proceeds from both rides will ben-efi t the GAP.
