As I write, I am contemplating my upcoming adventure. I will be attending

Women in the Wilds at Mt. Pisgah State Park. I even got my 21-year-old daugh-

ter to join me! This should be quite an experience.

You see, it’s all about getting in touch

with nature. If you know anything about

me, this really puts me out of my ele-

ment. However, I did grow up on a

farm, and I married into a farm family

that’s big on hunting, so I guess I should

have seen it coming. Right?

Mom and my sister-in-law went last year

and had a great time. They learned

some shooting tips from the Shooting

Events instructor (son and brother to the aforementioned attendees. Was that

really a smart idea, Bro?) Anyway, they convinced the rest of us that it would

be a fun girls’ day out. So, the “Wilcox Girls,” as we fondly refer to ourselves,

have signed up.

Some events include Animal Calling, Canning and Freezing, Archery, Fiber Crafts,

Canoeing/Kayaking, Holistic Healing and Nature Writing. Of course, what I really

like is that we get breakfast, lunch and snacks included in the deal, and we don’t

even have to make it ourselves! All kidding aside, I really am looking forward to

this event. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done. I’m up for the challenge. Who

knows, I may even bring back a pair of bullet earrings for the staff members!

Like us on Facebook and follow my adventure with Women in the Wilds!

Marty and her daughter Emily gearing up for their adventure in the Wilds.

Pennsylvania has no shortage of inns and B&Bs. They vary from ornate to rustic, historic to modern. But they all have one thing in common -- inn-keepers, people who have a vested in-terest in making your stay memorable for the right reason. Hotels will always have the lion’s share of the lodging in-dustry. I’ve stayed in plenty and will continue to do so. For the most, part travelers who stay in hotels don’t want the memories they make on vacation to have much to do with their hotel. For many, the hotel is basically a base of operations at the beginning and end of the day. We just want a friendly smile, warm shower and a clean, comfortable bed. Those who choose to stay in a B&B want those things too, but with a little extra something.

Fearing the Unknown

When questioned, the majority of travelers say they prefer to stay at chain hotels rather than a bed and breakfast, which isn‘t surprising when you con-sider that the marketing budgets of most B&Bs are miniscule when com-pared to hotel chains. Many travelers are appre-hensive about staying in a bed and breakfast, and without proper research those fears go unchecked.

Common Concerns:

1. Sharing a bathroom with other guests2. Talking to strangers over breakfast3. No privacy4. None of the modern conveniences of a hotel

Bathrooms: You’ll fi nd that the many of rooms in B&Bs have private baths. If your room does not, the innkeeper will inform you of that in advance.

Breakfast: Its true B&Bs aren’t for ev-eryone. Some people fear that eating breakfast with strangers will be uncom-fortable, but most experience some-thing quite the opposite. A family-style breakfast allows guests to share their experiences and pick up great travel ad-vice. But, if you still want a more private meal, many B&Bs will allow your break-fast to be served in your room.

1

Page 9: Fall 2011 Where & When, Pennsylvania's Travel Guide

9 - W&W Fall 2011

Privacy: If you stay in a very small inn, you are more apt to feel like you have little privacy. If that is an issue for you, you may want to look for an inn with at least fi ve guest rooms.

Modern Conveniences: Many B&Bs are restored older homes with period furnishings and ornate details. Don’t let the ambiance fool you. Innkeepers want nothing more than to see to your com-fort. Many guestrooms are equipped with TVs and wireless Internet. Check with your innkeeper prior to your visit if those in-room amenities are a must.

Having said all that, let’s look at some of Pennsylvania’s amazing inns and B&Bs.

These are just a few of the incred-ible B&Bs in the Commonwealth. We’re all looking to save money wherever we can, so it’s always wise to do your research and fi nd those that offer spe-cial packages, which often include lo-cal attractions and events. Some offer discounts for last-minute bookings, but I’m not sure I’d take the risk of waiting too long to save 15 to 20 percent. An-other important tip: If you are traveling with children, make sure the inn is kid-friendly. Many B&Bs are now offering pet-friendly rooms as well. Lastly, if you are planning a romantic retreat, the am-biance of a quaint and cozy inn makes Cupid’s job a lot easier.

Try a bed and breakfast on your next getaway, and don’t be surprised if you come back with not just great memo-ries, but lifelong friends.

The small Potter County town of Austin, located halfway be-

tween Coudersport and Emporium, has a population of roughly 600 people. It’s a quiet town where every-one seems to know each other and the hands on the town clock seem to move at a slower pace. But, that was not always the case. Around the turn of the 20th century, Austin was a bustling lumber town fi lled with woodhicks (immigrant workers who were employed by the lumber indus-try) and taverns. In many ways the town was like the Wild West. When the men weren’t working, they were often found in the saloons gambling and drinking. Fights were not uncom-mon in a town where there was little else to do.

In the late 1800s, the town sprung up along Freeman Run, which cut through forests of Pine, Hemlock and Cherry, making it an ideal location for the lumber indus-try. Once the old growth timber was stripped from the land, the pulp and

paper industry replaced the sawmills. Several paper mills existed in the area, but the largest and most powerful was the Bayliss Pulp and Paper Company, which was located just upstream from Austin. For the paper mills to operate, they required a plentiful supply of wa-ter. After some water shortages, Bayliss hired a civil engineer and quickly got to work to construct a dam on Free-man Run.

The concrete and reinforced steel dam was a major engineering feat in 1909. It was 534 feet long, stood 50 feet high and held 275 million gal-lons of water. Unfortunately, in order to cut costs, Bayliss ignored many of the design recommendations made by the engineer. These design fl aws led to a near disaster in 1910, when a spring thaw caused the structure to

bow more than 36 feet. Repairs were made, and although people were still con-cerned about the stability of the dam, the importance of employment took precedence over their fears.

The Bayliss Dam as it looked pri-or to the disaster that claimed nearly 80 lives.

On Sept. 30, 1911, after an unusu-ally rainy month, the Bayliss Pulp and Paper Dam gave way. On that fateful day, one of Austin’s most scandal-ous residents became a heroine in a matter of minutes. Cora Brooks, the proprietor of a brothel that stood on a hill above the town, heard the dam quake under the pressure of the burgeoning water. She quickly called Austin’s telephone operator, who, then ran through the streets with her co-worker screaming that the dam had broken. Cora watched helplessly as millions of gallons of water broke free of the concrete and steel and car-ried an estimated 700,000 cords of pulpwood and debris downstream in a raging torrent. Although Cora’s early warning was credited with sav-ing many lives, 78 people are known to have died in the disaster. The event

gave Austin the dubious distinction of having survived the second-worst fl ood disaster in Pennsylvania, be-hind Johnstown.

CENTENNIAL EVENT

The town of Austin will observe the 100th anniversary of the fl ood on Friday, Sept. 30, to Sunday, Oct. 2. The resilient little town will hold a commemorative ceremony honor-

Vintage photo taken before the fl ood shows Austin as a bustling town that had fi ve times more residents than today.

Today, Austin bears little resem-blance to the gritty town that existed around the turn-of-the-century. Visi-tors will experience the spirit of com-munity fi rsthand at the centennial event.

ing the fl ood victims at 2 p.m. on Friday. Don’t expect the entire event to be a somber occasion, however. Games, food and entertainment will make the Austin Flood Centennial a celebration fi t for a town that has overcome overwhelming obstacles and lived to tell about it.

The festivities will be served up 1911-style, as Austin will be decked out in its turn-of-the-cen-tury fi nery. Living history actors will portray the lives of the woodhicks and villain-turned-her-oine Cora Brooks. Visi-tors will have the unique opportunity to trace the path of the fl ood in a tethered hot air balloon 200 feet in the air. In ad-dition, there will be demonstrations,

displays, tours, vendors, storytelling and live music. At high noon on Sun-day, people will fl ock to Austin’s Town

Square to witness an event sel-dom seen. T h a t ’ s right, the bed races are coming to town, and all eyes will be riveted to Main Street as the fear-less racers speed to

the fi nish line in less than 40 winks!Like generations before them,

the residents of Austin are rolling up their sleeves and getting busy striv-ing to make the Flood Centennial a very special event. For a full sched-ule of events, log on to www.where-andwhen.com and follow the article link

The devastating search for missing family members among the debris was a painstaking process. Some were never recovered.

The E.O. Austin Museum, named for the town's founder, will be open during the centennial event to help interpret the history of Austin.

47 - W&W Fall 2011

American children spend less time playing outdoors than any generation before them. Re-cent studies show that a child is six times more likely to play a video game than ride a bike. This is not only detrimental to children’s physical well-being, but it deprives them of important social, intellectual, and emotional lessons. Even video games that encourage physical activity deny kids the benefi ts of getting outdoors and discovering that their imaginations are even more interesting than any possible scenario in a video game.

Autumn is the perfect time to enjoy nature. While many adults become fi xated on Mother Nature’s transforming beauty, kids just want to have fun. And, why not indulge them before winter creeps in and daylight is limited? So if you plan a fall road trip to the Pocono Moun-tains to view the fall foliage, make sure to in-clude exploration, discovery and play in your itinerary. Here are a few suggestions that may just make the Xbox seem a little less intrigu-ing.

"Every child should have mud pies, grass-hoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water lilies, wood-chucks, bats, bees, but-ter ies, various ani-mals to pet, hay elds, pinecones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huck-leberries and hornets; and any child who is deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education."

~Luther Burbank, American botanist, hor-ticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science

Fall Farm ToursSept. 10 and 17, 2011

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is on the National Register of His-toric Places with a number of historic buildings that provide visitors with an understanding of life on a small, Pennsylvania farm in the 1800s. Some of our buildings date to the last quarter of the 1700s.

The entire family will enjoy the tour as you experience life on a humble Pennsylvania German farm. You’ll see a number of rare breeds of species of livestock and fowl. The breeds raised at Quiet Valley are the same that one would have found on a small PA farm in the 1800s.

Horseback Riding

Located in a secluded mountain-top setting, the Triple W Riding Sta-ble is blessed with spectacular scen-ery and a professional and friendly staff.

The staff’s unique approach to Western riding begins with a person-alized interview regarding any past riding experiences. This helps them to assign a horse specifi c to your rid-ing ability. The stable is home to a herd of over 40 well-trained horses. All guests will receive a free lesson and explanation of the stable’s rid-ing style. Children need to be 9

Horseback Riding

Pocono Manor Stables is an ex-cellent horseback riding facility for riders of all ages and experience lev-els. You can count on having a well-trained horse and friendly, knowl-edgeable staff to answer all your questions. They have exclusive and picturesque trails, including the fa-mous waterfall trail, the only trail of its kind in the Poconos. The trails are surrounded by trees, ferns and native plants.

Like many of the stables in the Pocono Mountains, Pocono Manor

Stables takes exceptional care of their horses. In fact, one of them may be getting the “star” treatment very soon. Stella, the 9-year-old Quarter Horse who lives at the sta-bles, has had a very busy year. She has been competing for the title of America’s Favorite Trail Horse, with the help of her rider, Tyler Flake. The TV show of the same name will air Sept. 13, 2011, and will be the fi rst of the 13-week series on HRTV. The competition is like “American Idol” for horses. You can follow Stella’s progress on her Facebook page at www.facebook.com/home.php#!/stella.afth

Zip Lining

If your kids like a little bit of an adrenaline rush with their outdoor experience, zip lining at Camelback

Mountain Adventures will provide them with a rush they won’t soon forget! Imagine fl ying above the trees at 85 feet. You will soar more than 1,000 feet in just 30 seconds on one of the twin zip lines at Cam-elback.

TreeTop Adventure Course

Another incredible thrill at the park is the TreeTop Adventure Courses. Participants make their way through an obstacle course on zip lines, suspended bridges, scram-ble nets and swinging logs. The games are suspended between trees, but don’t worry because you stay securely clipped into a red safety ca-ble throughout the course. TreeTop Adventure Courses are designed for age 9 and older

CMA has courses for just about every age level. The Explorer Course

is for kids ages 6 to 10 who have reached a minimum height re-quirement. This course provides younger thrill-seekers with challenges as they ride a swing across treetops, zip line and walk across mov-ing bridges. Adult su-pervision is required.

Reservations are strongly suggested for these courses.

Western Pennsylvania’s Butler Coun-ty has something for everyone who vis-its. Though the quaint towns that make up the county have a distinctly small town feel, the county is just 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. In this installment of Spend The Weekend, I’ll focus on two of my favorite Butler County offerings, rich history and the outdoors.

As a his-tory buff, I am drawn to any place that has seen the likes of George W a s h -i n g t o n . T h o u g h he didn’t spend a lot of time in Butler County, his passage through the county occurred during a very tumultuous and infl uen-tial time in young Washington’s life, the start of the French and Indian War.

Towns like Harmony and Saxonburg gained their identities from their earliest residents. German Lutheran Separatists seeking religious freedom founded Har-mony in 1804. Saxonburg still retains the architectural features of a German village.

Outdoor enthusiasts also love Butler County for the many opportunities it presents for visitors to get out and enjoy nature during any time of year. Moraine State Park and its 3,225-acre Lake Arthur make the area a popular destination for active families.

FRIDAY

Apple Butter Inn666 Centreville Pike, Slippery Rock, PA 16057. 724-794-1844 www.applebutterinnpa.com

There are many exceptional lodg-ing choices in Butler County, and the Apple Butter Inn is one of the best. Mi-

chael Christley built the original six-room farmhouse in 1844. The structure was built with bricks that were formed and fi red on the property. The inn maintains many of the original details, such as the poplar and chestnut fl oors.

In addition to love-ly rooms and scrump-tious food, the inn is located close to the-ater, golf, restaurants

and outdoor activities.

Red Rock Falls Restaurant664 Route 173, Slippery Rock, PA 16057 724-406-0806 www.redrockfallsrestaurant.com

You won’t have to go far for dinner, since the Red Falls is located next to the Apple Butter Inn. This former one-room schoolhouse serves a diverse selection of delicious entrees, appetizers, salads and desserts. You can’t go wrong with

the fi let mignon, although Paula at the Butler County Tourism & Conference Bureau says the parmesan-crusted grou-per is her favorite. Red Rock Falls is open six days a week, closed on Mondays.

The Harmony Museum’s eight buildings hold 250 years of Harmony history, from its beginning as the new home for German Separatists seek-ing religious freedom to the many German traditions that immigrated with them. Some of the presenta-tions highlight George Washington’s 1753 mission and a rare collection of outstanding sporting rifl es by 19th-century Harmony gunsmith Charles Flowers.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Historic Harmony hosts several events throughout the year, includ-ing the WeihnachtsMarkt German Christmas Market, which is held on the second weekend of each Novem-ber. Guests are treated to German mu-sic and dancing as well as traditional German food. Skilled craftsman will demonstrate their old-fashioned trades. The event also features high-quality antiques, dozens of artisans dis-playing their fi ne crafts and children’s activities.
