CSA Farms & Community Gardens
KEY:
CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) is an innovative way to connect farmers and consumers in a mutuallybeneficial relationship sharing the risks and rewards of the growing season. The consumer buys a share of thefarm's harvest in advance, guaranteeing a market for the farmer's produce.
For most CSAs, a share consists of an assortment of seasonal, farm-fresh vegetables, herbs, and sometimesflowers, each week during the harvest season, typically June into October. Although CSAs typically sign-upmembers in late winter and spring, some may still have shares available later in the season.
CSAs have grown rapidly in number since the concept was first introduced in the United States at a Massachusettsfarm in 1986. These innovative farms help to meet the growing consumer demand for fresh, organically grownproduce and for a closer relationship with those who grow their food. They meet the farmers' needs for reliablemarkets for their produce.
CG (Community Gardens) give individuals the opportunity to grown their own produce in neighborhood, community sites that utilize vacant, urban plots. This program provides multiple advantages to each communitywhere the gardens are located and to those who participate in gardening and caring for the garden site. Urbanareas are enhanced and beautified when vacant plots are cleaned-up and utilized for Community Gardens.Advantages for participating gardeners include: healthy exercise; stress relief; enhanced emotional well-being;and the opportunity to learn new skills, which can lead to potential employment. Community Gardens can providean opportunity for families to work together and learn sustainable living while enjoying their own, home grownbounty.

Organic and Integrated Pest Management Farms
KEY:
ORGANIC GROWING METHODS C Certified Organic N Certified Naturally Grown
NC Non-Certified Organic P Signed the Farmer’s Pledge
Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on crop rotation, green manure, compost, biological pest control, andmechanical cultivation to maintain soil productivity and control pests. It excludes, or strictly limits, the use of syntheticfertilizers and synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators, livestock feed additives, and genetically modified organisms.Farms listed without a symbol may at times have some, but not all, products grown using one of thesemethods.
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IPM Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is considered by many to be an effective and environmentally sensitive approach topest management. IPM relies on a combination of comMonday-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensiveinformation on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination withavailable pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possiblehazard to people, property, and the environment.
The IPM approach can be applied to both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, such as the home, garden, andworkplace. IPM takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious useof pesticides. In contrast, organic food production applies many of the same concepts as IPM but limits the use of pesticidesto those that are produced from natural sources, as opposed to synthetic chemicals.
