Our Great Heritage – The Lord’s Supper

August 20, 2017

WELCOME TO ST. JOHN’S

We’re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Maglietto. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can.

OUR FACILITIES

Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother’s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John’s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be “taught” to young children.) If your young one needs some “time out,” we have an audio and video-equipped Mother’s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY What makes us Lutheran? As the 500th anniversary of the event that signaled the beginning of the Reformation on October 31, 1517 nears, we do well to consider OUR GREAT HERITAGE. Lutherans have a high respect for God’s Word as the ultimate and flawless authority for our lives. All the Bible’s teachings (doctrines) serve to point us to our need for a Savior and direct our eyes to Jesus who was that Savior. This morning we consider The Lord’s Supper.

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP

O Lord - our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter - we are assembled in your presence to hear your Holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Please Note Today’s service is video-recorded and

will be aired on our local cable channel at 12 pm today.

INVOCATION

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.

Lord Jesus Christ, in the sacrament of Holy Communion you give us your true body and blood as a remembrance of your suffering and death on a cross. Grant us so firmly to believe your words and promise that we may always partake of this sacrament to our eternal good; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 55:1-17 1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. 3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. 4 See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the peoples. 5 Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations that do not know you will hasten to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor.” 6 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. (NIV84)

PSALM 116

I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;* he heard my cry for mercy.

5

Because he turned his ear to me,* I will call on him as long as I live.

The LORD is gracious and righteous;*

when I was in great need, he saved me. Refrain

For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,* my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.

How can I repay the LORD* for all his goodness to me?

I will lift up the cup of salvation*

and call on the name of the LORD.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 10:14-22

14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. 18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he? (NIV84)

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: Gracious God and Father, we praise you for the countless blessings, which we receive from your hand: the beauties of creation and the bounties of the earth, the joy of life and the pleasure of friendship, the good of work and the gift of rest, the privilege to share happiness and sorrow with one another. Above all we praise and thank you for your saving Word and for your Son’s body and blood, which you give us to eat and to drink in the sacrament. Through these means of grace, you send the Holy Spirit into our hearts and unite us to Jesus and to the whole Christian Church on earth.

C: Strengthen us through this heavenly food; increase our trust in Christ and our love for one another.

M: Great God and Lord, without your continuing help we easily waver in our faith, lose courage, and grow careless in our watchfulness. The times and days are perilous. Give us strength to face the evils of each day with fresh confidence. Open our lips to speak of your grace, and move us to use the gifts that you give us to share your Word of salvation with all people. Protect and prosper the family, the school, the government, and all good institutions that you have established for the benefit of society. Remember in mercy those who are sick and suffering, and bring your healing to troubled homes and lives.

C: Move us to pray for those in need and to help them with deeds of kindness.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

M: Now, eternal God and Father, keep us in the saving faith and so enable us to overcome all things through our Lord Jesus Christ.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Christian Questions for Preparing to Receive the Lord’s Supper

1. Do you believe that you are a sinner?

Yes, I believe that I am a sinner. 2. How do you know this?

I know this from the Ten Commandments, which I have not kept. 3. Are you sorry for your sins?

Yes, I am sorry that I have sinned against God. 4. What have you deserved from God because of your sins?

I deserve his wrath and displeasure, temporal death, and eternal damnation. 5. Are you convinced that you are saved?

Yes, such is my confidence. 6. In whom, then, do you trust?

I trust in my dear Lord Jesus Christ. 7. Who is Jesus Christ?

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, true God and true man. 8. What has Christ done for you that you trust in him?

He died for me and shed his blood for me on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

9. How do you know this?

I know this from the holy gospel and from the words of the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

10. Which are those words?

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

11. Do you believe, then, that the true body and blood of Christ are in the Sacrament?

Yes, I believe it.

11

12. What moves you to believe this?

I am moved to believe this by the words of Christ, “Take and eat’ this is my body…drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant.”

13. What does Christ want you to do when you eat his body and drink his blood in the Lord’s Supper?

Christ wants me to remember and proclaim his death and the pouring out of his blood as he taught me: “Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

14. Why does Christ want you to remember and proclaim his death?

He wants me to do this so that I learn to believe that no creature could make satisfaction for my sins, but only Christ, who is trued God and man, could and did do that; I learn to look with terror upon my sins and regard them as great indeed; I find joy and comfort in Christ alone and believe I have salvation through faith in him.

15. What moved him to die and make a complete payment for your sins?

He was moved to do this by his great love for his Father and for me and other sinners, as the Scriptures teach.

16. Finally, why do you desire to receive Holy Communion?

I desire to do this so that I learn to believe that Christ out of great love died for my sins and that I also learn of him to loved God and my neighbor.

17. What admonishes and moves you to receive Holy Communion frequently?

The command and promise of Christ my Lord admonishes and moves me. Also, the burden of sins that lies heavy upon me causes me to feel a hunger and thirst for Holy Communion.

18. But what can a person do if he or she is not aware of the burden of sin and does not feel hunger and thirst for Holy Communion?

To such a person no better advice can be given that that, in the first place, the person put his hand into his own bosom and feel whether he still has flesh and blood, and that he by all means believes what the Scriptures say about this. Secondly, that he look around to see whether he is still in the world and keep in mind that there will be no lack of sin and trouble, as the Scriptures say. Thirdly, that person will certainly have the devil also about him. With his lying and murdering, day and night, the devil will let him have no peace.

12

19. What can you do if you are sick and are unable to come to Holy Communion?

Then I can send for my pastor to pray with me and to give me Holy Communion privately.

20. When is the proper time to do this?

The time to do this is not only when death is at hand, but earlier before all physical and mental power is gone.

21. Why would you want to do this?

I would want to do this to receive the assurance through Holy Communion that my sins are forgiven and that salvation is mine.

13

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

14

DISTRIBUTION Our Congregation practices the biblical practice of Close Communion. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord’s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John’s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. If you have any questions, please speak with Pastor Maglietto and he will be happy answer them.

PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION

Lord, I am not worthy to be a guest at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast me out. This bread is your body, which bore my sins upon the tree.

This wine is your blood, which purifies me from all guilt. At your invitation, I come rejoicing. Receive me, my Savior.

15
