When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Carl Gustaf Boberg (1859-1940) Volume 1 Issue 2 September 12, 2008 In order to have a pleasant outdoor experience, there is some gear that you should carry with you. Over the next few issues, I will be assembling a hiking/exploration kit. Also in this issue are thoughts from a trip to Center Branch WMA. Canteen: It is vital to carry water when you are outside. How much water you carry depends on how active you are, and how far you are going. If you run out, and can find water, be sure to purify it. You can boil it, or use two Potable Aqua tablets per quart. (Follow precautions for Potable Aqua tablets). Top is G.I. 2 quart bladder canteen purchased from surplus dealer. Bottom is 1 quart G.I. style canteen from Walmart with cup and case from surplus dealer. Note: The caps dont interchange! Park on Rt. 25 headed towards Mt. Clare/Lost Creek. It has an area of 974 acres. Deer, turkey, snakes, and squirrels are some of the animals that call it home. (I havent seen snakes, but hear it is home to Copperheads. I stay on the gravel in the warm months and walk heavily I also carry a decent sized stick, but thats another story.) The West Fork River is located partially beside Rt. 25 and has decent fishing opportunities. Center Branch is also accessible from Rt. 20 between Nutter Fort and Quiet Dell. (Thats another article) The deeper you go in the forest, the more things there are to eat your horse. -- 13 th Warrior We continue on, though. Lets pray that the tracks dont become mingled with another, and we lose our way or walk off a cliff. We have to avoid keeping our eyes on the ground and not watching for what is around us. If we dont watch, the enemy will sneak up, distract us, and steal away those who are coming up behind us. Have you thought of that? If were still around, one day we will be the elders of the church So, make sure youre on the right trail. Walk beside or close to the trail you follow dont erase the trail by walking in it if you walk in it, it becomes your trail and others then follow you. As I walked, I looked for tracks. I saw a couple human tracks, a few canine tracks, and many deer tracks. The ground was hard and dried out, so the tracks where a few days old. In Sunday School and Church the following Sunday, I had a thought. It reminds me of the world today. We can faintly see the tracks of those who have gone on before us. Time and weather dissolve the tracks until theyre barely visible. I visited the Center Branch Wildlife Management Area last Friday, September 5. I took a video camera and recorded as I walked. The video isnt available yet due to size issues... In one section, you can see where the deer standing behind the bush startled me when it snorted and went crashing through the brush. Slide 3
